Decking for a sala and potentially exterior walkways

    Hello,

I am currently building a house and would like some guidance on material to be used for the flooring of a sala and potentially exterior walkways. The flooring will be exposed to the weather and must tolerate rain as well as heat.

While good wood would be a good solution, wood such as teak is very expensive as I have found out. So, I started looking at alternatives and have found a few.

    - From HomePro - they offer a fake wood plastic product that looks like wood and they claim can be used outdoors without any issues.
    - From SCG - they offer the SCG deck system - I think is a fiber cement plank that also looks like wood and they also claim can be used outdoors.
    - and then there are companies that offer wood such as treated pine etc which are more expensive.

For cost reasons, I am looking more at either the HomePro or SCG solutions.

Would appreciate guidance from anyone that may have used either of these products and can advise me on what the best product would be ? Or alternatively, suggest any other alternatives.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Why don't you use concrete as a Thai would do?
If you don't like the look of bare concrete then tile it with non slip tiles.

Thank you for your reply. I am using either concrete and tiles in other parts of the house but am looking for a different look in the sala and potentially certain walkway areas to enhance the overall aesthetics of the house.

When visiting hotels around beaches in Pattaya, Phuket, they have decking, cladding around swimming pools by such composite wood, mostly they call it Sheraa, you can see what happens after some time. Can see also in country when used for perimeter fencing.

There are different qualities, most of them claim it's the same durability as wood. For wall cladding it's more longer lasting, for decking not so long. You would need to ask the ones who have had it over long time.

    Welcome DineshR,
I am in process of installing a pool and will be using a composite decking material. While natural wood is always nice, here in Thailand it has a tendency to get attack by bugs and takes a tremendous amount of maintenance to keep it looking nice. Composite wood has many benefits albeit it is a bit expensive and limited on sizes.

I agree with you about cement. Cement walk ways typically pull in loads of heat and ants LOVE to build colonies under them and unless you treat it, it turns black with mold.

Hope you find what you are looking for.
For me aesthetics never come into consideration it usually just function and cost.

    Hello JPPR2,

That's exactly the type I am looking for - composite wood ... looks like wood but much stronger and will last longer with less maintenance. Can you give me some idea of what types are available and at what approximate costs for material and labor to install ? Thanks.

@ Klondyke ... Yes, I have used this thing called Sherra and it's not strong at all .. doesn't last. Not what I am looking for. I use Sheraa right now for wall cladding and it works fine but for flooring it's not appropriate.

    DineshR,

Here is the information on the composite decking we are using. I looked a few brands and this one was well reviewed and used at many resort hotels which was key to me as they usually have a lot of foot traffic so it appears to hold up well.

Let me know if you can read the contact info, It looks OK on my computer. The Brochure is very comprehensive and shows how to install it. I like the clip method. No screws to contend with

They have numerous texture options and various colors

    Some additional comments.
    • They state the warranty is 20 years. I always half that to keep it more realistic but 10 years with no sanding, painting, termites is a good run.
    • Real wood you will have termites in it in 2 years and water damage sooner.
    • If you are going to use it as a walkway they say it works very well. Keep in mind though, you will probably have to elevate it a bit to add siding as you can see in the first picture the composite material is extruded and has holes running along the length. They unfortunately do not offer end caps to cover it so if you left it open it might not look as nice or finished. I mentioned this to them and they thought that was a good idea. Maybe they will offer it in the future.
    • The only downside I ran into is that they offer limited sizes. I wish they would offer different lengths especially for decking. Not a big deal for most applications.
    • You cannot cut (rip) pieces long ways. Keep that in mind when laying out your design. Make sure when you measure out your application you account for the standard sizes

If you have any other questions, please let me know. This is my first time using it (There are some pics in my "Pool Plan" thread in this section). So far it is easy to use, easy to cut.

    Good Luck

Thanks so much JPPR2. The info is clear. Can you tell me approx per sq m cost so I can benchmark it against the other ones I am looking at (SGC decking, ThaiSun - 10 year warranty on material and 1 yr on install, all in cost - material + labor - 3333 baht / sq m - don't have SCG info in just yet). Thanks again.

    Lom,

    They are appx 10cm (4" wide), 2.5cm (1" thick) 182cm (6ft long).

On our privacy fence we took and cut the thin planks to get 2 per.

Let me get through my notes. We got a pretty good discount due to the size of our order. Originally we saw it at ThaiWatsadu but then contacted a Rep my wife found on FB. It was still far cheaper then Teak wood but still relatively expensive. If I remember correctly, all the deck planks, long side covers, privacy fencing and clamps delivered from BKK was about 180k baht. What that amounts to sq meter I'd have to go look it up. I know my Thai "general contractor" wife has all that....

My Wifes uncle, his partner and I are installing it. I never considered using the wood manufacturer installers. Probably expensive I'd guess.

I apologize. I estimated the planks while I was working. Here are the physical measurements

    Length 240cm

    Width 13.5 cm

    Thickness 2 cm
