doesn't want to work for me... oh, well not a big deal
What you trying to do Elgib ?
Here is a little painting I am currently working on, one of the many nearby coastal / boat scenes we have in the area .
I have a lot more work to do yet as you can well see ,, just thought you might like to see it developing . Its painted in oil on a small 8 * 8 " box canvas .
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs
Do you do them from memory, use a photo or what? How does it work?Originally Posted by nigelandjan

Is this what your trying to do EG ?
If so well done mate
What I normally do is to begin it with a quick splash and dash on site this time of the year cause its so poxy cold , then mabe a sketch to detimine the basics then a photo to work from later.Originally Posted by quimbian corholla
In the summer ( chuckles ) I set up in everyones way and paint in situ ,, this is also a good way to meet others interested in painting , I have some friends here sometimes we go as a group and paint all day in situ ,, its a great day out together and usualy descends into laughter as we look at each others offerings
BTW EG if you get a Photobucket account upload your pics on there and siply copy and paste them from there into the little yellow box on here BUT before you do knock out the letters in the box with your backspace bar before pasting it in ok ? Hope that helps
For me, I use a photo, but also a couple of different paintings of similar elements, so I can copy the technique needed.
Unlike nigelandjan I don't paint outside, cos I'm pretty rubbish at it, and also because using oils means waiting days for a layer to dry and can therefore take weeks - months to paint one.
You can do an oil outside KW or perhaps try a watercolour or even a line and wash ,, you would be suprised how much you will enjoy it .
Dont worry about the quality of your work mate , infact it will concentrate your mind more on the job in hand ,, and people love to see someone sitting outside painting , you would be surprised , most will pass by taking a quick glance but some will stop and comment and chat with you.
I was painting up on a quayside in Norfolk once on a cold day , and a couple came along with chairs sat down beside me watching then shared they're tomato soup and bread with me
You sure that bread weren't for the Ducks ?Originally Posted by nigelandjan

Another water color 140lb Fabriano with MaimeriBlu paints
Depending on where your located the supplies can be quite limited. In Thailand there are some water color papers (mostly Arches) at the B2(?) shops in Central shopping malls. As for paints they are difficult to find. I did find the Windsor & Newton student grade in small tubes in the above store. they also carry a reasonable amount of low cost brushes you can start with. There are local shops, but they are hard to find and usually don't carry a full line of supplies.
If you find a really good one in Thailand let me know
If it is likely to be something you continue I recommend that you buy only artist quality supplies. For example the Canson papers are crap, any type of rework or overwork (which is likely when starting) will cause the paper to pill up and drive you nuts. The sizing in the paper isn't the same as artist quality and makes a huge difference.
Student quality paints (Not the grade school stuff sold in ready palettes) are reasonable to start with if the expense of artist quality is to dear. For example Windsor & Newton student quality are called Cottman. Lots of folks use them and are just fine with them. The biggest difference is the pigment loads so with student stuff you might have to layer to get the intensity needed. they are also hues instead of raw pigments in some cases, a way they can keep the costs down.
Personally I get all my water color supplies from Ken Bromley in the UK... the freight is dear but the quality of stuff they sell is first class and they are reasonable. Don't try and order from the US... they rape you with transport costs etc.
Lots of on line retailers including in Aus.
for a ton of info on watercolor techniques and STUFF check out WetCanvas.com there you will find all you need to know about the medium. Free to sign up and the folks there are very giving with information and help. May be one of the largest on-line resources on art there is.
Schroll down the menu on the left side until you get to watercolor.
Good luck and if I can be of help let me know.

Don't ask the question!"
EG ,s getting the idea and a well deserved green in the bin for it to.
Thats very nice indeed , nice and clean looking.
KW do you note how the paper is stuck down all round to keep it from cockling under the wet ?
Well I tell you what to help get you started with EG,s approval what I would like to do is for you and me to do our own impression / version of EG,s cliff painting above .Originally Posted by kingwilly

c,mon u and me give it a go , lets see what we turn up with , I wont be able to paint till the weekend because of the light when I get home from work , but I'll nail it up then
Why not?
Good lad ,, lets see your efforts ,, as EG said you only need some students paints to start with and some cheap paper ,, allthough you WILL need proper watercolour paper , dont use any other paper or you will be gutted from the start.
I dont know about where you live , but in Thailand I have found even in the small town stationers buried deep inside all you need to paint ,, infact I love to paint with uncomfortable / cheap brushes I buy in Thailand ,, 15bht specials ! wonderful
Its best to stick your paper to a piece of board about the same size , then you can tip the water + paint about on the board ,, just let it run wild !
Keep it loose keep it quick dont faff around with it ,, just leave it ,,, believe you me you will kill it otherwise ,, its a bit addictive the old water colours when you get into them,, bit like golf ,, you will never beat it !
Good luck mate !
We'll see, I'll give it a bash if I can find the time. (Got a few things on at the moment and fly to KL on Sunday.)
Ok mate good luck with it all ,, it wont take you long ,,
PS ,,,,, I gotta work about 50 hours between now and Sunday
It will be interesting to see both versions of the lighthouse. The painting itself is MY interpretation from another photo I saw somewhere. LOL
Artistic license and all that.
EG
Thats what its all about mate ,, there is nothing more I enjoy than when a group of us go out together to paint the same scene ,, it never fails to amaze me how we see and interpret the same scene so differently .
Please keep posting more of your work up to EG ,, allways great to learn from each other
^ or to put it another way, say painters are good and others are absolute shit.
Here you are EG my quick take on your pic
The first a watercolour
Secondly a pastel ,, done the best I could with the very few pastels I have , also its continually raining here so I can really get outside to get down and dirty with it like I need to , but never mind , hopefully KW will stick his up soon so we can have a look at each others take on the same subject.
Happy painting
