Low end Thai restaurants; part two

Well today on my visit into the wilds of the Pattaya countryside I decided to stop off for a snack, now this place looks quite classy, nice proper wood tables etc, flowers and plants everywhere, yep nice place to take a small wife.

Anyway here is the entrance to the place.

Notice the well fed street dog there, the food must be good, obviously when one see's furniture like this one does wonder what sort of prices they may charge.

After taking my seat the young lady brought me over a glass of water and a toilet roll of all things, would I instantly get the shits from eating their food?

And here it is in all it's glory, Pad Kappow Moo, It was actually very good although a bit spicey, she left the chillies chopped up big so they were easy to find and move to one side, also she included some slices of fried onion and bell peppers in there aswell, the whole lot came to 25baht, although having a toilet roll on the table reminded me of my early days in Thailand and gave thoughts of wiping ones bum, which really isn't what you want to think about during your meal.

Today I went to the old yearly agricultural fair in Sri Racha, It's every year for 10 days, I'm not really sure if this counts as a low end restaurant or more of a mobile foodstall on a grand scale, as you can see in this picture it is an open air thingy with fine decor.




Even get a nice bucket of dead leaves to go with your meal.

Anyway I went for the old dead pig body parts boiled up in some water, the meat is very tender, but you do have to stress to them that you don't eat the slimey fat, well that is as long as you don't eat it, anyway here is his pigs stewing pot.





Hygene obviously is a main concern to us farangs, and I was quite suprised to see him don plastic gloves while he was using kitchen utensils to prise the meat off of the bone, I mean that is hygene, alas I was to be let down when he picked up the sprig of parsley with his bare hand and chucked it on top of my meal, still it's only to be expected in a third world country I suppose, anyway the meal was very good

I had some duck in red curry paste, crab omelette and mixed veg from a 'raan aharn' the other night. It was right tasty, but I didn't take any piccies. Soz

Well I have obviously had a good year so far this year as I haven't eaten in any low end Thai Restaurants, but alas all good things come to an end, yep, next week our work will be finished and this thread will flourish as it used to as I slowly run out of money yet again.

Today was just a practice run to get back into the swing of things, so off I went down Soi Theprasit to the old boiled pig place, offhand I can't even remember the Thai name for this dish but it is one of my favourites.

I asked for no fat and got no fat, also I didn't delve into the chilli and raw garlic bowl, just a bit too much for the first meal of the day, this stuff is pretty good and comes with an onion soup, I also had a coke and the whole lot came to 40baht.

I forgot to mention the egg, it's a bit of a funny colour so I didn't eat that.



Gave this one a miss.

As GoW said, it's Khao Kha Moo (rice with pig leg) and it is delicious. I had some last night; take out from the food center at the Save One flea market near our house. 20 baht per plate.

But, if you hadn't written "boiled pig place" I would have guess Khao Man Gai based on the sauce, broth and corriander....

I realised after I posted as I read thru the last page again, quite a coincidence that my last post 6 or 7 months ago was the same dish, I did actually goto the red pork and noodle soup place first but they had run out already

Slowly going to more low end places, peanuts that have been steamed and hard eggs that have been cooked a bit differant to what we are used to.

I love Khao Kha Moo - my apsolute favourite, but u need the fat - the eggs are good, but DD - you need 1 chilli - 1 garlic per mouthful for the best taste IMO !





but for some reason i have trouble picking up after a meal of that ....

Well I have been working in the wilds of Ban Chang, got to admit I imagined spending my afternoons in the short time bars there but unfortuneately I have been working so lunch time I nipped down the road for some pork fried with basil and chilli, got to admit I wasn't that impressed with it, still with a bottle of pepsi it came to 30baht so that aint too bad.

This bargain place may look like a bit of a shack but the food is ok, it is on Soi Thepprasit near the Jomtien end of the road, they have probably spent a lot of time and money to deck it out to look like a corrugated iron shack.

They only have 2 tables so it maybe a good idea to make a reservation.



They also sell loads of everyday type of stuff like petrol and that.



And finally my lunch, fried pig with basil and chilli, including a coke 35baht.

