Thread: Water from a bore hole --fit to drink

Have a 40 metre bore hole on a hillside with no habitation above water looks good --any real problem with drinking it --i know taste and see but is it a good idea?also is there anywhere to do a proper test of water quality

You say no habitation but is there any cultivation above your bore ?

Put a filter between the well and the house it should be fine you can use Zeolite in the filter or carbon, resin and manganese up to you

Why filter all the water when you only need to clean the drinking water ?

Have you got a mother in law?

No its jungle

Definitely get the water properly lab tested before drinking it, carbon filters will remove anything that's living in the water but not arsenic or other minerals that can have serious long term health implications. To get rid of those you'll need a reverse osmosis system.

I'd taste a sip before I worried about spending any money , bore water ain't rain water as such .

It's normally quite hard with dissolved minerals , does soap lather in it ?

I am in much the same position as you except that our bore is a lot deeper.
I think you will need to get the water tested to be on the safe side.

We had the water from our bore hole lab tested. It only cost $20 but was worth every penny as we discovered it contained arsenic at a rate of 200 parts per billion which is a dangerous level and greatly increases the chance of some cancers in later life.

i think its hard it reafdily forms a scum

you can fill clear plastic bottle with water from well, cap it and put in window for sun and watch to see if anything grows in it. That will indicate the bug status, but not deal with minerals.
Our bore is 33 meters and we have been using the water for cooking, etc with no problems for 12 years.
We still do buy bottled water for drinking but that is more because of the cooler than the quality of the water.

have you thought of putting your well water in the fridge to cool it?

Take a sample to your nearest hospital. They should be able to check if potable. Then get it checked by a pump,equipment supplier for water quality for plumbing use.

yes, that was what we did for the first few years, but went the luxury route and bought a couple of water coolers. They make a great toy for 3 year old daughter, she just loves to play with them and has mastered the handles and opening and closing bottles by herself. I am awestruck at how much fun she can have with such a simple addition to our house.

Seriously though, keeping the water in the fridge is a big hastle since there is seldom room for it and keeping it stocked is a real challenge. So the water coolers are a good cheap solution at 12 baht a bottle.
