Thanks loytoy we have tried to keep everything traditional and not compromise the quality or the material.. I hope that when finished, we would have put back something of interest and reference as it seems there's not a great deal left in the cities anymore.
Its more expensive than concrete, but the process of finding /buying wood is exciting. Then to see it go up feels different to concrete more satisfying. im so pleased that we have had a great builder and time to pull it all together.
    More pics soon.......

Bathroom, ventilation will come on when switch is on. 12v led lights will give downlight, and 2 side lights will sited either side of the mirror. The shower is a moya glass cubicle, sited on a concrete floor base which will be tiled. The viva board will be tiled and a teak wood rail will be routed for te connection of wood and tile to flow better. American standard toilet, because there flush is much better than most in my opinion. Vainity sinks and all fauces will be chrome old english style. This will be a clasic english bathroom and te toilet will have a hard wood toilet seat, dont like plastic.

Here you can see the 2nd bedroom with the ceiling now complete, this will be painted a whit to brigten the room a little. Led lights 220v will do te downlighting, as well as side lamps for reading and led tv. In the trrace outside bedroom the ceiling has been completed to te same finish, it will also have led lights and wall lights for mood moments. This space will be a casual area for lounging at night serving both bedrooms. It also looks out to doi suthep troug the folding doors which is higlighted by windows that will be added in te doors and a tall slim window.
Hifi, tv and lan connections serve for home cinema. Traditional antique furnit

ure fabric will adorn the areas to lift the wood and add colour and interest(apparently)?

    Extension. Very exciting

Here are some external shots, as you can see the land is narrow and long, the thinnest part where the main house is only the minimum distance of 1.5m either side. The wall will be a concrete wall upto 1m and then bamboo upto 2.5m high. The side is already raised and has a retaining wall upto about 2.25 m above normal ground level. Flooding is only a couple of hours, for 2 days in very heavy rain over wet season, upto about 40 cm. Flooding from the river ping is not likely as the meander we are on has recently been walled with cocnrete and stone upto 5-6m, though it never flooded before it was going to infringe on eroding the road. However this is 800m away.

Some front finishing, as we are niw getting the finishing team in for the main house. They will be sanding and painting the whole house. It is all wood apart from tiles in bathroom and tiles on the ground floor. The finish will consist if shellac and lacquer with an oil on the inside, and a clear satin wood stain on the outside. The steps are mai ma ka, hardwood and stunning detail they will be on the bottom lift at the front and the steps on the back terrace.

Hi, the wood is treated for termites when it is finished, but being very old teak there is not a lot to worry about. The wood that is not teak like steps and floor will be treated then sealed with shellac a natural product of thailand and lacquer.

Termites love using other materials to find weak spots, so not connecting wood in the ground, or where it cant be seen will cause issues. Like i have said using reclaimed old wood means the wood has survived probably without much treatment from previous owners, so this means normally it will be ok.

However because wood can be expensive and treatment is not expensive its always best to do this where ever is necessary.

Dont worry to much about all the little bits as Thais are very aware of this, and will offer options either naturally or chemically to eradicate the threat. I hope you look forward to the finish and more pics like i do.

Marmite pink would be everywhere if my wife got the interior design job!!! luckily she did not!

    Hi Rob
This house is loosely based on Northern styling, where as around Bangkok upto Ayudaya the style is different. There are some good books of reference but the best are in Thai, but for me pictures are enough to start the process.
Wood is not that great in and around Bangkok, they dont have the same quality as in up North and the prices are a lot more. If you want to build in something else, you could add wood features to keep the costs down. Im happy to help you with my experiences and any questions you might have?

All the best in your build.

Here are the updates for the last 2 months,

Here are a beautiful set of steps we bought, with the original run and came with 25 beautiful grain steps. we have used the rest for the back stairs that you can see below.

Here you can see the the back set of stairs that lead upto the terrace to the master bedroom, this comes off the second kitchen.

Here we have the metal roof starting to go on metal rebar is drilled into the wood post and welded to the purlin.

Here we are at the back of the house, you can see the roof has been completed, we went for a stonger batten for the tile and rafter to make sure there were no problems.

