    Chittys humane mouse trap

It appears we have a new resident in Chez Chitty.

I was indulging in a night cap in the wee small hours of the morning and for a split second he appeared revealing his big ears and disappeared in a flash.
Being slightly inebriated I quickly wrote a note down on the calendar to catch Micky .

So today I constructed a humane mouse trap out of a few recyclable items that can be found in most households.
Note: Not all the items photographed were used and no mouse has yet been harmed in the making of this thread.

Carve the plastic bottles to make a pit and gang plank type contraption..
    Chittys humane mouse trap-20200107_180623-jpg

Use a screwdriver to melt the holes in the plastic then push the chop stick through.

Sellotape the wooden ramp to the edge of the pit robustly.

The theory is that Micky will follow a trail of peanut butter up the ramp licking his lips in a delirious frenzy then spy the prize.
A block of cheese tenderly balanced on the end of the plank.
Micky will be blinded by love and lust for the prize...

He will get his prize but fall promptly into the pit unable to escape, he will console himself with his prize and maybe tackle the carrots which incidently are in there to weigh the pit down.

Note the mouse in the pictures is not real and is constructed from bluetack, purely for illustration purposes.

The bait is set in a darkened utility room, we shall await the morning.

I'm quite sure Mickey and his mates have already moved on to greener pastures and won't be seen again around Hells Kitchen.

Find the normal metal cage Thai trap to be both humane and effective - and can be used to transport intruder to an open area for release.

I seriously do not believe what has happened!!
The cheeky little fooker has scoffed the peanut butter up the ramp then gorged on the cheese leaving his little teeth marks in the remainder.

He's managed to escape the pit!

    Need a plan b???

I've gone back in and laid the golden trail of peanut butter up the ramp, replaced the plank and cheese.
Then put a centimetre of oil in the pit.
I hoping the fat fooker will come out of hiding again for another foray.

Appreciate the humane approach, Chits, but apparently mice only really go for cheese in "Tom & Jerry" cartoons..

You should be baiting your Heath-Robinson contraption with "fruits or grains" according to the Interweb:
What do mice eat? If mice don’t love cheese, then what do they like?Research has shown that mice will eat pretty much anything that has minor nutritional value, so yes, mice will eat cheese.
Given a choice though, mice seem to prefer sweeter treats, such as fruits or grains. Setting a mousetrap with cheese is not the most likely bait to succeed, especially if the rodents have been raiding your cereal cupboard for any amount of time. Also, as many a cat owner can tell you, housecats love cheese, so I would definitely not want to leave some out on a trap that could snap or stick Mr. Whiskers!

While effective, your actions are far more humane than what I've done with them.

    Cheers for that.

Twice last night i reloaded the bait and twice Micky evaded capture.

I have now taken the carrots out of the pit because i believe he was using them to gain height and propel himself out, similar to the wooden horse in the Colditz movie.

I have also incorporated HNZ's idea and poured an inch of oil in the pit.

Micky is starting to gain my respect for his cunning, tonight we shall see...

I had a rat in the house once, put down rat-sack but he never touched it for about 3 days.

Then I mixed in some muesli, he was dead the next day.

We've got a dog who hates cats, shame he carn't catch this pesky mouse.

He took the bait again last night then escaped leaving a trail of oily foot prints much to everyone's amusement.

    Back to the drawing board....

A bigger pit is needed and more oil!!!

    It's war!!!

Don't you have a motion sensing camera around the house so you can see if it is the kids trying to get a decent meal

Chitty, I can lend you a proper dog that will get the job done... although it's probably not as humane as you'd like...

    Oops... sorry... wrong job!

    Here ya go...

Or you could borrow our tree snake if you'd like?

We don't have a mouse problem!
