Yep. I wore out two lawn chairs and a beer cooler just watching. Got to love country living. Wife's Dad showed up yesterday after a long (12 hour) boat ride and brought along about 200 kilos of dried fish. The garage is humming with activity as a whole gang (including two of the guys who helped build the house) are weighing and plastic bagging dried fish. Reckon the old man is gonna make some good bucks out of this. Dogs are watching, but not really interested as they don't eat fish. Mynah bird is screaming "gago" gago" (crazy) at everyone and cackling like a maniac. I have retreated to my office.

I used to fit CCTV systems for homes in the UK.

    1. Don't fit CCTV unless you intend to record the info.
    2. Make sure the hard drive is not in sight.
    3. Don't fit CCTV camera's the shout out you have something to protect. Fit discreet cameras.

There's an argument the cameras attract intruders. That's true to an extent. Personally i prefer to use discreet cameras that are almost hidden so that i at least catch the criminal in the act, rather than them wear masks of some sort because the cameras are obvious.

Make sure the hard drive and cameras have a good FPS response.

You have opted to have a high wall and a solid gate so you can't see outside the property. Suggest you not worry about some sort of sophisticated "security" system but first simply being able to see who is at your gate.

A single video camera pointing at entrance of the gate along with a motion sensor light is all you need. Video from camera feeds a small LCD inside the house. Motion sensor powers the light, camera, LCD and some sort of audio alarm to let you know someone/something is at the front gate. No need to record video as the function of the system is in essence no more than a peep hole on a door.

Cheap but has a flaw. Will need some sort of door bell when someone wants in. What are odds of locals sorting out they have to push it to gain entry.

Not altogether true. We have installed two systems (not CCTV) with 2-3 days battery backup.

seems to me u'd be better off with a door entry system, vidio/audio. not secure in the burglary sense but would meet yur other needs.

In Tanzania we had a good system to keep out unwanted visitors - a cattle strength electric fence wire about 6 inches below the top(inside) of the wall /gate - used to make them squeak a bit !!

Sorry to bump this ancient thread but after nigh on 10 years we've accumulated a few busted CCTV cameras. They're electric so they'll break, I understand that.
Over all the system has worked well and hasn't proved to be exorbitantly expensive however there have been the occasional stuff ups.

The bloke who did the original installation ripped us off by installing fake Sony cameras, we've replaced most of them.

The second bloke was just a wanker and we were pleased to here that he'd done a runner with various folk after him.

Now, the third bloke is great. He set up shop here in the village a couple of years ago and is absolutely reliable and seems to be honest. Says it like it is and responds appropriately.

So, to the point; I've got 4-5 cameras that are allegedly broken. Our man is sympathetic to the fact but has no interest in fixing them yet I wondered if they could be fixed?

So, my question to you mob is simple. Have any of you any experience in fixing such things or know of anyone who does.

I'm well aware that in this splendidly efficient modern era in which we exist everything is assumed to break. There is no quality, there is no future but, it would make me feel slightly warm inside if I could fix these things.

    Over to you.

p.s. Yes, I know I can buy new ones for bugger all and they'll break too. I just like the idea of fixing the ones we've got gathering dust in a box in the shed.

Yes, I have googled it but the Indian technicians don't speak and the rest are drunk.

    Cheers

Honestly at this juncture (10 years old), The technology has changed so dramatically with image quality, low lux image quality, resolution, speed etc that it would be best to just upgrade. I have 8 and use my App on phone and can access them any time, anywhere.

Have 4 cameras inside and 4 outside. Can also see on mobile phone. Have appr 4 weeks memory.
Also useful checking what happen when we not there, like did find one day MIL do Gardening work for us.
She was quite surprised when my wife called her from Norway and could tell her colour of shirt she was wearing.
ALso have some detectors inside house and my plan is when/if triggered and I get SMS, can check on cameras what happens.

You have to select a new company you will trust that they make use of the existing usables and exchange only the helpless things. I have just similar case with 4 cameras installed 10 years ago for 20kB.
Now got exchanged just one camera, got a new receiver and a new web, for 10kB. This is always a case of a good luck and hope.
