New Year BBQ pig and stuff

Well this new year my BiL bought a pig and we decided to do some "Moo Han" spit roast pig. The days festivities started at about 11 o'clock in the morning over my mates house, well actually they just sort of continued from the night before !!

    My dog went with me.

    continued......
I have more than the average number of arm and legs

    The Pig

Some time later my BiL and a goorp of the locals go off to get the pig, I really should of relised but I was just expecting them to bring back a pig all ready to BBQ. This being Thailand was a bit optamistic.

A very cute pig I thought

    Killing the pig

One of my staffs parents do a bit of pork and are well used to killing pig's, a very simular method to what my grandmother used to do. Apart from he's usung a metal pipe instead of a hammer.

    First line the pig up.

Then give it a good whack

Then a knife into the neck to bleed it, keep the blood for making "Lab Luad"

    Part 4 "the BBQ"

    The BBQ

At this point we relaised that we did'nt have anything to roast it on. No problem back over my mates for them to just knock one up

It took them only about half an hour to do, heres the finnished item

You then have to wire the pig to the frame, which actually took longer than making the frame.

The "insided's" go to make a tasty soup

    The result

Stick the pig over a fire, turn and baste frequently and here's the result

    Rather tasty

Then share with some friends and copious ammounts of alchol

I must admit I was getting a bit fuzzy by this time and due to the fact that I had decided to visit another friend on our push bike and fallen off it three times I was bleeding rather a lot as well, fortunatly due to the massive whiskey intake it did'nt hurt....my misses was not that happy with me though

I hope you don't mind if I post my christmas pig shots here.

Ours came ready dead and prepared, even had a big pole stuck through it to stop it falling into the barbq.

The equipment was provided by the people we bought the pig from.

The guests thoroughl enjoyed it as you can see.

Hooray for ChiangMai noon they sing..

I was amazed at the price.
Not sure what you pay down your way RC.
I was expecting a 45 kilo pig to cost over 4,000 baht, this one came in at only 1,400 baht.
That was exactly 800 baht cheaper than my 10 kilo turkey that we had on the same day.

About the same I think, my brother-in-law bought it about 1,200 I think 35 plus kg, we had to kill ours though, at least we knew it was fresh

    That's true.
I've had roast pig several times.

A couple of times it was steamed in advance of the roast.
That was a lot nicer than roasted from raw.
Meat just fell off the bone.
How would you steam something that big?

    Got to admit though.
20 odd quid for a whole pig is pretty impressive.
fed 16 of us and we still hadn't touched the legs.
My mates wife wanted the trotters and her father booked the head early.

No idea, but yea, it's nicer steamed first, a bit like BBQ ribb's are beter steamed or boiled first. I still don't know exactly how much we paid, but I have a feeling that it was a bit more than yours, mabye cos we still had all the blood and insides ?

^ quite right, real men goto Foodland to buy their meat, in nice plastic packages with no head or innards attached and no having to hose down your patio to get rid of all the gungy bits, and as for that bowl of pigs innards I think that would turn me into a vegetarian, absolutely disgusting
