PP-R pipe - the green stuff

    Why?

    What's so good about it?

We're currently plumbing in our boiler and shower and I keep seeing this green stuff mentioned on various sites.

Does it really make that much of a difference?

Our hot water run from boiler to shower is about 3 m.

Should we go out and by some green stuff or will a pot of green acrylic cover our mistakes?

yes its green, you need a tool to connect pieces together though about 3000 baht, this is meant to make it DIY. I think its good for hot water, and i think is cheaper then copper. Though i havent found a place that has in stock the full range of fittings.
What boiler do you have out of curiosity?
im hot its so hot today.......milk was a bad choice!

The point of the green pipe is that it has a lock system that relies on a special cutting tool. specifically in home pro this is on discount. This pipe is for DIY for that reason, the blue stuff you will have to sand edges and bond together.
I am interested but i cant find the whole range, i might have to go blue instead, boring blue and copper.

Im not saying you cant try and do it another way, but it is designed to be cut with a tool that snaps 2 connections together. I think the tool is expensive homepro do a special on the tool ar 3000 baht. If its only short copper or blue might be a better choice depending on the pipes temp.

    Thai ppr pipe says this;
It can be used for both cold and hot potable water upto 95 deg c upto 50 years within certain pressures.
The tool welds the 2 pieces together creating 100% leak proof double thickness joints.

green peace certidy its green credentials.

Its smooth service increases water flow. Can be used for many applications and is able to intergrate with other pipes due to universal fixtures.

But the tool is the main point, you wiuld think they would just loan it as its useless after you.ve finished?

The green pipe is heat welded by "the tool" If you already have the pipe why not try a hot air heat gun? Let me know if it works.

I had that idea in my head too..i will ask my electricians to let me try with them tool...and also a crasy idea but why not try the hot metal thing for the hair (curly hair) that I have..sorry don't know the name in English !

its a pity to put that away...and where i live i don't have any shops for such things...but if it doesn't work must go back to copper pipe ..if i find some !!!

and yes its also a pity to use this machine for 3000 bahts only one time ! and put that in a corner somewhere...that i will probably not use it anymore before a looong time.

As the others have said you need a welding tool, here in Cambodia they're $50 to buy, I think using anything else but the tool won't have a good outcome as it heats the inside of the connector, you then push the pipe into the hot hole and it welds together. You might be able to heat up a piece of round metal pipe that's the right side and use that to heat the inside of the connector, but sounds like trouble.
Most of the shops here that sell the pipe also rent the tool.

The main benefit of PP-R is that it's designed to be used in a pressurised system. My plumber mate tells me the blue PVC is designed for drainage, contrary to what your local plumber might tell you. If glued properly blue PVC will hold for a while on lower pressure systems, but you'll be lucky if it stays that way for 5 years, never mind 50.

there are different grades of blue pipe, some are suitable only for drainage, the better quality suitable for normal pressurised cold water systems

This is one of 3 that is neccessary, the others for bigger pipe i presume waste pipes, are even more almost 5 times the price! There is also different grades the green pipe with no stripe, 2red stripe and 2 white stripe have higher life span because of composite. It might be worth using the green pipe for hot and the blue for cold, or at least for waste then this should improve lifespan and efficeincy. Still cant find whole sets anywhere. Price list is on Thai ppr site.

I think using the smaller size for hot water would be much easier and cheaper than copper; the flexibility helps a lot

In the UK they have cream plastic hot water pipe that you can thread through and bend around; the fittings are all push fit and work well, so I am not sure why this green pipe is being used rather than the cream type

I did see someone was importing it and reselling at the same price as copper though!
    I have reported your post

The white stuff is underfloor pipe, which is why so flexible, most plumbers use it instead of copper and just terminate at the boiler end with copper. I saw a plumber throw away a lot as unused scrappage in the Uk it cant be that expensive!! I finally found pvc guttering in chiangmai, but its white, cant do white on wood house....the shopping continues.
