Diver airlifted from Similians after ‘fish’ attack

Diver airlifted from Similians after ‘fish’ attack

PHUKET: Russian tourist Rustem Teregulov, 39, was airlifted by Royal Thai Navy helicopter from the Similian Islands to Phuket yesterday after he was bitten by a fish – or possibly a moray eel – while diving in the world-renowned national park.

Mr Teregulov today told the Gazette that he was diving off one of the smaller islands about 1:30 pm when the attack happened.

“I saw some sand [shifting] like turbulence, and I swam very close and touched the bottom. That’s when a fish or something came out and bit me,” Mr Teregulov said.

The bite had peeled open the top of his hand.

“I didn’t see the fish. I think it was a barracuda,” he added.

Mr Teregulov, a Moscow businessman, surfaced and boarded the 32-meter power yacht he was diving from and received first aid. Rope was used as a tourniquet to stem the bleeding and his wound was bandaged, he said.

Vice-Admiral Supot Pruksa, of the Third Naval Command in Phuket, said that the Royal Thai Navy received the call for help about 1:55 pm.

However, the pilot could not land at the rendezvous point on Island No 4, better known as Koh Miang, until about 4:15 pm due to poor weather.

Mr Teregulov was flown to Bangkok Hospital Phuket, where he is staying for several days’ recovery and observation.

V/Adm Supot said that it was likely Mr Teregulov was bitten by a moray eel.

Mr Teregulov, a frequent visitor to Phuket, said the incident would not deter him from returning. “Of course I’ll be back,” he laughed.

In April 2005, 32-year-old Matt Butcher of Stanstead, Essex, in England, had his left thumb bitten off and eaten by a giant moray eel while he was diving at the well-known East of Eden dive site in the Similan Islands. Click here for full story.

Russians, the nightmare of every professional leading a dive. They do never what you are telling them to do, they touch everything and give a fuck about dive roules.

Eel makes meal of diver's digit

Matt Butcher says he won't be
    feeding any more eels.

PHUKET: A 32-year-old Briton is recovering in hospital here after his left thumb was bitten off and eaten by a giant moray eel while he was diving at the well-known East of Eden dive site in the Similan Islands.

Matt Butcher, of Stanstead, Essex, said he had fed the 2.2-meter eel regularly over the past 18 months, and that she was well-known in the diving community for her friendliness.

“Many people dive there to see her,” he said from his bed at Bangkok Phuket Hospital. “She will swim in between your legs or curl herself around your arms. Divers often feed her scraps of food taken from their liveaboard boats. She likes sausages and will even eat fruit.”

Mr Butcher told the Gazette how, on April 18, he and his buddy, 21-year-old Becks Herbert, from Norwich in England, had descended to around 14 meters with some food for the eel.

He said, “I’ve been feeding the eel for 18 months and nothing seemed different on this occasion. She seemed quite playful, and was playing with Becks, while I took the food – a sausage wrapped in a plastic bag – from the pocket of my BCD vest and threw it to her.”

Mr Butcher said the eel (Strophidon sathete) circled round behind him and latched onto the thumb of his left hand, which was still holding the bag.

“I couldn’t get my thumb out of her mouth once she had started biting. The teeth of a moray are angled backward so she got a better grip [on my thumb] every time she bit down,” he said.

“I tried pushing the fingers of my right hand into her mouth to try and force her mouth open but she did not let go; she could taste blood by then…

“She was shaking her head from side to side, biting harder all the time. Five seconds later, my thumb just came off.

“She ate it and swam away. I didn’t even have time to reach for my knife.”

Mr Butcher and Ms Herbert surfaced and returned to their dive boat, the MV Queen Scuba.

He received first aid from Royal Thai Navy (RTN) personnel at Similan 9 Island before National Park staff took him by speedboat to Tab Lamu, whence he was transferred to Phuket.

Mr Butcher praised everyone involved in rescuing him. “They were great, everyone from the crew on board the Queen Scuba to the RTN, the park rangers and the hospital. They all knew exactly what they were doing.”

Mr Butcher, who is right-handed, has been told that surgeons may be able to transplant one of his big toes to replace his thumb.

He said that he will continue diving – although he will no longer feed eels.

He added, “I was wearing shorts during this dive, and I’m just glad that the thing didn’t swim up one of the legs and bite something else.”

Feeding wildlife is illegal, and in the case of feeding the eel sausage, which looks like a thumb, truly stupid.

Watch the video. You'll see why most divers agree that this yoyo should not be allowed in the water again.

btw, didn't see "Ed" last time I visited his/her home. Hope this dope didn't interfere with his/her happiness.

Agree. Feeding the fish is a definite no no. Pleased to see the fish coming off best in these encounters.

The video of the thumb being bitten off

    Moray Attack!

A scuba diver is attacked and gets his thumb bitten off and eaten by a giant Moray Eel! Filmed in Thailand. Includes footage of having his toe sewn onto his hand to replace his missing thumb. Scary funny and shocking, as well as stupid mad and silly. Beats a shark attack any day.

Being a Russian "businessman" I am pretty sure that he was asking for the airlift and didn't mind paying in the least.

As for that video... I mean, how dumb can you be?

In the background was a Titan Trigger Fish and they are notorious for attacking divers that venture into there territory, so if the eel did not get him the Titan would have.

    That guy is a munter.

What the hell is this guy thinking of!!!!!! my mates know this Eel and 'She' is quite friendly....but my friend always tells all divers to keep their hands very close to their body and their hands tightly closed as she'll take off your ingers in a flash...

So what company was this and If this guy has been diving with this Eel for 18mths then he's a complete toooooool. A-he should know better...and B-id he a dive master or instructor...if so then he is showing other divers that playing with dangerous animals and feeding wildlife unnautural food....is good??!!!!!!

Reach for your knife!!!! What the Fu*k!!!! I hope that was to help 'Emma' (apparently that's her name according to my mates) remove this plebs digit...rather than to kill her to keep his mangled thumb..... tosser....

I love the footage at the end which shows this Chud's hideous excuse for a thumb...."And it's all good" yeah mate looks great ya FREAK....oh and by the way if you had used some common sense....you'd still have a thumb!!!! Arsewipe.

I hope he goes and plays with salties in N.Aus...can't wait for that footage....being his last. PRATT.
