Next layer, building up the clouds a little and that smoggy asian sky one sees in Java, and now the deep blue colour of a distant mountain, I'm hoping to layer some brighter greens over the top to bring the shape out a little.
I'm aiming to produce a picture of a typical scene one might see in central Java.

I'm not 100 percent sure if I will include that banana plant on the left or not.
On one hand I like the asymmetry and being foreground I can really work on the details of it (which look crap in that photo), but it might make it too busy, and I might be better working on those houses and the rice plants in the foreground instead.
I was also particularly interested in how you draw his face reversed, almost as if you were drawing a mirror image. Check the direction of the beard, for instance.Quote:

Aah, that's because my camera is a mirrorless camera, and that's erm his inhaler in his hand. He was awfully drunk there and drinking some 25 percent Chinese herbal stuff. Seemed a good sport though.

Thats very clever mate ^ something I have never really thought about doing ,, your kinda creating your own little bit of idyllic countryside , good on ya .
Its allways good to have some water in the pic to get reflections going .
Coming on , just a small tip , if you dont mind try to define yourself a direction for the source of the light so you will be able to cast a shadow side to help it form shape.
Anyway , its your painting mate , just an idea for you , and you might well not agree with it , thats the beauty of painting its YOURS to do with what you like :)
One question and suggestion.
What is your focal point or main point of interest?
If its the mountain it needs to be off-center.
A good comp never has the POI in the center of the piece either vertically or horizontally. Makes the eye roam over the entire scene. Rule of thirds. or as I like to call it Tic-Tac-Toe layout.
Also in that light if the horizon splits the page horizontally exactly in the center your apt to end up with two pics.... from the viewer's point of view.
Artistic license is a GOOD thing! If I wanted an exact replica of a scene its much easier to take the photo lolol

Sort of seconded EG ,, I was gonna mention it BUT ,,,,, dont forget KW is gonna compose from other pics ,, and the big advantage as we know with oils is we can re do our work unlike other mediums ,, I think when he sets his building up on the LH side the mountain will pale into the background

The mountain/volcano's just going to be background, I'm hoping to have the ramshackle building draw your eye to the left after looking at some rice grains at the front.
Respect to king willy for starting on a hard project like that after a 20 year gap
The layout reminds me a little of a hokusai woodblock

Version 2 of this design. I bordered the central panel with Japanese characters for 'Peace', 'Serenity', 'Harmony' and 'Beauty'. And added a Japanese style geometric border to finish around the outside. Custom made frame finished in matte black. Just completed this piece. Over 550 pieces of glass, many 1/2 the size of your smallest fingernail. 150+ hours to complete. Glad I got aircon in my art room!. All American art glass with a little very rare Canadian made art glass.

That's fantastic stuff, my xwife used to dabble in that glass stuff too, a lot harder and more time consuming that it looks!

I'm a bit disappointed, I wanted to paint some more tonight, but I didnt get home till late, and had to complete some work after dinner, really didnt finish everything I had to till about 9 or 10. So a bit late to start now. (back in the day I never let that stop me, I used to paint till 2 or 3 or 4.00 am if the mood took me, and it usually did.) But I am also remembering what you were saying about using natural light to paint.Quote:

Here we are after a fair bit of wrestling with it , I am gradually knocking it into shape bit by bit ,, I have lots more shadow glazing to go in the foreground also more detail on the jetty including uprights on the other side + some rope .

Yes KW you are correct to wait for the natural light mate ,, we are lucky here now we have light until 8pm ,,,,,,, I also have a veg garden that needs tending to !

I'm starting to understand what Blue mentioned now, that ladder is the first thing I see there, followed by the boat. It's a pretty cool way to get out of painting the houses. :)
That pic just sums up how much work you do put into these paintings, with all the detail, love the reflection of the water.

The birds in the background , store window ? are also very well done .

Well about the palette mate ,, I just put it up to show people to help them understand where the colours appear from ,,,,if you look at the top of the paper you will see the 7 colours I am working from .
Left to right .
Titainium white - french ultramarine - cadmium red - burnt umber- sap green- raw sienna - yellow ochre
I also use cold press linseed oil / stand oil mixture to thin and glaze my paint with ,, it also makes the conseratory smell nice :)

building up the colours in the volcano, trying to show light coming from one direction, I think it's too late to adjust it as per blue's suggestion. I'm also hoping that the rice in the front, with the ramshackle hut will add the angles. Also, while I'm at it, some reflection in what will end up being padi.
