Thread: Toilet replacement.

I am going to attempt replacing the toilet unit in my house in Chiang mai .We bought a new one ,which is all one unit (flush bowl connected to pan ) .Will i need a wax ring (it drains out the floor not to the wall ) .If so are wax rings available here ? I live near a Homepro ,and several Thai hardware shops.
Another Q.if i have to drill new bolt holes through the tiles ,for anchor bolts ,is there a special drill bit for tiles that i should use ?

You can probably buy wax rings at Homepro. My handyman uses HomeMart so buys them there.

Don't know a thing about drilling tiles.

Ive never seen them use a/the wax ring - they just use a cement mix and bolt it down.

The Chang's will know what to do, unless you are doing it yourself?

Its all one unit .No separate tank .

The one i am about to replace is not bolted down but seems to be cemented down ,on the outside at least .I have not explored further yet .

Can i use silicone or similar instead of wax ? Where the waste exits the floor ?
My local Homepro has a plastic ring connection instead of wax but its B730 .I will also look at Home mart .

The wax ring conforms to the contour of the ring on the underside of the base of the toilet preventing sewer gas from permeating out of the pipe. I would use one if available but that's just me. I had a hard time finding one in Laos but did eventually. That was years ago though. They may be up to speed these days.

It's less of a mess than calk. I have seen the cement option but upon replacing the toilet I had with new I used the wax ring. Good luck with the project whatever you choose.

There are plastic/rubber seals available now...Much better than the old wax seals...

If you are not an experienced plumber, be prepared for the worst. Thai plumbing is a joke. They are bad about not connecting...just aimming. The first toilet I pulled here, the 3" pipe didn't come up to the floor. It was 6" away and the sewage just aimed for the pipe.

Yes but at a price .Homepro have them for B730 .We already have paid B3000 for the toilet unit ,plus B100 delivery and are trying to keep further costs down by doing it myself .(hopefully ).Time is something i have plenty of at the moment ;-)

Bro, honestly, I think it costs like 500b to pay a somchai to replace the toilet.

Pay it and let them get on with it, wax ring or not. Several toilets here and no stink what so ever. It wont stink. You can see the bolt holes here and no wax ring was used. Its just how they do it, unless you get some sort of pro.

I would just pay to have it replaced and let them get on with it.

Also, fyi, the hole for the toilet should be 20cm from the wall, or more. Centerline of the hole in the floor to the back of the toilet tank = 20 cm or a bit more. Thats pretty standard for most toilets. If its less than that, then you'll have to bust up tile & cement to get it in the right area. The labor here is so fuckin cheap it makes no sense to try and fiddle with that yourself. You already bought the expensive bits.

That's ridiculous...I just paid $6 for one here in Florida...So about 200 bhat...

Home pro sell high quality masonry drills in the Bosch brand, they have different types including one suitable for drilling thru wall and floor tiles

Anything imported can be a stupid price here in Thailand .I got the simple wax ring at one of the better Thai hardwares here today and that was B350 .I bet far cheaper in the US .

Yes but i am fairly handy (or used to be ) and its a kind of challenge to do it myself .

Did you get that bowl installed? Most I see and I have seen a lot are just cemented down. Not the ideal way but that is what most do here. Yes and I have also seen many sewer pipes to close to the wall and most of the waste finds it way down the pipe but some is left under the bowl. Not good......

I kept putting it off but tried to install IT yesterday .I put on the wax ring .Everything looked fine ,but then when i flushed the cistern water was coming out on the floor from the back of the unit .The water hose connections are not leaking .
So i took out the unit again ,and i observed that the exit spout of the toilet bowl is about 5 mm up from the level of the floor ,ie,if you put a straight edge across the bottom of the toilet bowl resting on its side ,the crematic bowl exit is 5mm above the level of the bowl sides .The old toilet spout was flush .Anyway there is a Mr.Sumchai coming later today to have a look.
The sewer hole in the floor is flush with the tiles .I am thinking that Somchai will have to put a mound of cement around the hole .Exciting stuff lol

That's why they use cement

Doesn't have to be level & straight.

you need to stack two wax rings in order to get the seal. No you can not reuse the old wax ring.
