    House build progress pictures

Well TD'ers its been awhile since I posted Construction pics on TD. I took a break for my own personal reasons and decided to rejoin the forum and see how it goes.

My wife and I moved back here to Thailand in March a few weeks after our cargo container set sail and she completed her US citizenship test. I have a lot of info for people considering a cargo container from the US to Thailand. Different thread maybe.

Anyway helluva a lot has happened in the last 6 months (3 months before we left and 3 months after we got here)

So I ended up not retiring and am working in Thailand for a US company. It was a tough call but the position was very interesting and I was made (as us Sicilian's say) "An offer you can't refuse" Ok enough on that.

So I pushed out the start date of the new job as far as I could so my wife and I could land, tear down the old house out front and get the cargo container here and unpacked. we did it all and I had a week to spare.

Below are some pics of the carnage and the progress.

We landed and 3 days later and we had my FIL's friends there with their tractors trashing the place. Prior to the destruction we sold all the old Teak rafters and windows and doors. We recouped 27,000 baht.

We had both tractors swinging and winging clearing it out. Dump trucks in and out.

They started at 7am and this is how it looked in the early afternoon.

Cargo container. Big ass 40 footer stuffed from one end to the other. This arrived 1 week after we tore down the house in front and added the dirt. My BIl and SIL and their daughter talking to driver.

Moving forward one thing we did not consider was that after it was all leveled and 15 loads of clean dirt bought in that the trek from the gate to the house when all was dry was no problem, however we were quickly reminded that with a good rain it turned into an ugly mess. I told my wife we better get a driveway in here pronto or we are going to be hosting a mud bog contest on ESPN.

At the same time we decided we wanted an external car park area with my shop. We did not want all my stuff just sitting under the house open and working on my motorcycles and truck was going to be challenging and noisy. So again we contacted my FIL's long time family friend. I took over a good bottle of Glenfiddich (Scotch) and we had dinner and struck the deal. All these guys are construction house builders. Being family friends they decided to help us and get it done before the rice planting season starts. I drew up some plans and off we went. Now like all projects they start off being something quick but after I sat with my wife and Tanarat I decided to make it better and not looking like a shack out front the house.

So off they went. This is pretty far in, slab is poured and rough beams being installed.

Zipping right along. The driveway was on hold until the car park shop area heavy stuff was complete as there were delivery trucks and cement trucks still coming.

Looking across the car park area to the shop area. I will have a sliding glass door to the shop area and another exiting the back. Again this could be my living quarters if the wife kicks me the hell out.....I planned it that way.

While they were building the car park area my wife and I built this nice retaining wall and added the matching facia stones like the posts. Took us about 4 days.

Fast forward a bit, we had the driveway poured. I insisted on 5" thick with rebar and raised box wire. They did exactly that. Day after we had the Sod laid.

Rather then have a standard old cement driveway my wife and I opted for a patterned colored install. They did a really nice job for the price albeit there were a few things that I said HMM. But only I noticed it so it is what it is.

Pic of driveway poured and car park and shop nearing completion. Electrician comes Monday to add outlets and lighting all over the place. Painter comes Wednesday. We opted to paint match to house. We used same premier ceramic tile on the roof to match the main house as well. I did not want to have some roofing material that would fade and look bad. My wife is project managing all of this while I am at work. She is picky as hell and I like that. We discuss every night

I have a ton more pics of it but this was a quick recap.

    Few more pictures

Few more as I dug through the my phone

I added a wall in between to have one side auto stuff, the other side yard things.

    Rendering done

Back side of shop. The roof is extended as this is the side with the afternoon sun and sunset. I am looking at putting some solar panels up here to support power to run the lights

We added the synthetic wood look a like with wood grain and will paint this dark brown. We chose to do this versus solid wall as we wanted some natural light in the car park then a big cement wall. With the roof overhand it will get natural light

Got my new Yamaha R3 warming up for a blitz up into the mountains for a little air time. Of course in the US I only had to dodge idiot drivers and occasional dog but here...well....

While in all my moto rides up north in Lampang to Tak area I have only seen 3 elephants on the roadside I see pics like this from our area and I am always on high alert.

