Chimneys; does any one know any thing about them?

we have a wooden Lana recycled wooden house.
    Mostly teak.

    we have a chimney.

    It scares me shitless.

When we first checked he house out we loved it but the chimney, which had a small wood fire burning in the grate frightened me.

Apparently we need to line the chimney to make it safe.

Loads of of info in the tinternet but no local knowledge.

I'd love to install a small wood burning stove and line the chimney to make it safe.

I've found nobody who can do the job or advise.

If any of you good folk can come up with some suggestions, ideas or people to do the job, I will be forever grateful.

    Brick chimney ?
If so, get a steel wood stove (with a glass door so you can gaze at the fire) and put steel flue pipes up the chimney.
Have one or two flues inside the outer flue inside the chimney to avoid worry.
If you can, feed the air into the firebox using a feed tube bringing air in from outside.
That way you don’t create draughts bringing in air from outside and you don’t feed warmed air into the fire. Put a valve into the feed tube to control the fire if it doesn’t have a similar internal control. Maybe put a damper valve into the flue for ultimate fire and airflow control.

    Says who?

If your chimney is in good order with no leaks, i.e. no leaks of smoke into your upstairs rooms or your attic (or your neighbour's house, in the case of a semi-detached property), then the answer is no, you do not need to line your chimney - nor is there anything in Building Regulations which states that you must.

Maybe you can get all misty-eyed over wood chopping, ash removal and flue cleaning.
Flue fires from burning sappy green wood at low temperatures are a source of heart-string tugs too. ;-)

I rarely light the wood stove in my house because its passive solar design means it gets warm and stays warm in winter and keeps my tropical wife happy.

It’s good luck for a bride to kiss a chimney sweep at the wedding.
    Allegedly.
    Not proved by controlled tests.

I too try to avoid the cold, but visit a friend in Lake Tahoe Ca. Most every year. Can get damn cold and he has what you just described to a T..

When I was building the place I had stickybeaks shaking their heads at it.
‘Why do the walls weigh 70 tonnes ? Why is there so much insulation outside them ? Why are the windows double or triple glazed ? Why is one side all glass ? What’s that you’re smoking ?’

    But now they get it.
And in the summer it’s cool ....

    This what you describe
a feed tube bringing air in from outside.
That way you don’t create draughts bringing in air from outside and you don’t feed warmed air into the fire.
...is good for a modern fireplace in a cool country when you care about cool draught from outside. This will not be the case in Thailand, even not in very cool days in the North.

I am having a simple fireplace with a brick chimney implemented in the wall (not a wooden one) igniting a fire during cooler evenings in winter months Nov - Feb, more or less for a good feeling, not really to get warm, sometimes BBQing also something.
