One of the nice aspects of living in Chantaburi . . . excellent durian. Problem is the Thais cut it down when it is not ripe yet and the taste is almost non-existent.
I have to search and ask for Durian suuk, nim nim . . . Malaysian and Singapore style . . . soft, creamy and fragrant with a slightly sweet/bitter taste.

    Yummmmmmmmm!

    better living through chemistry

They have an arsenal of chemicals to make vegetables and other foods to stay fresh looking. Just try tasting the vegetables at the salad bars in ‘better’ restaurants. There is no taste, except a kind of dry cardboard taste—but if you spread salt, sugar and MSG—salad dressing—on them then they taste okay.

When I first moved here a farang said to me: ‘you know why the hungry street dogs won’t eat a lot of the meat here, don’t you?” and I said I didn’t know, though I had noticed they often walked away from the sausages, etc I threw them. “Embalming fluid”, he replied. “No way” I said, only to read in the Bangkok post a few days later of inspectors finding 17 of 30 food stalls they ‘raided’ loaded with formalin—embalming fluid. And my T.hai friend with a masters degree in public health who works at the (Thai) Food and Drug Adminstration confirms it: formalin in meats is a big problem here. She sent me some formalin test kits and said these kits were once even sold in 7-11’s. Hey, don’t want to spend the money on refrigeration? Just soak the stuff in embalming fluid! Now you know why the same unrefrigerated meats in food stalls can be placed out for sale night after night after night.

Try this experiment: buy an apple from just about anywhere in Thailand and slice it open, then set it on your kitchen counter. Does it turn brown in a few minutes the way they do ‘back home?’ Nope. After two weeks I saw one tiny brown spot start to form, and the ants were eating only that one tiny spot. Not sure what they (Chinese?) put in the apples to make them mummified.

And how do you think they kill all those bugs for sale in the food stalls? Hit ‘em over the head with little ‘stun hammers?” My best guess is they just spray them with pesticides, the way they spray everything here with pesticides. Like the girl says in the video of the bug food stall: “Arroy mak mak”.

Around Soi 2 on Jomtien Beach Road are a load of seafood stalls, here's a couple I saw today, don't fancy the BBQ fish but the prawns are good

    Bit of squid perhaps?

    Jomtien Noodle Soup stall

I am not sure how this place has got away with plonking itself in the one spot, it's on a nice farang housing estate in Jomtien, Royal Park Village I think it is called, they slowly seem to have built slum dwelling type roofs and other really crappy stuff like that at one of the entrances to this nice village, I mean the soup is ok and that, but would you spend millions of baht to live in a supposedly nice village and then have someone set up a noodle stand by your house.

The tables and stools aint too bad.

My 25 baht noodle soup with red pork, pretty good deal really.

    Pattaya Chicken Stall

For all you Americans out there this may come as a bit of a shock, chicken can actually taste nice, not all chicken is as bland as those fast food restaurants like KFC and Mc Donalds, all you need is some chicken, some road pollution, some old oil or fat to deep fry the dead chickens in, and then you have got yourself a meal that is full of flavour, enjoy

For four years I was doing Health &Safety inspections of those "Food Courts" that most department stores have - both in Bangkok and Taiwan .
Out front on the public side they are all( well most of them!) nice and clean.
Out back in the storage and prep areas Yeuk!! whatever you do DO NOT look up into the cooker hoods ! LOL
In 1999 alone had 17 cases of food poisoning ( resulting from Dept Store food courts that were the cause of insurance claims!)

    I much prefer street stalls!

As an aside -The squid in Taiwan look similar except are much bigger and not mangled so flat! They serve it in a plastic bag full of sweetened Soy sauce so you take a bite and dip it back in. Messy to eat but bloody wonderful !

The Thai squid are marinated in a strong solution of MSG before they are dried. In Taiwan the insides and ink sac are removed and then semi-dried - the "meat" is still a bit soft.

In Thailand or Malaysia my policy is BBQ or Roti that is cooked in full view -
    Nothing re-heated= no problems.

Happyman, you really believe that food stalls are cleaner than food courts? Hard to keep any hygienic standards on the street, isn't it?

    (I am frequenting both.)

Probably 50% - 50% - but having seen some of the most disgusting food prep areas you could imagine in "up market" food courts where everything from the public side looks fine, I prefer outside food stalls where you can make your own judgement!

I think it is a fruit.
You don't eat the pods only eat the white/pink balls inside which have the consistancy of polystyrene and the flavour of wallpaper paste.

I have forgotten the name for them now.
Is it Makhaam-Tet ? Definitely ends with a Tet

    Google came good - eventually

    " makhaamthet (มะขามเทศ)

Thai name for the camachile, a tree and its fruit known by the scientific name pithecolobium dulce. Its fruits are similar to those of the tamarind tree but has a softer skin and a different taste. Its tender curly skin is red-green and its whitish-pink flesh sits around shiny brown seeds."

Ive tried most things on offer here and are partial for the bbq crickets when drunk.

But i have the shits the minute i arrive till i get home and usually drop a stone in weight even with all the beer, thai's have stomachs of iron i even turn my nose up even when blotto at somethings that have been on offer, which has probably saved me from proper illness lol.

Saying that, being a bit of a fast food fan im pretty sure in the uk ive had cat/dog and rotten meat, a local Indian takeaway does not even name what meat it is on the menu, just says 'meat' so probably its cat or dog food, or some kids horse.

She sells 40 chickens perday from her road side stall so by Thai standards she is raking in the dosh.
So chose your chicken and watch as she chops it up into little bits, I might add she wont discount if you let her keep the head and feet, The only bit I don't like is sometimes the bones splinter so you have to be a bit careful of that, not sure what the green leaves are for, she obviously has'nt heard of paxo.

i have eaten chicken from her wery god and nice prices always a nice smile and it looks clean and tidy compared to many other soi stalls a big smily from me

Yes, not bad, i try my best to kill them off in the lemon and chille juice first mind you. In truth you only taste the sauce...
I prefer them small too, if they are too big you can feel their long feeler things in your mouth. i don't like that.
