It's a curious thing, I spent five years living in 3 different towns and there always seemed to be some deviants nearby with fighting cocks. Those things can crow at each other all night; one crows then all is silent for 10 to 12 seconds, just enough time so you think it is finished, then another one crows, and so it goes, on and on.
Now I'm in a rural area and my neighbours have chickens with at least one rooster each. They crow but their noise doesn't bother me at all. We even had the windows open for a few nights recently, then the last couple of nights have got warmer so it's back to aircon.
The dogs are sometimes a problem, especially if there is a bitch on heat and horny dogs arrive from miles around. Their fighting and barking doesn't bother me too much, the problem is my dogs have much more acute hearing and they join in, from a few feet away, which is quite noisy.

We have an indoor kitchen and when she fries chili it can be almost unbearable.

Fondles, Armstrong, would you be happier living somewhere else given Thai cooking invariably has strong aromas...

I think they were recommending an outdoor kitchen that we have as well. Previously you mentioned fish sauce as a smell. It is not, its the chilies, pla khim and possibly pa la they were talking about. Perhaps your wife does not eat these kinds of foods. Also the splatter from the oil while cooking can be a mess.

I second that opinion!! We also have one and I'm glad we do.
Now is the time to do it, and at a minimal cost, I promise you. you would be glad you did.

I see from your floor part that the sink is on your rear left wall, it would be nothing to run a drain pipe out the back, a water line, and an electric outlet. you van get one of those one eye ,electric induction cookers, they work great .
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

I don't. However, I rather like the smell of Thai and for that matter any home cooked food.

    Trouble a Mill (continued)

For those who have been following my posts on an Aussie Style House Build, you may recall earlier posts on the Water Buffalo Wars and how the Poo Yai Ban was making life difficult for us; trying to assert our land was unable to be used for residential purposes; not having authority to build; doubts over the ownership of the land etc, etc... Let me be blunt, as is the Aussie way, the Poo Yai Ban is a foundation member of the UA Society. What's that you say? He is an Unutterable Arsehole who makes life difficult for everyone he deals with, villagers or government officials alike. He is a bully and a coward, and doesn't have a friend in the village. He is universally despised.

Because Yuri made life hard for him over his insistence of the Water Buffalo owners being able to trample over the rights of Ayong villages to a water supply free of cow shit contamination, he commenced a vendetta against Yuri and I over our house build. BIG MISTAKE.

After telling Yuri a complaint had been received by the Obotor about our house build, when it was actually the chief that complained, Yuri went on the warpath. For someone weighing just over 40 kilos it was a sight to behold. She became so focussed and single minded in pursuit of the chief all I could do was stand back in awe. First she arranged to meet at our land with the Obotor to discuss the Chief's complaint - she didn't want to rely on verbal assurances from an Obotor official that "everything would be fine." Then she arranged for a group of elderly villagers who knew the history of the land to attend the meeting along with the chief. A total of six villagers were invited. The meeting was scheduled to be at 10:00am 21.11.22, with four officials from the Obotor to attend.

The meeting quickly became a topic of discussion around the village. So much so that over 20 people attended (see photo below), with a collective wisdom of over 800 years of life in Ayong. The four Obotor members arrived - the boss and four senior members, PLUS two officials from the Amphur. The chief knew he was required there at 10:00, finally arriving at 10:40. A clear demonstration to the officials of the contempt he felt for the purpose of the meeting. After the late start I was concerned the meeting would wrap up quickly as the Obotor and Amphur officials would want to be back in the comfort of their offices ASAP. No worries there - the meeting went through until just after midday upon the arrival of a food truck (they never miss an opportunity do they?). Everyone stopped for something to eat and the officials took the opportunity to leave.

Aussie Style House Build-meeting-211122-pngFirst item of business, the Obotor boss asked Yuri to address the meeting and didn't she let fly, going straight for the chief with the ferocity of a pit bull. She had a carefully prepared list of questions to him, each one basically asking why he had complained about our build and his questioning the ownership of the land. He refused to answer each question until finally the Obotor boss stepped in and asked whether the Chief knew Yuri's father owned the land, "Chai" he replied, whispering. And did the chief know it was permitted to build a house on the land? He nodded, then when prompted to answer, "Chai" he whispered again. "The old people can't hear you" said Yuri, "Speak louder."

