The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats

    Foreword.

Well folks some will be aware i spent a couple of weeks over in the Land of Laughs being variously Ill for about the first 7 days whilst setting myself the task of building a car port on one of our....erm the Mrs bits of land in the first 2 weeks.

This is not going to be a detailed all encompassing build thread because it is just a Sala for the BiL but the build aims to be structurally more robust than Betty's Bamboo and Plastic one; sorry Betts. The photos don't cover every stage so apologies but to be honest my focus was on getting the job done and controlling how much I was blowing out me arse and sweating.

Now it has already been mentioned in another thread..

Q.Why the hell are you putting yourself through doing this shit and not paying someone else to do it?

A.I just don't trust people to do the right thing and as such and in my experience you have to watch them like hawks, the minute you turn your back and crack a cold one they move into Thai Fuk Up mode andall the direction you gave them goes out the window.

An example of the above was the roof trusses, simple in design are sloped and were to be seated facing the prevailing wind. I got a couple of chaps to lend a hand raising them and felt confident enough to pop out for a couple of hours only to find that when I got back they'd put them up the opposite way round…..i was just speechless...but we all know its no good losing your rag so we calmly went about spending the next 2 hours reversing the error.

I start this with some trepidation as since the forum upgrade me photos seem to post up the size of postage stamps.

    The Concept

The idea is was to basically put up a high roofed structure sloped to face the largely prevailing wind direction and a concrete base which will take the weight of a couple of pick ups and stand up to seeing me out of this world which means no Thai shitty hand mixed stuff.

The Pu yai had a few years back put in a raised concrete road which meant the gated entrance was effectively nearly a foot below the road leveland so if i didn't splash out and put in a deep base there would always be water and mud streaming on the car port during the wet season and in my experience concreted ramps or and steel alternatives never make satisfactory long lasting solutions so I was going to have to bite the bullet and splash the cash on more concrete.

    The basic requirements were therefore;

    1.A high roof > 3.5m.
    2.The base to be 8M x 9M.
3.A concrete base using ready mix which ensured the carport surface was level with the road.
4.Be able to be completed by me and help in less than 2 weeks.
5.Ready bought concrete uprights to keep things simple and save sometime.
6.A light galvanised steel roof to keep the steel costs down.
7.Try to stay within a 65K THB budget.

    The Build.

Things started so well, i landed, got to the place and the very same day secured the services of a Burmese chap who we know to help with some of the heavy lifting and shifting.

I was also was able to order the 8 concrete posts which are the standard 4M high ones with a stand on the bottom and they were 690THB I think,I also ordered standard Road Mesh to put on the bottom of the base which is 9M x 6M at something like 900THB and 10mm Rebar which sits with another mesh layer and provides the real strength.

The second day started with me feeling a bit jaded but I put this down to the flight and crunching a few Changs with some Som Tam and Moo Yang the night before. The bonus though as most there in Thailand at the time were aware, it was nice and cool....at the start......

The first job was mark out the post holes and dig them. They were c2M centres and 60cm deep by 50 square. Quite small in a way but they were being incorporated into the concrete base so would also be anchored further.

Mmmmm Ditch Digging...Ooohhh Lower End English…. It was Mr Sausages wet dream of a day, actually it took longer than a day as the ground was so hard it had to be watered.

The photo below is the uprights in place. To achieve this we dug the holes and added a concrete layer to even the hole heights and used the tried and trusted clear plastic pipe method of water finding its own level to get them trued up. The old methods still work.

So the uprights are done. I have to say they were heavy bastards and in hindsight I should have splashed for some extra help but just me and one other manhandled them into place and upright and christ didn't I know it the next day as I got out of bed and could barely straighten my back. This feeling your age was not improved by Yod the Burmese chap who I think is in his late 20s turning up bursting with the joys of the cold season in his woolly hat.

Next up was setting up the forms for the base. I considered buying board and knocking them up but was told you can hire the forms which we did at 3THB / Meter / Day which is good value IMHO.

So forms in place and some old blocks throw on the ground as some levelling hardcore and to raise the base mesh off the floor its time for the pour.

The truck….it turns out it was only one they had came with 5 CU Meters a time. I estimated we'd need 15 Cubes so three loads. Each CU Meter was 1,750 THB so all in it was over 26K THB or approaching 50% of the budget.

The next photo shows the start of the pour and the loads took so long to come + they were late starting I have no pics of the addition of the rebar or the final shot of it levelled. The guys you can see, one of them was walking around in the concrete sans shoes so his feet and legs must be like elephant hide.

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-carport-2-jpg

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-carport-3-jpg

The last load was so late I ended up leveling in the dark….not a happy bunny and I hadn't appreciated the Yod had disconnected the only working light so we were in the dark literally, we got a few Motorcys lined up with high beam on and me and Yod floating.

The outcome was less than perfect but by this time the lurgey had taken hold of me and I was past caring...tiz only a car port after all.

The cold light of day the next morning revealed that any perfect pour had been undermined by Meaow Astair ….and so the the inquest began….

    The Inquest

Apologies for the picture quality, night time, cats not staying still and Chang fuelled Lurgey didn't help.

The suspects were identified and captured conspiring

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-culpre-jpg

They were questioned one at a time, shifty fookers all

Firstly and naturally the Ginger one, shiftiest of the lot with a dodgy looking suit on

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-cat1-jpg

Next the other one with dodgy attire...and fay look about him

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-cat2-jpg

having questioned the first to and found they had sound alibis focus turned to the innocent looking one with no dodgy clothing and straight away suspicions were aroused... those feet were white yesterday....

by Gods sir we have him i tell you...half rations for a week and no prawn heads for you laddie.

