    Column and Slab Buildings

The Surfside Florida condo collapse made me recall watching some of the construction in Chiang Mai and China. It always shocked me how a dozen or more stories are supported by those spindly first floor columns that usually are within a parking area. The weight of the slab floors on each level add up to some huge numbers, and those columns have to support massive loads. I can't image they are earthquake-proof and would expect some of those buildings to collapse in an earthquake, especially with columns not being a constant concrete pour.

At any rate, this guy has some detailed information on the Surfside collapse some might find interesting. Even in this case, the number of columns is surprisingly small.

Don't know how safe I'd feel in one of these ...

A Chinese development company builds a 57-storey tower in a record 19 days in Changsha, Hunan Province in southern China.

The video shows a Mini Sky City skyscraper built at a brick-by-brick rate of three full levels per day.
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...

Having lived through the Loma Prieta earthquake and was in SF at the time it happened, I could never work or live in any structure more than a few stories high. I see these huge 30 story monster condos being built in BKK and it's amazing but how safe are they.....? Earthquakes are a random event. Long term who knows how they are degrading and like many to upgrade to the latest standard can be cost prohibitive and its better to demolish and start over. However most won't. It's a risk one takes I suppose.

I'm with David above, I couldn't live in one.

They are but being far from seismic activity not likely to cause building collapse.
However, Bangkok is sinking. Hence, will only be matter of time before subsidance and poor maintenace will cause one of the many high rise buildings to come tumbling down.

Not this guy. No way you could get me into one of those ugly rabbit warrens.
Rather a modest single storey hovel in the sticks with nearest neighbor at least 100 meters away for me.

He does not build it in 19 days ,it is prefabricated , and he assembles it in 19 days.
We were the kings of the Two day cycle . (erect a floor every two days) in NYC. And that was only on typical floors (all floor the same) . As soon as the deck hardened enough to walk on, we were erecting the next floor. We would wreck the floor, but we did not care, later in we would go back with self leveling and fix it. Getting out a week early and assigning the crane over to the GC could save six figures.

Same me Norts. Remote little village, quiet area. Can go watch the river rise after a good rain.

Looking at that rescue effort in Florida, I am wondering how they will remove the 13 slab floor plates to search each floor. They must have to cut them into sections and lift them out piecemeal. What a challenging effort.

My YouTube feed is now providing me with dozens of buildings around the world that have issues. Check out the swimming pool action on this tower in Shenzhen. This building has some type of resonance that is occasionally triggered, but they still have not figured it out completely. Been in Shenzhen a few times but not planning on being there again! Stayed in some of these tall towers in China.

The first and only time I have been there was the week it opened.

Parked my car in the underground carpark, they were drilling the support columns at the roof of the carpark it fitting triangulated steel reinforcements on each concrete column.

seemed real dodgy to me and an after thought, I have not been back.......................but its not pancaked yet !!

That's pretty much beyond doubt in Thailand. Wiser to live at ground level.