Up above on the extension, looking out to the terrace and master bedroom. The components of the extension are better than the main house, as well as being cheaper. We have over a period of time been able to get to know the wood yards and owners and get calls when new wood comes in, and get the best deals.

We finally find wood for the floor in the extension, it comprises of mai Daeng(redwood) and Mai pa du in 3 meter lengths and with widths of 38-50 cms.

    More to follow......

Here we see the wood going down for the floorbaords, we have a good range of woods but the main extension and terrace only consists of larger thick wood and should look nice when cut and finished off.

Looking back at the main house, from the ensuite bathroom, into the master bedroom.

Here we have the ceiling for the front of house, over the Sala this was a last minute decision that has worked out realy well.

Looking out and down to the lower part of the stairs. This wood is Mai Taeng(not mai daeng) its a very nice wood with nice colour and grain.

Here with the ceiling above the front terrace, we decided to use a rattan mat to change the look and give a bit of detail and soften the feel. This is from Cambodia and is a high grade weave.

Ok, now we start the sanding and colour. The total of the main house has 500m2 of wood to colour, including posts.

Another pic inside the 2nd bedroom, glass isnt inside but we have a quote for the main house that seems reasonable and should proceed shortly.

Here we have the inside of the main house, looking from the front door, and down the walkway.

Looking to the front of the house, spotlights are about to go in, as well as windows. after the walls are done they will start machine sanding the floor.

finally the front door, the outside with lanterns from the Thai/Cambodia border.

Led spots go in and are tested, these were from the local electrical store.

Some detail around the steps, and finishing to the steps.

Right lets keep going with the updates...

Here we can see the house layout from a side road, the house has a size of 22 meters long by 8 meters wide. We have about 400m2 garden behind and about 650m2 at the front.

Here we can see the extension master bedroom south facing wall being built, teak windows and cladding will fill the frames. We are going for green glass in the master bedroom as running feature. frames width is 45cm apart using 4x2 redwood. You can just see the 50cm wide floor planks of which there are 8, a nice feature to this big room(6m x 5.5m).

Looking from the door through to the extension the builders are clearing the space for the new frame about to go up. We have used metal in this part of the house because of cost and ease, we are following the same ceiling design which meant you wont see it when hidden. Instead we will cover with wood in the way it would have been if a wood roof.

Here we have the back terrace with the old wood from the stack in the previous shots. It has been planed and has come a real treat. These planks are 38 cm wide and follow the bedroom round to the doors on the side and into the main house. A ballistrade will be going up shortly.

Here we are on the top half of the steps up to the back terrace looking down the line with the master bedroom on the right, with the 2 bifolding doors. ~With the folding doors to the main house and terrace lounge. You can see the big mai daeng posts we bought and the quality of these beasts.

Here we see the close up, of the folding doors into the lounge and the quality of finish with a spare floorboard being tunred into the step down which looks great. The builder we have had has been a real pleasure to work with where any request, or working on his own initiative he produces beautiful results.

Here we have the awesome 3m+ long windows that give light and views to Doi Suthep temple at nights all lit up. Fitting luckily between the posts. This teak was a great buy from a place we have come to find all of our good wood finds, thick nice quality Teak.

Here we are inside the master bedroom with the inside ready for the electrical install to start. All glass will be cleaned and siliconed to stop rattling and improve sealing. These bedrooms upstairs will not have aircon but fans, with the 3rd bedroom downstairs the only aircon bedroom.

The floors have started to be saned in the main house so all the junk has been move into the working area. You can see the folding doors out to the terrace, this will give the bedroom a further added space of 12m2 making the total 44.5m2.This terrace is north facing and will be a nice shelter spot for mid morning/ afternoon hot sun hanging. It will also increase the cross ventilation we will be using to maturally cool the house.

Lastly for upstairs we have the ensuite bathroom, with some big tall doors opening into a cosy 3x2.5 m bathroom. It will have all the usual with vanity basins half clad in wood and the other a natural stone tile. The shower will run across the whole of the back wall with glass screen and door. Plumbing is just about to go in and will follow copper pipes and electric multi-point heater.

Here we have the inside of the main house, the split levels was the feature that we loved about the house we first bought. Here you can see the floor boards sanded, the deep colour from the redwood is amazing. Front door down the walkway to the outside terrace.

Here is the front terrace, that leads to the main seating area and down to the steps and garden.

