Rust Removal from the House Gate

Hi, was wondering if getting a guy to dremel off rust from my gate and painting it will be a waste of time regarding the rust bubbling through the fresh paint.

Never tackled rusted metalwork and painting before.
Been away from Thailand so long that the gate deteriorated beyond what I would have let it get to.

Had a look at a neighbours gate that went from black to white and can see the bubbling...just not sure if they
had any prep work done...both gates same age.

    Thanks.

Or, ask your neighbours who have had their gates painted for recommended local tradesmen.

A lot of gates here, especially in mubans are wrought iron, not at all the same as stainless steel.

I thought this would be about some political scandal.

If it was stainless i don't think a) it would have been painted and b) he'd have rust issues of the sort he's describing.

I'd get a local with a grinder to grind back to bare metal and stick some rust treatment on it that stabilises it and then get it properly primered and painted. If you can't get that level of work done then forget it and buy stainless.

Thanks guys, yes it is cast iron...= rusty.

Will price the grinding cost/rust treatment.......and mixed primer/paint is 650 Baht anyway at Global.

Agree. Op, post a pic of the gate. Depending on how bad the rust, may not be recoverable.

Just a comment here, There are numerous grades of SST here. If the gate was a basic 301 and the weld process was poor it will rust like mad. One needs to be cautious with a gate maker and ask. It is best to make sure it is 304L and the the welding is done the same. The gate will withstand almost all elements for years to come.

If it is a basic steel gate, the best way is a full sand blast, then a good rust inhibitor under coat then a good paint. In the end though the cost of having a new SST gate might be cheaper and last a lot longer with no maintenance.

^ I was kind of assuming he'd get a quality grade of SS but yes.

Lanna, you could consider going eco friendly and have a green sliding entrance with a hedge, seen them done and our member Stumpy is keen on clipping hedges, he'd be round like a possum up a pipe and have it snippety snipped before you can say makers mark.

A neighbour and I once painted our iron fences at roughly the same time.

My neighbour repainted his in 24-48 hours. He just painted a new coat of paint over the old paint.

I used a wire brush drill attachment to clean off the flaking paint and any rusty bits, then I applied an undercoat, then two coats of paint.

Two years later, my neighbour's fence needed repainting again. Seven years later, my paint job was still looking good as new.

Yes, that's the material SpaceX builds their new super rocket from, the Starship.

BTW, did you know that Coca Cola is decent rust fighting stuff? I read a test of different types of rust converters. Just for fun, because of the Coca Cola rumor they included it into their test. Result was that Coca Cola is not a very good rust converter but there were some commercial products in the test that were less effective.

Except in coastal regions. I'd like to quote distances from the sea but I can't locate my info. Maybe only 5km for corrosion but maybe more.

Thanks for all the tips so far.

Gate is 1.5M tall and 5M wide..weighs a ton...roller wheels also rough so they will need to go.

    So :
    new rollers
    drill rust removal brush
    undercoat/paint combo tub

Some photos of what level of surface rust..not pitted holes...
I have no idea what the ballpark stainless 304L gates would cost this size...have to have a look around.

Also on a sidenote - I have a strip of 15mx3m grass needing removing, is a shovel what would be used to dig it out or a hoe or some such specialist garden tool ?
The land was never prepped before it was laid.. and so it was always lumpy and clumpy...grass OUT...cobbles on top of weedblocker IN !

Anyone got an idea if the gate photos above show it as being salvageable to remove the rust and then paint ?

Before primer, does an additional rust treatment need to be applied or is that the primer's purpose with metal paint ?

Hi there, I posted some photos of the gate a couple of posts up, do you think it is OK to tackle the gate based on that rust ?
    Thanks in advance.

In the ballpark of 30K for a 5m S/S gate around here. A lot depends on how decorated it is.

IMO, a wire brush and a Rust-Oleum type of paint will do the trick.