Having achieved her goal of removing any lingering doubt over the legality of our house build and the ownership of the land, the meeting moved on to address other land problems caused by the chief for the villagers at the meeting. Over an hour was spent recording details of each, with plenty of vigorous discussion, in typical Thai fashion, often with six people talking at once. All the while the chief was sinking lower and lower in his seat, looking straight ahead, answering any questions put to him in monosyllabic whispers.

The meeting concluded with a commitment from the Obotor boss to come back with answers to each issue raised in 30 days time. All except the chief voicing their appreciation.

It was a clear victory for Yuri and the villagers who had long suffered due to the chief's tin-god attitude. I'm immensely proud of the way Yuri organised the meeting and the outcome she achieved. As I've said before, she's the brains of the outfit.

As for the chief, well we've won this battle, but I'm yet to believe we've won the war.

    Progress Report - Week 4

After three solid weeks the build team have taken a well-deserved break to assist with the rice harvest back in their home villages. They have worked like trojans so it will do them good to spend time at home with family and friends albeit it won't quite be R&R for them. Work is scheduled to recommence 28.11.22

As of Friday 18.11.22 the build had reached the stage where the external block work excluding the front entrance was complete. One bathroom had the red bricks completed and the other bathroom was about 30% complete. So far the work standard continues to be highly satisfactory albeit I will be buying a welder's slag hammer to give to the welder. His weld quality remains high but the chipping hammer he made must have been misplaced...

Aussie Style House Build-weeklyprogress-211122-pngThe image shows the front of the house: it faces South. The recessed section of the verandah will add extra shade and a bit more weather protection. A pleasant place to sit and admire the view over a beer.

The image below shows the view from the master bedroom. The foreground will be taken up by Yuri's rose garden - she will get both the fragrance and the aesthetic from the roses. Happy wife, happy life.

A video to follow over the next week or so.

Since Bruno, my cross Pitbull/Staffy guard has arrived Soi dogs are a rarity in our Mooban when once upon a time they were a nightmare.

My biggest noise problem, I have three neighbours who have converted their houses into very upmarket Pool Villas catering to high-so Chinese Thais from Bangkok and they are awake all night partying. The women are the noisiest by far with their squealing and shrieking. There is also a converted farm area next door which has been converted to a Restaurant which is quite noisy but normally close down by midnight.

I just go to bed earlier now, about 3.00pm, and wake up around 1.00am and see half naked woman walking around the carpark.

I don't know if it has changed, but Puyai Ban used to be an elected position - so he must have some mates.

At one time the term of office lasted until retirement but it got cut back to 5 years several years ago.

^ GREAT VIDEO, so good in fact, I logged into my YouTube account so I could 'officially' like it.

^ I worry about the potential fallout for you guys with the elected official losing face at that meeting.

I don't know if it is the same everywhere, the gf told me that the authorities here tried the 5-year appointment but (for unspecified reasons) it didn't work and she believes our Puyai Ban has a job for life until mandatory retirement at 60. He also has two 2 i/cs on lifetime roles.
When I tried to get more details things got vague, she hates being pressed for details when she simply doesn't know the answer. Under cross-examination she said that a Puyai Ban can be removed from office by the head of the Amphur following a vote by villagers to remove him. She doesn't know of any cases where this has actually happened.
After that conversation I'll have to take her out for dinner, at least once.

That very Thai piece of wood in the window opening, what is it supporting? It looks very much like the section of concrete beam above it doesn't form a continuous lintel across the whole span of the opening.

She is correct. Elected until manditory retirement at 60.

Some bad loser antics but he is nearing 60 so he won't be in a position of power long. I am sure Yuri will not stop with just the last meeting. She will keep the pressure on along with other villagers until the prick is totally destroyed politically.