Here we have the sala seating area, a traitional part of any Thai home, looking over what we will be a tropical garden.

here from the top sala space we have the guest seating area, here you will notice the floorboards are teak from the original house.

Here we have the electrics, and more modern aspects of the house, by using simple sleek lights we hope they they will sit back and not overtake the traiditional aspects of the house.

Here you can see the ceiling above the front terrace, with the ventilation for the roof space stretching over the internal main house and extension. The only part of the house im not happy with as the cross beams have been covered with Teak MDF, but we hope the rattan matt will obscure that. They are not finished yet, but when we are, i might decide to open them up again.

Well thats the upstairs lets move downstairs, we have compromised slightly and used concrete block. We feel however that we can add wood doors and windows and fabrics to soften these down and blen them in better with the top. the main difference is that we are not try to hide to wood posts downstairs as you will see....

Here we are coming down the back of the stairs from terrace to Thai kithen/utility, we have a galley style that will have folding doors to close or open up to the bigger main kitchen.

The folding doors from the kitchen to the main kitchen.

Looking back at the stairs you can see it currently open, this will be wood clad around frame and also fixed windows around the steps on the left. There will be a door on the right to enter into the kitchen directly from upstairs.

Looking out from the folding doors into the kitchen looking over at what will be a window seat.

inside the kitchen area looking down the house, there is the bathroom on the right and the large third bedroom on the left, with the casual lounge juxtaposed.
The dreary blockwork is now rendered and when painted will liven up the living areas, once the tiles go down also a light stone it will start to bring in that light quality feel.

further down the house we have the walk in reception rooms, i wanted to make into bathroom, but both wife and builder disagree at the moment. i will have to wait for a quiet moment and tell the 'other builder' its in the plans. maybe. The decking will have a window(shutter not glass) and block work below.

The front outside has been blocked up and windows let in light on both side, the front door still needs to be found however. we are coming ever closer to the finish and we are very excited about the prospects of completing and getting to live inside this house.

The inside on the left another reception area where the consumer unit will be housed. The windows came to a total of 20,000 badt for a mixed lot of 10 (5 with glass and 5 shutters). The space you see will have to be a slightly smaller window and we are still looking for this.

here are the plans for finishing, i made these on sketchup.

the top picture is the upstairs 1st floor, and below is the ground floor.

As you walk through the front door, there are right and left reception rooms, the right reception room will be in the future an ensuite bathroom for the bedroom downstairs. The picture actually shows the informal lounge for the bedroom guests. This house is a wood house and though we have had to conceed this in part downstairs, where ever possible we have wanted to add wood as much as possible.

The lounge area with the 2 teak foling doors, the concrete is to stop hard rain pushing through an so they actually become big open windows to let in light and make a view and give ventilation. This will be informal to the bedroom, a second lounge downstairs. 6mx5.75m

    the right reception room.

This is the bathroom downstairs, it will be handmade bricks all inside with a mini wood shelf library.

Inside the bedroom the big doors to outside, this room is 8.50mx3.50m.

The bedroom from outside with no wall and door yet.

Here we have the downstairs main lounge, this was going to be a kitchen lounge, however we have decided to make the are through these wooden doors a galley kitchen instead.
This will open up to an outside terrace and the views of doi suthep.

This is the left side of the lounge, the open areas are going to have walls and windows on the left and at the end the folding doors across the width.

looking across the space of the lounge, this area is 6mx8.5m and will be an open lounge to an outside terrace with bbq and the galley kitchen.
Tiles will change the look of this floor, we are going with a light stone ceramic tile and a terracotta tile for the small kitchen area.

Galley kitchen, will have hardwood kitchen cabinets and hopefully stone counter top. but will be based around traditional and modern items for clean and functional cooking fun.
this leads up stairs to the terrace and master bedroom.

Thank you both for your kindness, it really is a great build. I can see why people get frustrated, but we have been lucky. We have taken our time, which i think on a big build is important. This house is an idea from the head, and has worked from paper to reality. It has been both the hardwork of my wife, and im very proud of how its turning out.

I cant wait to finish this and show you guys more pics, hopefully very soon.

This house will be a great investment, house for life or other but i am happy with 99% of it and thats not bad going.
