    Ding Ding... time out.

The Carport area, hard standing and path.

The concrete shop tried their luck again and the arranged first delivery time of 10am passed and despite Mrs Toot phoning a few times they pitched up at 2pm - 22 Cu M in total on order and a large area to lay - the driver was sent packing with the same advice as last time, They arrived 09.30 the following day. I asked why she used them again and it was due to teh fact that the other two operators had no delivery slots when she wanted them. The time she'll use them.

The areas to be concreted were dug out with a digger and fine sandy soil ideal for hard packing laid and compacted. A crew of 11 on hand at site to carry on walling and concreting.

The depth is 12cm, i said i would have gone 16cm but she said its the same depth on her other ones and they are fine.

@toot - it's coming along nicely. Not long now until we see the finished product.

Katie, it is - he's pretty quick. I told Mrs Toot to slow him down so we can stretch this out for TD. I have to say she's been incredibly lucky with the weather, it can rain as much as it likes now as the roof is up.

I don't think 16cm would be over engineering as there are several variables involved that need to be taken into account.
In this case the load is probably only going to be a car or pickup so that's why it has worked for her before but you never know.
Whenever I have laid concrete here I go with 15cm as I don't believe you can trust the concrete to be the strength they say or that you asked for as they tend to add water to the mix to make it easier to work and that lowers the strength.
Also they use what I term "wire" as their steel reinforcing whereas to get really high strength I believe you need to use rebar. I know you have compacted sand for the base but it may still slump and then you need the tensile strength of the steel to stop the concrete cracking and or breaking up.

tell your missus I like her style regarding sending the trucks back. It is one of the things I hate most people who disregard appointments as it throws your plans out the window.

Like the thread and I would normally say good luck going forward but I don't really think your wife needs it.

I'll pass on your compliments Oots, she doesn't suffer fools me aside.

If the concrete was going to have a lot of drive over traffic then i'd be more concerned but its use should be light enough - fingers crossed. I am going to get her to add the expansion fracture cuts to hopefully direct the cracking where we want it.

Is there a difference in strength between the concrete breeze blocks or the Q-con blocks used for the walls? I know that they're not load bearing, but why the different blocks in different places?

I've noticed a lot of the big house builders use the Q-con blocks for walls, but there's such little mortar used to bind the blocks that the walls never looks strong to me. I guess the strength comes from the thick render?

^ The QCon is not strong per se and i would not use then in load bearing, the mortar is more a bonding agent/glue. Mrs Toot used concrete outside for strength and the QCon is, in her words, better soundproofing - bedroom - she's probably had complaints about screamers. The QCon is not good for hanging anything, you are best off drilling it out and packing it with mortar and a rawlplug.

Excellent reminder. A decent slope down to the road as well, she knows here stuff.

Who was on "dog" watch until the surface cured?

I have been explaining to Mrs Toot that Reachy thinks she is building some stables. I sent her this vid to show her she could be on to a winner.

NPT, great update on your Racing stables Coming along nicely

One thing I consider is just how much strength is derived from the the steel mesh when it's trampled to the ground?

Yep Dave, they take a walk and lift it once the pour is done and before its floated which gives enough density to ensure it stays off the bottom . Its not easy even with cement chairs on this depth which is why they do it this way. On a more high use prof area then it might be a problem.

    BTW

That concrete is quite a good mix, low water content. Despite their shite delivery its worth sticking with them.

If they lift the mesh evenly then great.

They are Isaan professionals Dave. Actually 3rd build this way and so far he's not let her down. I am beginning to wonder if he might be Reachy's mysterious BIL. Inquiries to follow.

It's get lifted by few cm somehow by it's own tension. Surely not 100%, but who cares...
Sometimes a mesh by split bamboo is used in Thailand and it keeps as well.

The good news is that at least three of the rooms seem to be rented out now.
