    Phuket Snorkeling...Anyone Done It?

I had a package tour to visit two islands off of Phuket...Khao Nui and Khao Nok. I was given snorkeling equipment, and not trusting diving equipment nor having the courage to do it yet, I opted to snorkel...something which I haven't done in about 15 years.

I must say that the trip was well worth it. I took a few underwater photos with my Kodak waterproof camera. Got some nice fish and corals.

Wondered if anyone else has had simliar snorkeling experiences. Are the Similans worth a look for the strictly snorkeling visitor?

    Thanks!

The Similans has some excellent snorkling close to the islands.

This company does liveaboard snorkling only trips. Scuba diving Thailand - Similan islands liveaboard dive Trips around Phuket and Khao Lak.

Thanks for the link terry. Do you have any personal snorkeling stories? I'm wondering how I can post some of my pics on here...

Where are you staying in Phuket? Most of the beaches on the west coast have some reasonable snorkelling around the headlands at either end of the beach.

The Similans are beautiful and there is some great snorkelling out there, but unless you are prepared to spend some time on a liveaboard, or waste a large part of your day travelling to and from the islands, I'd stick to the west coast.

There are also some good day speed boat trips that will take you snorkelling at some of the islands out in Phang Nga bay. Haven't bothered with any of these trips so I can't give you any recommendations or much info about them, only hearsay.

(Edit: forgot to say that time of year is important, both for west coast snorkelling and access to the Similans.)
You're just jealous because the voices only talk to me.

Remote Islands off Phuket - Snorkeling and Beachcombing...

Thanks for the tip on how to get these files uploaded. I've been wanting to scan them for quite some time now. These are just a few...there are some more with colorful fish as well.

People on the beach wading in the water amongst the schools of fish.

Feeding bread to the schools of fish near the shore.

A coral shot (can see some small blue and yellow fish)...

    Zebra-like fish among coral...

    Coral with bright sunlight...

Hard floor and silicon-like water ceiling...

All of these photos I took with an underwater Kodak camera, which was purchased at the local film shop for about 450 baht.

A few years ago, my wife and I snorkeled off Phuket (We were staying at the Club Med). They motored us out to some small island a klick or two offshore.

Was a nice spot with a lot of fish, but at that time there was about a zillion jellyfish floating around that you had to get past before you could relax and enjoy the fishes.

    Regards,

zillions - you'll want to go to Trat. Don't know if Koh Chang has jellyfish like this, just off the coast 2 weeks ago. Looks like soup.

Thousands of jellyfish are swarming near Trat’s coast near Ratchakarun beach in Muang district. They are hungry and they are there to feed on plankton swept in during the rainy season. The local people say the colourful jellyfish always visit the coast during this time of the year.
