A massive, but worthwhile effort. I've never seen a Thai eating Pizza. I tried one in Udon Thani ... it was disgusting; another in Vientiane ... slightly better thin crust pizza. The problem is there isn't decent sausage & cheese in Thailand. I'm converting to Thai Food. Go with the flow ... so to speak. An Italian friend was setting up a Pizza Restaurant in Ban Dung ... but I split up with that Thai GF, so I don't know how that went.
I will let you know when I am over next ^ as its our local town .
I won't be eating pizza though , the Tillapia + bag full of salad eaten with NO rice for 120 bht suffices my eating needs most nights .
I wish the Italian guy in BD all the best , but I can't see that being sustained long there Issan folk aint gonna eat that and I doubt they're kids who might eat it will have the money ,, certainly aint enough farangs there
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs
I'd bet it would roast a fish in about 30 seconds....Originally Posted by nigelandjan
Great thread.
Might build myself one

With apologies to any pizza purists on here, laab pizza with a fair amount of chilli seems to be more popular amongst the locals than your average cheese 'n' tomato affair.Originally Posted by cdnski12
I agree that much of the local offerings are not really up to snuff, hence building the thing. My cheese fixes are now a large, almost ceremonial, event rather than something I sneak off and do in the Lotus Tesco car park.
There is actually a fairly decent pizza place in Vientiane that has its own wood fired oven - actually there are probably a few. It was a visit here that persuaded the missus that there was plausible method behind the madness that led to the pile of firebricks lying in the driveway.
Sensible choice, but I do find myself hankering after something with cheese on it after a while...Originally Posted by cdnski12
Thanks irlguy, good luck with your upcoming build BTW. I'd keep the pizza oven out of the negotiations until you're well on the way with building the house. As Humbert pointed out, the tendancy for builders to think its all too complicated and start dreaming of somtam instead is a real issue - it's probably a bit like I start dreaming of cheese...Originally Posted by irlguy
OK, as I'm here I thought I'd add the following pictures.
I was wandering around the local garden centre (yes, they do actually have them in the deserts of Dubai) and came across these sort of portable pizza oven affairs:
They are a bit more professional looking than the metal one I have here, but at AED 6,500 or so (Baht 65,000) they are not for the faint hearted. I doubt they are available in Thailand (yet) but I've seen them for sale in quite a few places here so it may only be a matter of time.
A bit more exploration and I stumbled upon this:
Now we're talking...
Actually on closer inspection you can see that, like much of what's built in Dubai, it's a bit dressed up to look like something more authentic than it actually is.
The inside, rather than being made of brick, is fairly small and made of pre-formed concrete:
There is then clearly some insulation, as the outside of the thing is far bigger than the oven, after which a brick exterior has been cemented on to give it that authentic look:
Though I hesitate to say it myself, the quality of the brickwork seems a bit haphazard, but the real shocker on the things was this:
That's a shade under Baht 400,000.00 - and it didn't include the two stone chickens.
Some people here have more money than sense.
Far better value I thought was this 4 metre tall fibreglass mountain gorilla garden chair, a snip at AED 22,750 (Baht 225K or so):
I was almost tempted, but the idea is you sit on the gorilla's hand which I found slightly disturbing as there would always be this sneaking worry that the thing might start to get frisky. I mean, look at the size of it, how on earth would you stop him if he did...?
The Pizzas at the Farang restaurant in Seka are pretty good, certainly worth a try. The restaurant also serves a wide range of interesting dishes.
I buy bags of frozen grated mozzarella from Makro along with packs of 4 frozen pizza bases and cook the concoction up in a 1k baht glass oven - it allows me to cheese the pizza up to my hearts desireOriginally Posted by Roobarb
but , your oven is magnificent
An excellent Pizza/Pasta eatery opened in ChoHo ( in Korat ) .
Big proper brick pizza oven out on the terrace . Chilled German beers as well as Italian . And served brilliant pizzas , pastas and salads .
A gem of a place really .
We managed to eat there about 12 times before they gave up and closed down .
I can't cry over something like that but I came close .
PastalessWasp
I bought one for $99. Not very big though.
A $99 pizza should be HUGE !!!
I thought I had better post some picsOriginally Posted by baldrick
It is not just about eating pizza. Having a pizza oven creates a party where people can create their own pizza and drink a few beers and make another pizza, a few more beers and another pizza or maybe a calizone.
Lovely thread thank you for the effort sharing !
Wasp, there was an Italian just after Dangkwian, the pottery village, may be 500 meter after the village on the left, coming from Korat... Talking pre 2009 ! The oven was a mastercraft, i think done by an Italian specialist that came over...
Chez Andy in the centre of Korat, he built a similar by himself and a friend, after a year or so he fired it randomly only, but we had great pizzas and different good food done it there.
Monday,Tuesday, then it goes WTF !
i used to make my own pizza from scratch but these days take the easy way of buying a few tortilla bases, artfully spread some mozzarella around add the topping, bake it in my gas oven job done.
The next step is ringing up pizza co and get the thing delivered.
i should ring up the escort co as welll to have a bit of totty delivered with my lazy man pizza

There can’t be good living where there is not good drinking
We do the same. We also buy a bag of Best Foods Pizza sauce. Job done.Originally Posted by baldrick
Anyone who likes Mayonnaise, not the sweet Thai shit, should try the Best Foods one sold in a bag at Makro. They have a few variations but make sure it's this one.