    Back to the Build

So i'm full of some bug, me car port floor has an ever lasting reminder of the some cat dance moves on it and i'm trying to work out what to do about it.

Well I decided there isn't much you can do but take it on the chin. My solution, although I ran out of time, energy and enthusiasm is to grind the paw prints flat and fill them with coloured acrylic and so we'll have an everlasting reminder of Ghosts dance moves.

There followed a few days where we had to wait for the roof steel to be delivered and I for one was grateful coz I felt like shit.

For 5 days I watered down the slab 4-5 times daily.

I decided that i'd grind out concrete fracture lines into the slab just to make sure if it cracked then it would do so in an orderly manner and not add to my slab angst.

Now I don't have a large i.e > 335mm grinder handy to cut the slab deep enough (supposed to go down ¼ the depth) but I did have a chop saw used to cut up steel lengths, the ones on a sprung base so improvisation was required so I liberated the saw from its chassis and bought and put on a 250mm diamond blade...the photo below shows the jerry rigged cutter..

An idea of the slab depth

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-does-measure-up-jpg

A lot of dust and not helpful to my condition but it worked.

    Ladies Playing with Balls

During the wait for the delivery we popped round to a Chinese family we know and whilst I chugged Chang

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-waiting-balls-jpg

and used Googun with varying degrees of success to communicate

The girls got excited playing with balls which i declined to participate in as i'm not a ball bloke ...like Buttfly

but they seemed to be enjoying themselves

They take a lot of effort, are sweet and don't taste of much but it keeps the locals happy and i am left to my own devices chugging beer and contemplating cats.....and recovering for the final push.

    The last lap.

So semi recovered the steel arrives and its hands to the pump priming it all.

I used 3 ½ inch for the main beams, square section not the cheaper C section. In all about just shy of 10K THB and a swimming head from the thinners used on the primer. I was quite euphoric for a while until the headache set in.

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-steel-jpg

Next we jerry rigged some scaffolding to work from, with the welder located to work from.

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-improvised-scaffolding-jpg

and then after one aborted attempt to get the main trusses located on the load plates and welded in place they were up.

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-up-goes-jpg

Now the lengths are 6M which leave a problem when the spans are 9M so I had to butt weld them together and then use flat bar and weld that on top and bottom for added strength. I've not welded in c10 years and it comes back.

I first asked Yod to show me his welding and in true fashion there was no grind back to bare metal just keep jabbing the rod on the primed surface until it starts. I told him to follow my lead and if he doesn't then his work is finished with me...he got it and also ground back the welds to tidy them and re-prime.

    Finally

The remainder of the trusses are finished, with cross members and bracing...sorry but just a load of random pics with the roof sheets in place.

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-final-roof-2-jpg

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-joining-lengths-jpg

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-final-roof4-jpg

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-final-roof-5-jpg

The Holiday Car Port Build with balls and cats-final-roof-3-jpg

The sheet for the roof is galvanised and we paid to get them to put a bend and drop of 90cm on one end. The cost was 108THB / meter for 0.47 gauge. In all the sheeting was about 12,500 THB

So folks not the best build piccy thread and apologies, i'll have to take lessons from ThaiDhupp.

The rough order breakdown for the build is as follows

    5.6K Posts
    26.5K Concrete
    10.0K Steel
    12.5K Roof Sheet
    9.0K Labour
6.6K mIsc inc sand, cement, stone, forms etc

so all in c 70K THB and over budget but then what the hell do i know, i hadn't priced it up so was reasonably pleased to come in about 5K THB over budget.

Still some grinding and painting to do and cat paws to fill

    That's all folks.

Can never go wrong with too many cats on the property, Sid.
Add geese and you'll be complete.

    Splendid building thread!!

Well done what I see so far looks good and very solid.
Have you got any pictures taken from the road showing the whole carport?
Would be nice to see the thing in its entirety.

Ootai, thanks it should do the job. Unfortunately i don't have the Money Shot and may update next time...i need to change the gate to roller gate instead of swing and so may do an update. I have tested it and it takes the two pick ups as spec'd.

Looks good! I like to do stuff myself if possible and have rudimentary welding skills. I just avoid any heavy lifting these days after a hernia a couple of years ago.

And as for the cat pawprints... they add character. It makes a change from the usual doggy prints!

Nice, considering an extension to our carport to provide an outdoor entertainment area, couple of worthwhile ideas here NPT.

Mendip i'm not really pissed at the cat, once the prints are finished in yellow, blue, green and red as i plan they should raise a smile.

BiP thanks, i don't thinl you are referring to floating the concrete by Motorcy Headlights.

This is my kind of thread. I'm a bit of an expert on building luxury car ports in Thailand, have made a couple of excellent ones (alas, one blew away during high winds).

Very good pictures, reminds me of many of the reasons I don't wanna live in Thailand!

Everyone loves a picture thread, everyone loves a construction thread...

    Or...not...

It's not a bad car port, I'll give it 7/10 for a Thai outdoor structure.

But, does the moneyshot beat this beauty?

I think it does the job Betts and that's really all thats required. I wanted mine high so it kept the roof high enough not to radiate the heat down. Time will tell, as will the first high winds......

Might consider differently the material you're using for roofing in regards to radiating and absorbing heat.

well as the roof is silver, well ventilated and is up to 3M above the car roof i reckon its good, of course i may have created the largest sail in the village and i'm sure when it sails someone will be grateful of the material.

The metal sheets reflect the sunshine very well, almost no radiation comes downwards (in contrast to the roofing as shown above #19, even if in 6m height).

I assume that at the metal sheets the temperature cannot much differ whether the roof is 6 or 3m high, perhaps just better airing at the high one.

The high roof will cause certain problems at springtime rains when the water doesn't drop vertically but horizontally.
