    Adding a room downstairs

Most of of the downstairs is open, With a bathroom, an outside kitchen, and a hung out area by the goldfish pond. The whole downstairs is going to be my Man Cave.
picture from when the house was being finished.

At the later part of the build, I had to get back to work at a project I was supervising in NYC and put our a fire, so I gave the builder instructions not to finish dressing the columns at the back right corner of the house, because eventually I was going to build a room there myself. I know, I should had let the builder do it when he was there, but I wanted to leave a little work for myself so I can play Thai builder .
Anyway when I came back, they had dressed all the columns.
So now that I want to build the room, I have to knock down the dressing, so that I can tie the new walls into the columns. And by I, I mean the guys I pay LOL
    Day one.

I am well aware of the challenges we all face with the written word LOL.

So that you all don' think I didn't do anything. I first opened up the columns to see what was going on in them, before we started swinging the sledgehammer
I was firs going to keep the outside corner of the column dressing, but later on decided against it.

GREAT to see a building thread, love those!!
STRONGLY recommend you use an N95 mask, brick/cement dust can do a fair bit of damage to the Human Anatomy.

Good luck mate, hope it all works out for you....

Staging a picture is easy enough.. Some 30 minutes video in high speed play should be enough to convince me..

    Good Luck BB.

We did the same downstairs in the far left corner area of our place. It was all open but wife and I decided an enclosed family room type place where we could hang out and stay cooler, eat dinner and avoid being assaulted by flies and skeeters was in order. My wife's uncle and I did the wall additions, pretty easy and only took a few days. Like doing Lego blocks . I had the glass doors installed and HomePro did the AC.

Your pillars have angled accents over them making the job a little more fun. Ours were square.

    Enjoy the project.

from my previous posts you should know that me not good with words, so a picture thread you will get. Inspiring? only if you are easily inspired LOL
End of the week I will be getting a bunch of large boxes I shipped from the US , mostly clothes, (mostly the wife's LOL) some of my kitchen equipment , tools, and a self propelled lawnmower. So I need a place to put them. The space is 14x18 ft and since it is next to the downstairs bathroom would make a nice private guest suite , eventually I might build a room of the same size next to it.

When we were building the house, I left them with instructions not to cover the columns in that area, and I explained why.
When I return I was surprised that they had covered them . I guess I should have told them not to forget to cover them, then for sure they would have not LOL.
Those @-con blocks are so easy to work with. A few years ago it was hard to find someone to work with them, now , that's all they want to work with.
It would be nice to have that space downstairs as I get older and those stairs become a challenge.

    My thoughts exactly.

This area used to be fully open and pass through like yours BB. Now closed off. We did Q con blocks on left wall and back wall. Added a window and dual sliding glass doors with screens. The doors are open almost all the time just the screens closed albeit my dogs have learned how to open the screen doors with their nose.

    Facing the bathroom area

Has a full "Thailand" style bathroom. I planned all of this as I figured someday I might need it if I can't climb up stairs. Also there was a thought that my Dad from the states might come live with us.

This is our laundry room and my moto storage area. But can easily be converted to a room and knock a small wall section out and could share the bathroom downstairs.

I have to say though, I sure enjoyed having it all open underneath but am happy with the flexibility of being able to add rooms and for very little cash outlay.

You or your wife have a flair for design and decorating, You have created a nice living space.
My wife's idea of decoration is a large bank account. LOL. every time I want to buy something nice I can feel my wife's anguish while parting with the money. It's like pulling teeth. Funny she has no such problem buying cosmetics, LOL
I like your rattan living room furniture, I wish I could find something similar in Khon Kaen, every furniture store I have gone so far , and I have gone to may, they all have cheap crap.

So we are making a little progress
Got the cement for the Q-con block
    Adding a room downstairs-acc-cement-jpg
Made mix in a bucket with a drill mixer, very easy to do, and spread on a block
    Adding a room downstairs-acc-cement-mix-jpg
and the block went half way up. Tomorrow we will do the horizontal beams to straighten the wall and window side columns, and maybe put in the windows, that got delivered earlier. the q-con block is 7.5 , the room is in a shaded area so double wall was not nessacery.
    Adding a room downstairs-walls-half-way-up-jpg
And the windows are sliders with screens, Brown on the outside and white in the inside.

I wish I had installed one of these Man Urinals , especially as I am getting older and my aim is deteriorating.

You still can sit down, it's more convenient while long time awaiting - and no aim is needed anyway.

If you don't finish your build, you don't have to pay property taxes...

Yes you can, also drywall screws. Actually there is a trick that you can nail things into concrete also. We did it in the construction industry all the time when we nailed forms on concrete.
We used 16d double head common nails for easy removal when stripping forms, but you can use any size nail as long as you drill a hole the diameter of the nail. (if I remember correctly, for a 16d nail , use a 3/16 drill bit.)
We would drill right trough the plywood and the concrete, insert a piece of tie-wire in the hole and then drive the nail, The nail would mush the wire inside the concrete hole creating friction and holding straight than if you were driving the nail into wood. Believe it or not, it was difficult pulling the bail out. There is a trick for that also. LOL
