It's this time of year again...

...when the food comes literally walking and flying into the kitchen.

Tonight's first course, to be BBQed:

Followed by a Maleng Mau paste with sticky rice waiting to be prepared:

"Flies" are not edible, I've been told, but these insects are still alive, not sure whether she's going to steam them before mashing them up or not, report to follow.

PS: I have a porkchop as a back-up in the fridge, just in case like...

I'm not a fan of insects as a rule, but those ones in the picture are the ones that come up from the ground a couple of times a year I think.
They are rather nice just fried.

That's the second scorpion in the house in as many days, prolly the same one coming back after I'd shown it the door.

Picture's a little blurred but they look like flying ants or termites. Last night my house was surrounded by flying termites, the wife said they were pretty tasty fried - this morning there were none left, just milions of cast-off wings.

Their wings fills just one purpose, to move them into a new location.
After dropping their wings they will walk away and make their new nests - they (yes there will be multiples of them) are somewhere in your garden.
Down 20-30 cm in the soil..

    Maleng Man, not Mau.
And yes, frying is the way to go, add a bit of salt:

and throw into the hot pan laced with a drop of oil:

The result may be eaten as is, or processed further to Nam Prik.

I'd be interested to know what the scorpion was like.
I have been told they taste like prawns but have never plucked up the courage to try.

Yeah, think of it as a land-based crab, the meat has similar texture but has a distinct 'earthy' flavour.

There is "goo" as well. Putting aside the "exotic" appeal, it really isn't anything much to write home about.
Pure convenience is the reason I bother, I wouldn't go out of my way for a scorpion, nor any insects, come to think of it.

I've tried most insects and have no squeamish worry about trying them - I just don't find them very nice; I'd rather eat a bag of peanuts.

My theory, for what it's worth, is that country folks find them 'tasty' because they have been brought up with 'insect' being a major source of protein in their diet - What I mean by this is that we would find any food that our body requires tasty.

Actually I much prefer some fried grasshopper to peanuts as a bar snack.
Red ant salad is nice too, but didn't really like those things (water Bugs?) that look like cockroaches. Probably because they look like roaches.

They're quite nice processed into "nam prik", sweetish.

According to some futurist types, insects are the food of the future.
    Just thought you should know.

stroller, I'm with you on the dog! When I was in China I ate a wonderful spicy Dog & tofu stew! But I tried insects @ a Northern Thai restaurant by me a few months ago & I found it to be rather disgusting!

    Good luck on this one!

Chip butties are ok, but i can live without them.

Squeamish? Yes, bugs dont appeal to me. Thats means there are more about for you to flambe and sprinkle on your picked dogs bollocks or whatever it is you're eating these days

Soapdodger? Whats that got to with anything?

It would not surprise me if your next thread was about eating your wife's shit or something like that.

You aint normal, thats for sure.
