    The Shortest Ever Thread

    How do I make a cement/concrete base ?

I hope this will be the shortest Thread ever .
    One question .
One simple and clear answer .
    And one " Thank You " .

At the side of Missy's home there is a soil patch about 4m wide and 15m long . Well trodden for maybe a thousand years .
She's going back to Thailand for a while and she would like a flat concrete base there . Strong enough to stand a tractor on . Or maybe much later a single story Storage/Workshop/Spare Bedroom . Not a lot of weight.

I've been reading some of the construction tales -- fascinating again -- but there are lots of pictures of holes and rebar and posts being prepared but I don't see a straight flat concrete flat outdoor base flat .... in any detail .

    Went onto Youtube .
This guy looked very good . Nice video clearing a space - pulling out a tree stump - spreading gravel - putting planks around the edge - putting down a damp whatever sheet - steel meshy stuff lifted 2 inches off the ground and then a concrete pour and levelling. It all looked perfectly good to me .
Then I read the comments and the guy got absolutely SLAMMED !!!!!!!
Time after time he was just slaughtered .

SO ....... do we have to go down a certain depth ? Then what ? Hard fill ? Mesh ? Concrete pour ?
Using my own thinking that should just about be fine . Do I need a damp whatever .... in Thailand ? I suppose I do .

If you can be bothered with this question , please can you just give me the 4 or 5 straightforward steps such that it doesn't immediately get a TORRENT of abuse like the poor Yankee received ?

    A straight easy question. DONE
    A simple brilliant 5-step answer .
    A thank you .
And no-one needing to come back and write abuse.

With the walls and the roof you will need to reinforce the outta edges more than the inner slab. Just get yer local builder to do it. He'll know.

WASP is taking the piss BTW.

I don't believe you actually need a gravel base but you do need to compact the ground on which you are going to pour the concrete.
If in future you want to drive heavier equipment on it then I would go for 6 inch thick concrete. The reason for this is that so far I have not seen Thai's use decent steel reinforcing in the concrete they just use mesh and quite often it is not really lifted off the soil into the concrete so 150mm (6 inches) as opposed to the 100mm pseudolus recommended above.
Ask for floor concrete when you/Missy order it from CPac or whoever you get it from, that should be 25MPa concrete which is stronger than the stuff they use on house floors and walls etc.

All my paths around the house, the shed floors and the extension at the back of the house I have done this way and they have not cracked or anything so far.

Best simple answer I can give.
    Cheers

If it just going to be a car etc ... minimal footings but if it's going to be inhabited then consider that more.

What surface are you laying a slab over?

If it's undisturbed soil ... minimal footings.

Footings don't have to be fancy ... just solid.

100mm thick with some rero should be sweet.

    This is pretty good ...

Don't forget to 'water' your slab to slow the curing but increasing it's strength.

Well I'm not going to do it in 3 Posts because this is Number 11 already .
Is there not much going on then ?

Anyway ..... I have two good videos . One is building a base for his Shitt ( ?? ) . But the video was fine . ALTHOUGH --- he did pretty much what the Yankee did and the Yankee got mercilessly howled down .
    Looked fine to me .

You haven't asked what slump concrete you need to order. I'll give you some help on that. CPAC should know but... Your Thai builder will not know and put as much water in as possible to make his life easier but your concrete strength shit. https://www.google.com/search?q=what...hrome&ie=UTF-8

And I'm sure when WASP started it he knew it wouldn't be straight forward as nothing is on this forum. I say it'll reach 100 posts. 84 to go.

12 metres changes the equation. Some decent rero needed to hold it together and to make it floats like a raft.

Just ask the village chaang pun to do it for a lump sum (mau) - he will know how to do it - and you have a rest. Come again in 2 days and you can dance on it.

How many bodies are going under it? Important question because it can cause subsidence once they decompose. If you are smart put an irrigation system linking the bodies that will fill any gap with plaster or concrete. It's called the fiorelli technique as displayed at Pompeii.
