Biogas was tried out in Africa with few projects sponsored by the World Bank, little success was seen as the people was not carrying out the necessary maintenance basically, and it was too early eventually...

This renewable - environment friendly way to produce energy such as gas for cooking or to produce electricity is being implanted gradually in Thailand near Pig Farms, rice mills or Tapioca plants...

There are plenty of studies available of this subject and many existing facilities to view...

A small biogas system can be built next to a village as well, it will take care of excrements and compost material by decomposing those and in return provide gas to be used in many different ways.

A heat exchanger as proposed by Marmite will only provide cooling or heating, a bisogas facility is generating energy, therfore much more interesting, comments wellcome...

They do that quite extensevly in the US landfill waste areas and use the methane to power generators or factorys close to the landfills.
And some dairy farms do it for their own power as well as pig farmers.also along the himilays and the high prairies of mongolia I think.

Africa is a damn poor place to try that, the Europeans showed then how to grow food on the land, and they so fucking stupid and lazy so they ran em off and went back to killing each other and starving.

Such small biogas plant will require about 8 cattle and 6 humans waste to produce around 4 cubic meter of gas at low pressure, to be used for ligthing orcooking...

No I have never saw it done in person but have seen it done on film and documentary a number of times and know it is possible to do on a small scale in homes.
In fact there was a thing on TV that my wife was watching not long ago, Dirty Jobs where this guy does all kinds of stuff and this program was at a dairy where they pumped the shit into digester's and used the methane to run gen sets and then it was dewatered under pressure and the shit was pressed into seed starting pots that were a mulch when the plants were planted pot and all.

A village in India has a simple set up, everything goes into central chamber and the gas is used for cooking. If there's not enough gas from ppl, then manure can be added. After the gas is used, the waste is left to compost and then used for agriculture.

One day I hope to set up 'humanure' system , it would be great if it could also use the gas.
