    Back-Up Power

    Hello,

I would like to install backup power to my house in Loei Based on rough estimates my requirement would be 10kwh for at least 8 hours when needed. Batteries are expensive but I would like to look into that. I'm thinking more in line with a diesel generator. I'm wondering if anyone on this forum has some experience with this? Also any companies that I can contact. I've tried Google but the responsive are useless.

    Thank you,

    Randy

It depends how mechanically inclined you are. If you know which way to hold a wrench , an older diesel construction site gen set would be good

Does the power go out so often that you need a genset?

Diesel generators are noisy , further more, Diesel fuel is unstable and can only be stored from 6 to 12 months on average.
Most back up Generators that I know of in the west , are LPG, power and have a self maintenance program where they automatically start every day for a couple of minutes , without feeding power into the system.
I have a petrol generator that I use at my farm, and could in a pinch use to power some devices (Not A/C) , when I dont use for a long time I use a gas stabilizer.
I would hold on making a large investment in a generator system unless it is absolutely nessacery. V2H (EV to home ) is coming. Several EV models already offer it, Ford F150 already offers it , Nissan Leaf is another but I am not sure if it's an option in Thailand. With in the competition between EV companies , I am sure they will all soon offer the option.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

I bought a Honda EG6500 gen some years back after being without power for 2 days in the summer - never again, served me well, probably only has ~ 40 hours on it, they would have been 40 miserable hours without it, powers enough for comfort, I looked at a lot of options and this was the most economical and efficient for me, you do need to get a proper hook up / connection into the house....

If you only need 10kwh for 8 hours, i.e. average 1250 watts then a solar/battery system should be fine. It depends on max load though. I found that they are fine for fans, lights and a small fridge etc. However, you need a bigger system if you want to run deep water well pumps and larger current users.

I prefer smaller solar/battery systems on some equipments and have so far avoided disel backups. If you need one then get a water cooled system.
