To be honest it seems like you are the one with your nose out of joint.

It's a merry little thread by some guy posting his pleasant artwork of bucolic scenes and you are taking a shit in it. Not cool.

Dont get me wrong I love to learn from people like yourself who have had the tuition so fire away with the advice. I am all ears .

Someone in your position should also know what I am painting here is done in lots of stages , so how do you know after I have finished with various glazes it will not all unite together >

BTW those of you who have had a shot at my immediate prob , your kinda in the right area.

How paintings work ( very basically ) you need cool colours in the background and warm in the foreground to give depth ( Humbert has spotted correctly the warm colour in the middle ) which I hadn't finished with ,, but also you need to express light with / against dark and the far side of the footbridge is lost ,, will be corrected with some dark behind it to make it stand out better .

Also all the other things you have observed are probably correct to ,, I aint having a good day today ,, broke a spring on me lorry to ,, the boss is not amused

I tried to make quite certain that you sincerely wanted criticism of your work before making my comment about your composition. I really took you at your word that you had big shoulders. But since you fired back with a personal attack I now know that you are quite prickly about negative criticism. Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

I would love to. I asked my daughter in the US to try and find some of my stuff. My ex-wife ended up with all of it in my nasty divorce. If I can turn up some of my oils or pastels I will post them. I painted as a hobby off and on for 40 years starting at age 12. I don't do it anymore and haven't picked up a brush since 1999. After getting a BA in Art I got a degree in environmental design and made my career in design. I spent a lot of time critiqueing the work of others and in my business getting constantly challenged and criticized it a way of life. So, sorry if I came on too strong with you. Keep painting and you will improve your technique. Drawing is the foundation. Try and take some courses in drawing, it will help a lot.

I'm with Humbert on this one. I'm a good photographer and am interested in many of the pictures posted because of the subject matter. If someone wants to be taken seriously I will ruthlessly criticise them in the hope that they improve. It's a bit like Andy Murray a few years ago, he didn't need telling that he was a good chap and he had hard luck, he needed telling he was a spoilt brat and a choker.

Severe criticism from me in photography is actually a deep compliment, because if you are a hopeless case I would probably say nice pics and leave it at that.

^It's ironic that many people get into creative endeavors to reap praise but in the real world it's mainly criticism and very little praise. It's the only way people get better.

    Go easy on Nige guys

Some artists are quite sensitive, even big shouldered, hairy arsed truckers that use a water pik .

Sorry Humbleone your still missing the point matey ,, I never posted this thread up to reap praise from anyone,, let me explain this to you ,, all I was trying to do was to hopefully inspire others to try a bit of art after seeing what some duffer of a lorry driver could do ok ?

Yes indeed its very nice to recieve some praise its very encouraging and any professional help from someone like your self is also welcome ,, I just thought you came on a bit bolshi with your degree and then to drop in the yellow ochre remark I jumped on it with a banter reply ,,,, sorry its a UK / American humour block ,, we tend to rip the shit out each other with no hurt feelings ,, believe you me you aint hurt mine.

Anyway sorry to hear about your shitty divorce , mine was similar with most of my old paintings thrown either at me or in my general direction ( some would say they had improved )

However in the meantime instead of waffling on here I throw down a challenge to you in any medium you like lets have a go at using our imagination to paint this windmill scene , hopefully it will encourage some others to jump in and have a go to .

Just a general observation - not referring to you.

Maybe I'll go out and buy some supplies and take you up on your challenge. I haven't done a pastoral scene in 45 years. I used to paint in the style of Andrew Wyeth in HS and then went totally abstract impressionist. This pic lends itself to heavy paint application or possibly oil pastels.

Just an aside ,, when I was a lad I used to play with the guy who painted this , and many others , take a look at the link .

We lived a few doors apart in King Coel road Lexden Colchester Essex ,, we used to make models together ,, I would make an Airfix Spitfire and get bored with it and set fire to it in the back garden ,, meanwhile Richard who had and still has the absolute patience of a saint would still be studiously painting every poxy rivet on a warship he was making then he would paint all the detail on the sailors faces,, the signs were there at an early age Richard was gonna be very special .

Even today ( and my God he is a very very wealthy man ) if he ever bumps into me in the street he will stop and enquire how I am. You would go a long way to find a more polite , courteous man .

Here is one of his paintings , I will try and post a link for his site where you can go if your interested to see more of his work and read about him .

    here's the link

Whilst I am sure to the expert all of these painings could be improved, from my perspective they are all very nice and I would be happy if I could produce any of them. though I am just about upto ant's efforts.

Ive tended to make jewellery and art out of chemistry.... which does make many beautiful things they tend to be transient and short lived. My aviator is an LCD i decided to make prity

Well thanks for that Hazz ,, art comes in many forms and mediums mate that is why its an ever changing subject which helps keep the interest flowing.

I think in my opening post I indicated all would be welcome here ,, it will be great if just some one either has a crack for the first time or it re kindles something in some one like Humbert ( hopefully )

Its a wonderfull hobby to have , its served me well for years and I for one know as long as I have a hole in my arse I will never be anything more than a hobby artist , I just dont have the ability , but even so at the level I can attain it gives me great pleasure.

Being a long distance lorry driver most of me life has been a bonus with me eyes sapping up wonderfull images as I get paid to go to so many places many people can only afford to go to on there annual hols

That may be the case but don't sell yourself short, you've put some really nice stuff up in this thread as attested to by Loy Toy wanting to hang some of it on his walls.

I really wish I could draw or paint but I can't. Anything I produce makes Ant look like frikking Picasso!