This place is pretty good and damn cheap, it is on Soi Theprasit in Pattaya at the Jomtien end next door to the Nakhon Sawan Car Care Center, so you dump your car off to be washed and get a bite to eat or a few beers to drink.

Nice pinewood furniture made up locally from wooden packaging bought from Laem Chabang docks.



I have to admit I was a bit disappointed about the small amount of meat in my noodle soup, but then I was shocked when he told me it was 20baht, been a few years since I paid that little amount for a kwatteoy soup in Pattaya or Jomtien, didn't eat the bits of liver though.

Yet again the old pork noodle soup, this place wasn't as good as the one above, bit more meat but bloody a whole 25 baht, this was more your watery bowl of water with chilli powder in it unfortuneatly, I mean I don't mind it like that but I do like the old broth from the boiled pork dish chucked in there, anyway this is on Soi Theprassit by the old Soi 17 which is now called Soi8 for some reason.

Again on Soi Theprasit but this time up by the Sukhumvit end of the road next door to the car wash there, this place is a bit more upmarket, yep my meal here cost 30baht, initially she said 40baht, but I think she forgot that I asked them to take out the chickens foot that they had put in there, honestly, I do not look like an Issan person so I have no idea why she would do that to me.

The broth or gravy was good although a bit sweet for me, the vinegar soon got rid of the sweetness though, there was also 2 great big chunks of liver in there, I am sure she saw that I came on the bike and hadn't brought my dog with me so I have no idea what she expected me to do with them, 5baht dearer than yesterdays noodle soup but well worth it.

Lived across the road in Moo Ban Parntip for about 2 years. We ate there on a regular basis. Also very handy when you're getting your car washed.

Yesterday I had to take my car to Banglamung to have a dent filled due to some idiot backing into it while it was parked outside my place, both the insurance assessor and the body shop demanded to see my driving license, why the fok they would want to see a driving license I have no idea, when I asked them they also had no idea, anyway, once they finally got it into their thick skulls that one does not need a driving license to own a parked car, and also that the car was not in my name they gave up on that idea, pretty dumb some of the natives, also got them to respray my bumper aswell as I blamed the damage on that was done by the idiot who backed into my car shall pick it up next week

Anyway Banglamung is about 8 kms from Jomtien, ie you go Jomtien, Pattaya, Naklua and then your there, poxy long way just to get a dent filled, so I decided whilst waiting to be picked up I would try some of the more local style noodle soup, as this is quite a way out of Pattaya it's only 20baht per bowl, but you got to remember the locals eat fat and gristle and don't mind the odd bone or insect in with their food, I was quite suprised as there was none of that sort of stuff, I think it is because it is opposite the CholChan hotel so they get lots of farangs who have turned their noses up in the past at stuff like that, all in all pretty damn good and a bargain price

A bbq catfish and chicken stall that was also outside, got to admit I was quite tempted by the chicken, the fish still had their heads and eyeballs though



The noodle soup shop also sold fish paste sandwiches, probably the most disgusting thing one could ever wish to eat, not only is the bread the worst in the world I doubt if the fish paste contains any edible parts of fish in it

Okay I am now bored with noodle poxy soup, this place is on Soi Theprasit and also sells noodle bloody soup but I went for something different.

The cooking area although she cooked my food outback for some reason, suppose she didn't want to chilli the place out so to speak.



My rice with fried pork chilli and basil leaf, pretty damn good for 30baht, she did ask if I wanted and egg with it though.

Thousands of noodle soup restaurants in Pattaya and Jomtien and I still haven't been to them all on Soi Theprasit, this one is quite nicely done out, some of them on this Soi I wouldn't even venture into, this is right at the end by Sukhumvit Road, there are about 6 of them together, and after about 2pm they all close for the day, yep they make enough money in the morning and lunch that they don't even bother opening for the evening, can't be bad when your selling stuff for less than a dollar a head



Quality proper wooden tables, also you get the choice of bottled water which you have to pay for, or water out of that jug which is for free, never tried free water in a Thai restaurant before, but I assume it won't kill you otherwise they would be lacking in customers.
