    Kitchen remodel...

We have a detached kitchen on the back side of the house and even with fans running while cooking it becomes extremely hot and the burners by the window do not really evacuate the heat with the fan behind her so we decided to switch it all around and more importantly add an industrial style hood and a new 3 burner stove top.

Here is picture as it was before.

Before. The layout wasn't very efficient.

So I called up my wifes Uncle and he came by and we drew up the plans ( with the chefs approval of course) and off we went. We wanted to integrate the old counter cabinet set ups as they were in good shape.

I moved everything out and we started with the new cement counter top

New counter top, with stove and sink location. Uncle was doing the Thai bracing as I cut metal with Boon and he welded

I was the cement mixer and Boon did the pouring and finishing.

Ang did all the cement trimming while Boon and I were out figuring out how to modify the original tables to properly slide underneath.

We got the old cabinets mounted underneath and my part of helping was done until plumbing and electrical as I am not a masonry guy. They added wall tiles and counter top tiles.

With the tile done, We installed the new stove and sink.

Got the hood installed. Starting to take shape now.

I installed all the faucet plumbing and water purification system

My uncle does really nice Tile work. All turned out nice and being able to re use all the old cabinets which my wife liked was a big plus

Kitchen changes done. Hood works outstanding and pulls not only the fumes but a lot of heat out. The Kitchen is so much cooler and having moved it all to the wall that is shaded all day helped as well.

I was trying to convince my wife that there is plenty of room to add a nice center island so she can prep food etc but she doesn't prefer them and its her "Womans Cave" so who am I to say..

Brought in power from the outside back wall area next to the hood tube. This picture was before I had added the outlet. Same as the water system. Came in from outside wall.

Nice job. Would have hired you around a year ago if I'd known.

Personally would put in wooden cupboard doors, but looking good.

You just know at one point in the coming years you're gonna brain yourself after getting something out of the far left cupboard.

That Kitchen is bigger than YD's flat Turned out nice, brighter too.

We went external with the gas burners, an inside kitchen for civilised western cooking and outside for hot and smelly Thai cooking

I would have to knock two rooms together to get a kitchen that big, so quite jealous. Always wanted a decent kitchen.

BUT (!) - the lack of clear prep space would get to me....

I have a tiny prep space in my current place. It is an ongoing war, as my missus seems to find it the ideal place to put crap, instead of putting it away.....

I mentioned that to my wife before installing but she was dead set on it and honestly, anyone gonna brain themselves, it will be her. I seldom enter the kitchen other than to prep a few things for the Q..

Yeah, it is much brighter and easier to work around

Well in the main house we have a full western kitchen which is only used by me and has never had a Thai dish cooked there.

I agree with both of you 100%. I think after awhile she will come around to my center island idea. However it is her kitchen and her call and I do not cook in it. What I prep is for the BBQ and I can do that almost anywhere.

This is backside wall against the wall. The exhaust duct and the electrical

The power outlet next to the hood.

Added the other pan/pot wall holder and magnetic knife.

I got busy and have not had time to finish up and paint the wall above the tile and the back wall area.

Inspired to start a ‘Detergent, water and my Hatari fan’ thread?

Blimey jp, that new extractor fan looks like ‘mind meld’ equipment from Star Trek.

Be careful not to invite Chico over.

Seems like best idea. She literally has enough room to swing a cat in there...

Yeah SW. There is plenty of room. I told her it doesn't have to be huge, a nice 4ft x 5ft with an overhang for a few stools. Right under the center light. The underneath could be storage space for some bigger pots and pans she seldom uses

Wood or granite top would nice.

Even just a stainless steel prep table at least.

The first thing I told myself when I saw the BEFORE pic was that I'd put those 2 cabinets back to back in the middle of the room to make a working space.

    Nice work though, well done.

From what I have seen of Thai's it would not be an issue given that nice white tiled floor.
Plenty of room down there to do whatever you want to do.

Stumpy I hope you made them benches low enough so you can reach on top of them.

Yeah... so slide a table into that centre space and watch as she starts to use it, starts to rely on it.

Then after a couple of months, suggest making a permanent worktop with some storage space underneath.

Job done... and job done on that kitchen makeover. Smashing, esp that cooker hood which looks like it might take the unwary out of the kitchen on the scenic route, or.. well.. remove someone's hairpiece or new hair-do anyway...

    Great thread - thanks!

    Very nice Stumpy!!!!

My wife is the same, if there's a flat space to put something, the flat space is filled by "stuff". I'd suggest since its a woman's cave, you put in a table where your wife can hang out with her friends and make the table top a butcher's block where she can slice and dice and chat with her gang.

Yeah man, and that baby pulls everything out incredibly well and is incredibly quiet. Has 3 speeds and a nice light too boot. Apparently there is an auto clean feature in it, we will see

Well here in lies the problem, My wife can get spun up if I attempt to "Push" ideas on her. This will be one of those things where the moment will present itself and when her and her sister and niece are sitting on a matt on the floor cutting up things Thai style I will offer to bring a table....You know TDupp....

Thanks Topper, It is far nicer now and a better environment for her to cook. I used to hear cooking for everyone and complaining how hot it was. Rule # 1, always keep the chef happy

    Few more pics

The little table against the wall is where my FIL eats. Apparently the table and the wood cabinets are family heirlooms. The glass faced cabinet was a handmade wedding gift for my FIL and MIL years ago. The other one my FIL made some 40 years ago. So while they do not really fit the room they work and the Missus Stumpy is happy.

But from the pics, you can see a nice island would be perfect....

^maybe one of those kitchen islands with wheels, so that it can be placed against the wall when not in use?

Your wife's kitchen is big, stumpy. One can hold zumba classes there!

Nice kitchen remodel, much more spacious. Cheers!

Nice work. As others said. I would also kill for a kitchen that big.
Having cut my teeth as a concrete form carpenter (Local 212 NYC) I am always amazed when I see them frame forms with tree branches. Amazing. If I had to use one word to describe Thais , it would be resourceful. I am always amazed to see them do so much with so little.
As for a center , I was driving on Mitepab road in khon Kaen and saw a place celling used stainless steel restaurant kitchen type tables . I am sure there must be a place like that in your area. You can have a nice center island work area , and you can push it over to the side when not in use, You could put locking wheels on it. Something like this.