Yeah Stroller. It was a tough call. We had numerous artistic styles of less size but in the end they would have looked pretty but not been functional. But I figure if I can get a small helicopter here I have a built in landing pad.

OK Waspy, I will dig up some more photos. We also did all power underground so we have no power lines across the property.

Thanks Norton, It was a last minute design change. original was straight cement then I did some research on reflection and heat dissipation and having a light color and a varying surface texture really deflects the heat. We will see. It's nice to walk across in bare feet and the cost was minimal for them to stamp the pattern and add the color.

Well hand it to the Cavs, they got under the warriors skin and got them out of their game. Green has a lot to go back and reassess about his behavior. While his big point game was big today, his game 5 was a huge let down to the Warriors and a distraction. Anyway on to the Giants and they look good

Some pictures going backwards to the start and to current

Since I know we are all picture folks I added some more

Well this how it looked in March. Flat, dirt and a big pile of rock.

Looking across the dust bowl at the house before all the work began.

First up was removing 3 cement power poles. We did not want power lines hanging across the property so we wanted the power laid underground. Interestingly note the power poles are somewhat govt controlled meaning they know where they and are located on some big print. We went and notified the city we are taking them out. Cost 50 baht. We then dug down and yanked them up and trenched across the yard from the wall to the house. We added 1 new pole out by the street by our gate.

The power was pulled down the power pole to this conduit and securely attached to the wall off the ground. This is hidden buy our hedges. Some may ask what happens if something goes wrong under the ground, no worries I did the wall process as a contingency plan and can always put a pole. They did a outstanding job pulling in the wire, it was not easy.

The car park area at ground level.

They did all with cement trucks. I am not fond of small batch runs. You lose consistency and the mix is not good. These guys also sprayed the cement with water as it cured a couple of times and my FIL did at night before he went to bed.

While they waited for the other cement to cure they stated on the outdoor kitchen. We put off in the back there for a few reasons.

They poured a slab to enter it and made space for my BBQ

I brought my BBQ from the US and about 2 weeks after the construction guys started the car park I did a Big BBQ for all of us. Few shrimp on the barbie. Also did some ribs.

The driveway pour. They did it in segments. I am glad they did. They have built in expansion gaps. The weird thing however is the walkway to the house. They did the rolling angle on the one side but not the other. When you see it all complete it looks funny. Again only I noticed it and I am not a guy who goes nuts about things like that, I just chuckled and wondered why. I showed my wife and she said...Hmmm and we went on our way. That's my truck out there pretending like it was working or something...It was more of a nuisance as I had to move frequently around the property

Again all cement trucks. No hand cement work. I also got a good laugh. Initially I was adamant on 5" thick, the guy agreed. However when they dug out the area it was varying in height. That was his workers not him. So my FIL went out and dug sections out showing them 5" and made a template and when they came back the next day he showed them and they dug it out more. Gotta love my FIL.

We had 4 AC units installed while the car park was being built. These guys did an outstanding job on the installation. The crew leader was a cool guy and spoke English and we talked before he even took a tool out. They plumbed everything straight, touched up the cement and cleaned up their mess. We will paint the white drain down tube as we paint the car park area so it all cleans up nice.

    OK that is current

Today they hustled and painted and did power

Inside car park area. The walls are all primered and power is pulled in

They painted up top in dark brown tomorrow to match paint scheme of the house.

Power locations. I wanted all of them up high. I have 3 more in the car park area for tools. we are using LED lights in all the areas.

My wife had time today and we had some red brick, she put it around the well tube and will make it look like an old country well and plant flowers around it.

I will try and keep this a bit up to date for Waspy. We still have a lot more to go. The hardest part for me is having to work and not be part of the construction while there. My wife and I talk every day and at night recap all the work.

    More as it develops

Few more update pics. Mostly finishing touches.

Car park painted and power in place.

For reasons of cost and not required, I had all power externally installed versus the house which is in the cement.

Paint on outside done and trimmed.

Installed a few solar lights and had the painter paint all the external piping to match the house. He did a really nice job. One thing about here in Thailand they have bright blue, yellow and white piping. But the nice thing is, it is paintable. Just have to prep it. We will see how it holds up

Good to see. Nice stamped concrete, good use of color too. INTERESTED if you ever post anything regarding your experience of shipping the container from US. Thanks
