Gave up on wood railings and changed to Stainless steel

When we built our house we used a lot of the old well aged Teakwood for much of the house accents and the hand rails and balcony. After nearly 6+ years having to replace and try and stain match the wood I gave up the ghost and we called our friend over that built our Stainless Steel gate and said "Time for a swap out". We sat around over beers and sketched up a design we liked. He measured it all and went back to his shop to pre fab it all up.

He came the day before and him and I and a his shop hand yanked out all the old wood which was a pain in the ass but as we tore it out we saw other water damaged wood and the balcony in the spare room was almost nearing the dangerous stage as the posts were rotting away.

The day of install he brought 5 guys as the SST is heavy and had to be lifted up, the balcony for the spare room was a 1 piece set up and took all 7 of us.

Pre Fab'd and ready. You can see the old wood stair hand rail in place in the back ground as well as my FIL doing his foreman job from afar. We left that until the last day as we were worried my FIL would fall

I piece set up for the spare bedroom

    Spare bedroom balcony railing in.

All railing around upstairs sitting room in and stair hand rails.

    Done with gate.

Now its not more maintenance and chasing rotting wood. We have a few cement areas that cracked and lifted when pulling the old wood out but nothing major. Overall I am quite happy with the change

It all looks very smart indeed.

One question: That gate at the bottom of the stairs looks perfect in the closed position. When it is opened, is there any kind of backstop to prevent it being bent off its hinges?

    Neat work as ever.

Just one minor quibble - the railing in pic three looks like overkill to me

Looks good. Currently planning our next house build (still at the pipe dream stage) and will be using stainless steel for the stair sides and terrace barriers rather than the current all timber/teak. Will still have teak banisters and handrails though.

They are wood grained printed aluminum.

Yes Shutree. If you notice in the pic at the stair bottom, there is an extra bar off off to the right. It has 2 functions, 1 is a stop, the other I had them put a SST piece with a slot in it so you can open the gate and lock it in place so it would not swing back and forth ( My design and the guy asked if he could use the idea and being a friend, I said no problem

Thanks BIP. I really loved the wood but you have to commit to maintaining it. Wood round these parts just does not hold up well if exposed to the elements year round. Water and sun caused dry rot even with good Teak. I just couldn't see myself spending time to keep it up, especially on the balcony.

Actually they are the same on our gate and after 6 years still look brand new and the gate is subjected to all the open elements year round. These being sheltered a bit should last until they torch me in the local temple incinerator, at least that's the plan.
