^ I wouldn't know where to start Nige. I wouldnt mind having a bash at it. I dont think I have the eye for it though. I was crap at art at school. I didnt even know about the darks and lights you mentioned. I might read a book and have a go
I do believe art. like music though, that you are born with that talent to a great extent. I see it does run in your family mate.

Anyway, I will look into it and give it a go so you can take the piss or critique or whatever you wanna call it

Righto will dig out a couple of my old pics, since I am at home today.

But they are not as good as yours, and I borrowed to heavily from previous painters.

but I'll stick them up anyway.

This is how I imagine Nigel's front room may look
that yellow chair with the footstool will be his seat..

just messing about with a new prog -
photoBlend 3D by Mediachance , it claims to blend all the layers more naturally ,
and even has built in guides , so not too hard to learn .

This is something I painted circa 1990. It's heavily based on a famous Aboriginal Artist, though he painted with watercolours and this is Oil on canvas board (I was too poor to afford stretched frames). Anyone recognize the artist ?

Well done indeed ! S.will thats the idea get em up and share ,, lets all learn from each other , it dont matter about copying others pictures we all do that to learn from others , then you can move on taking the knowledge with you.

Looking at that you can see you understand the basics anyway ,, many would have ended up with the tree branches in the middleground the same strenght of colour as the foreground , even though they was copying form a pic in front of them, it would be a very easy mistake to make.

Very nice well done again and I would very happily hang it on my wall,, thanks for submitting .

For those of you interested in learning, advancing skills, or just brushing up there is a great free website that covers ALL types of art. The content categories are way toooooo lengthy to mention here, if your interested in any type of visual art they cover it.

Lots and lots of educational stuff including composition, colors etc etc. VERY informative and casual.

    Wetcanvas.com check it out

The section on watercolors is chock full of stuff, one of the biggest sections of the site.

You're too kind, I like it, but I don't like the yellow in the foreground (it's a solid block of colour) and the middle ground trees I got the perspective changing but not the light.

Anyway, they're some of my better ones, found some pics of some others that are more original but not so good. (Just gotta scan them in first).

All of this was done when I was 15-17 years old, I haven't touched a paint brush since high school. (Though this thread is making me feel like trying again).

    Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Your picture's great, I spent some time in the Netherlands and the is exactly how it looks. I like the simplicity of the picture, yet the detail and highlights of the sun on the windmill give it that magical colour you get when a sunset glow or as this case is the sun peaking through some heavy clouds.

No, I'm out of town and don't have time at the moment. I did, however, buy some art supplies last week. I may submit something else before the wind-up, err wind-mill. Truthfully, the subject leaves me a little uninspired but I will try to muster up some enthusiasm. I think if an artist is to succeed he must have some connection to the subject matter or it just becomes an exercise in technique. What is your connection to this particular subject if I may ask?
Your composition is good on this one; the perspective leads the eye into the subject and it is counterbalanced nicely by the water in the right foreground. You have made and effort to repeat the angles of windmill blades in the roof lines - repitition of shape is good. Nice effort.
