    Trade Questions

I humbly apologise if this has been done before but TDorians could admit to their main areas of expertise and fellow TDorians would know where to go for technical advice. I will kick off the can. My areas are commercial and domestic refrigeration design and service. My expertise in airconditioning has been restricted mainly to large commercial systems.
I should declare that I do have a small refrig a/c wholesale business in bangkok and we do sell aircon but my advise is meant to be strictly technical as an aid to TDorians. (not to generate sales). I'm sure if this is not suitable for TD someone will let me know.

I can service and reapir most DJ gear - mixers, consoles, turntables, speakers/crossovers, amps, 4 channel lighting systems and controllers, lighting banks/screens, truss/bar mounted intelligent lighting (older systems)

Although siince then a lot of stuff has gone too hi-tech for me.

I have a phobia about strobes as I once got a nasty shock off a capacitor.

I was the repairs bloke at a DJ store in the early to late 90s.

I build bespoke armoured vehicles, if anyone needs advice on their possible future purchase I'll be happy to answer.

Right then, I got a question for you.

How the fruck do I take off those 'energy saving stickers' that are on damn near every electrical appliance these days?

They're fruckin' unsightly and trying to remove them is a job from hell. They only come off one atom-sized bit at a time and must take what looks like months of picking and peeling to fully remove.

    What's your technique if any?

Buy an old Norge. Built like a tank.
Who needs an armored personele carrier when you've got a Norge.

Sorry, I couldn't help it. I had a flashback to an SNL skit featuring ass crack of the bicycle repair man.

Oops that was two different themes of old skits. I'm one of the booze brothers, who am I?

For this kind of thing I use a hot air paint stripper. It looks like a hair dryer but is much hotter. Move it around a fair bit over the sticker for about 30 seconds so that you're not actually burning the paint. This softens the sticky backing and it will peel off easily.

If you don't have one of these, you could achieve exactly the same thing with a fan heater.

Possibly also a hair dryer, but you'd have to persevere as they don't get so hot. (You'd have to hold it close, but at an angle, because if you hold it close and straight on the surface, it will cut out due to it's heat overload switch kicking in. There would be not enough chance for the hot air to escape, so hold it at an angle).

Once the sticker is off, there will be sticky stuff on the surface. Clean off with a rag and mineral turpentine, eucalyptus oil, or buy some special stuff specifically for cleaning off residue from stickers. Turps is easiest to obtain.

If anything like discoloration remains after that (it does sometimes), use some extra-cut car polish.

My major expertise has been in servicing local lassses until my licence lapsed,

I now do in depth research into bottles tankards and flasks, this combined with a keen interest in somtam and curry has enabled to become a major gas producer not that I wish to tout for freelance gas flipping.

May I add that when Sophia and Luigu-u-Like are tied up there's a numby called BoldPisser (new numpty =numby), knock three times and ask for Aunty

I like to spit on it before I rub one off.

I'm talking about the stickers silly.

Thanks LD, was thinking of that. Cyrille suggested trying alcohol, so next time I'll combine the 2 methods and try the hair-dryer when I'm pissed.

What I have used before is a steam iron on max temp max steam. Try that first and let me know. I used this technique to get rid of a wallpaper border around my wall so I could repaint. It had been there for 20 years and was a mongrel to remove but it worked. A hand steamer would be good but you are more likely to have an iron handy. Better still when you buy a new appliance tell them to remove stickers first!

So I'm sitting on the crapper doing my day off duties as well as checking the TD news and the gf says from a distant room above" baw a beeta do a batta petea brada how." I repeat the same and she says yes. And I'm thinking no, I didn't plan on going to my brothers house today? Kohls maybe.

Norge used to be a brand of fridge available in Australia in the 50s and 60s. Well made and lasted. went the way of many brands here such as limburg foster, silent knight, snow queen, colda and many more that are now extinct.

Even I could do that. Plus strip down anything electrical.

Putting them back together again however, is a different story. Usually left with a couple of screws and little plastic bits.

If you can tell me the following I may be able to tell you if it is worth fixing.
Is it a frost free model with a fan?
Is it a single 2 door or side by side?
    is the motor running?
is the freezer or cold section or both affected?
Does it have a readout panel and what is showing on it?
    Is there any ice?
