Every time a thread like this appears there the inevitable Shipping Container advice, yet none of the people advising using shipping containers have used them themselves to build a house. I have yet to see an expat use shipping containers . Why is that?
First of all , the resale of a shipping container home would be very difficult because your potential pool of buyers is limited to those willing to purchase a non traditionally constructed home.
Second. Shipping containers are economically viable where construction labor costs are very high. hence it is economical to purchase a pre manufactured box and convert it.
Ask your selves the following question. An average shipping container 40' x 8' x8'6'' high costs an x amount in Thailand and then you still need to convert it. How much would it cost to build a 40'x8' x8'6" box by traditional means that would be ready to move in?
