We have a nice little river . Meandering around . Lovely .

Most afternoons I was jumping in there for a cooling off .
Didn't particularly notice that there were never any Thais in there .

Then again nobody had ever told me about the river snakes , the lice .... and the excrement that people 600 yards away pooed straight into the river.

^The mother river they say. I believe it had about 5000 different species of life in it at one time. Excluding the lice. I swam in it and was fine, others bath daily in it.

I went fishing with BIL and in no time he tied up a trot line and began setting it by swimming across the river.

Other guys fished with gill nets. I have seen the two man crew paddle up river with the lead man throwing the circular net and then jumping in to collect the catch.

That's the norm. I should do a fishing thread. I am probably the only guy that throws Rapala ect.

I told sister to go to town and get me a kilo of shrimp. Thought I was buying her dinner. Silly I took them to the river as bait. They must think I'm a nut, well they know it by now.

Where I live we troll for Salmon. The wife pilots the fishlocker. Heavy gear, Penn and Daiwa. I have brought the same to Laos for the big cats ect. The Shimano light tackle is a hit as it gets more action. I'd be there now if not for her travel docs taking forever. Stupid gov, turned in the old one with the new app and they want a 25 year old court document. Mabey by June. Ffffffffff. Happy Holidays.

This is not the thread for it but I will say that when the customs guy (the x ray operator) at VTE saw all the gear we had he pinched 50usd off the misses. When I asked what that was all about she said he said we have some things that we should not have. Just the squeeze I figure.
    Go fish.

I had shipped a box of gear prior to the last trip. Loads of line ect. Now grandma said I need to bring more fishing line because "the mice" have gotten into the box of line. Thats a good one. One of those "mice" has pretty good English skill. Fishing? Fishing Ok?

Why not try Crickets as bait ?, far cheaper and absolutely deadly for the smaller species , which to them must look like a small shrimp

The Handbags parents need to get a new roof fitted after 40 years.

She tells me the " Mice " have eaten it.

    They get around those mice.

In a pond or lake crickets are a good bet. Still water on a bobber is a day at the park. I love it. I do not "knrow" the river, so for big cats it was chicken liver and or shrimp. What I really need is a fish locator, no not somechai, to get to the "scary water". Or pee water, ha ha, north of the (Mun?) River where the depths are great as the channel narrows. They tell me it is dangerous. I'm gonna need a bigger boat, Brodie. It's a Jaws thing.

The creek behind our, their, place is a breeding ground for what looked to me like bullheads, by the hundreds per my own eyes.

The gooch lies in the depths. No silly not your bag sack.

There is a Thai park in that area I've got to explore. Old stuff . Sucks to be stuck here. I'm one bad day away from pitching it all. More, more, more. Silly unless you have none.

I have had the fortune in my youth to fish Lake Lucerne in northern Wisconsin. I could see the bottom at twenty five feet. All together different from the Fox, Wolf, or Wisconsin river system. All are phenomenal as pollution is a past problem. I only wish I could say the same for the Mekong.

My mom used to say" If wishes were horses then beggars would ride."

Plenty of wire trace to be had in most shops here ,they even sell the clips which you squeeze with a pair of grips to crimp the hook on and a loop at the other end to tie to your line to, I used to use the steel wire trace to catch Pacu which look just like a piranha and have quite big teeth too .

Never invest more money than you can afford to loose anywhere in Thailand. I met a retired Danish Structural Engineer on the Koh Lam Ferry in Dec 2015. He had bought 2 condos in 2009 for 1 Milllion ThB each. He sold 1 recently for 2 Million ThB. He admitted he knows none of his Expat friends who made any money selling condos in Pattaya. I golfed in Dec 2015 with a retired Englishman. He bought a new Jomtien Condo for 2 Million ThB in 2006. He reckons it is worth about 1 million ThB today. I thought it was in quite nice shape. Had a nice pool & exercise room.

I have built a house with my eyes wide open that it is a present to the wife
If we split up I will walk away.its probably worth half of what I built it for anyway because I am a civil eng and I built it the same as I would in the UK.isaan design and build contractors are shit.plus I built it out of the way as I have always wanted to live in the country.its probably worth fuckall
The Thai property market is a minefield
Bkk would probably be a good investment but with the floods you could be burnt there

She divorced the guy that sprung her. He was a Laotian guy. Kinda a looser douche bag. Abusive and very controling. Too bad she didn't figure it out sooner. Of course they never ate a peck of salt together.

Like I said, good luck , one life to live and all.

A mate of mine from Perth has built a two bed room house outside Khon Khan (kalasin) for 700 K baht., on the wife's family land of course.

He drinks very little and is happy to just hang around. He says he will just walk if things go South but they have been together ten years now and all's good so far.

600 K baht is 24000 AUD. This is nothing. If I liked to quiet Issan life style I'd build one myself.

No chance in hell of that though, I'd go foking mad living in these small towns or villages.

I give it up though for the guys who adapt and thrive. Good luck to them.

Further more, after many trips and miles through Issaan I do realize how 30 K baht a month is enough to live quite well on.

Things are piss cheap up there in general.

Talking about fishing. 2 weeks ago we were in Chiang Rai and visited " The Beach ".

This is a cracking river that runs through the " Rai ". Lovely spot for a few beers, a feed, a swim and a nice spot of fishing . The Locals told us the fishing is real good here. Go check out " The Beach " if in the " Rai ".

Your right there Terry but I was like a fuckin madman in pattaya just couldn't leave the ale and women alone shagging and drink in was gonna kill me.
I built the house by her mother's village and I told her that when I get sick of listening to them all yapping and I want yo speak to a ferang I either get on my bike and piss off for a couple of days or sometimes I just ride the bike to the aiport and go to bkk or pattaya.
It's only 1500b then come home and nurse a hangover.
It's dirt cheep as you say and its great for the kids.
The village life is busy for Thais there's always party's and things going on I love it mate as long as you fuck off now and again and party it's great.
Couldn't do it without my bikes tho

    ^

Your approach to the upcountry life is exactly the way I approach my life in Bangkok.

I need the stimulation of the big city, if I wanted quiet I'd fuk off back to AUD and go South which will never happen mind you.

Regular trips around Thailand and twice a year back to Perth are the perfect partner.

Drinking ain't a problem though, my body refuses to do it on a regular basis thank fuk.

If I ever leave Bangkok could maybe give Chiang Mai a crack. Quite a large city now and perfect for touring out of.

Be careful on that bike mate, it's a gong show out there.

Nearly cleaned up a farang on the mae hong song loop who drifted into my lane.

    Dead man riding that one.

I know mate but no one leaves this earth alive and I love biking in Thailand it's not too bad up country I wouldn't do it in bkk
I am extra vigilante on the roads here but it's a great country and I've been to some amazing places when I have just ridden and got off the beaten track
The Thais are terrible drivers as you know but it's the luck of the draw mate I wear the best of gear and I can't live life worrying
My mother and father died at 40 life's too short

In June of 2015 we completed my (wife's) house in Sisaket Province about 40km from Sisaket City. It is a little more than 200 sq. meters. 3 bedroom and 2 1/2 bathrooms, plus a laundry and storage room.
The work was done mostly by local people supervised by my BIL who has construction experience.
Final cost (not including perimeter wall) was approximately 1.5 M thb.
It's a bit difficult and lonely since I don't speak the language, but I have my televisions and computer, and the villagers have all seemed to have accepted me, and are quite friendly. Also only 2km to 7/11.
