    Motorbikes in thailand

I was reading today,in the Phuket gazette, and it said that to ride a motorbike in Thailand, you have to have a Thai driving license.

Phuket: MOTORBIKES: Let's get honest with tourists

I always thought an International drivers license was enough....?

I would imagine that it has motorcycle as well as car listed on the license doesn't it.?

Most states have the listing for what ever you are required to have a different cert for.

perhaps the law should be changed to allow foreign motorbike riders to ride legally in Thailand on a foreign motorcycle license.
It doesn't mention international license in the article at all.

^ Have a look at your insurance policy and let me know if you (or the missus) finds a reference to driving licenses...

The Thai consulate web site says that an Thai driving license or International Driving license is required to DRIVE in Thailand, people will rent you a bike/car on a UK one, but it is illegal to drive without the required license!

    BIB will be happy

Well, the driving licence centre says you can use a UK licence for 12 months, and seeing as the police wont check your passport, probably much longer.

Although i have a full UK Licence not once did a motorcycle rental place ask for my Licence at all. Just a copy of my passport, Nor did the vehicle rental company i used on numerous occasions.

And ive always been under the impression that all you need is a UK driving licence anyway. I never bothered obtaining an internation driving licence.

Seems to me that the Gazette is full of Nonsense.

you will only need the thai driving licence to show that you're living in thailand. Then you will not get a foreigner charge when you're want to go to the zoo or water fall!!

An international drivers license is only valid if you have a valid license from your country to go with it. It also must have the motorcycle stamp and corresponding certification on your home country license if you are driving a scooter or motorcycle here.. Also, even though an international drivers license is valid for a year, in Thailand it is only valid for three months.
