I agree with that. And for many people it's practical too. Not completely infallible but maybe the best thing that can reasonably be done. But for those who live alone or have no relatives around, it's not an option.

I would not underestimate a trail camera's ability to catch someone that is not local. In that case there would likely be a getaway vehicle. So when your camera goes off you get the police and your closest neighbor to have a look. Maybe your neighbor can write down a license plate #, let the air out of the tires, or something. And the police might arrive in time. I once heard about a thief who spent the time to take every circuit breaker out of the electrical panel in addition to all the other stuff he hauled off.

    There are many sound deterrents

    1) Do not get into a routine. Thieves love routines. They watch and see and know. Change it up frequently. Vacant houses or summer houses are very vulnerable.

    2) Don't show off or talk about your belongings or big trips you are planning.

    3) Put lights on timers.

    4) Get to know your neighbors. I know here in the US most people that get robbed are from people living near them

There are so many other ways the list is huge and obvious to most. Cameras are just a supplement to some good ol common sense.

Last week I purchased an Arlo 4 cam system. Completely wireless. They use 4 small batteries and each camera is about the size of a half of a pack of cigarettes. I get email to my android each time motion is detected. The range to trigger is about 20 feet max as I tested and sensitivity can be set remotely for each camera. Remote motion on or off and I can real time view all 4 at once on my phone.

The system is connected to a wireless router. I have a basic (free) 1 terabyte cloud storage but you can buy more if you need to. I have the option with the free plan to add a fifth camera. They cost about 150 usd for a single. The 4 cam pack was just under 500usd.

The only disappointment is I cant get it to trigger through the sliding glass door or I could have covered part of the main livingroom and kitchen and deck with one cam. They share a common wall and each has sliding glass doors with an extra pain of glass next to each. I will get notification if anyone walk in the doors but not if their peeping through the glass. I can see the deck through the glass so would have to monitor via smart phone app all the time.

I could mount one outside as they are weather proof but the plan is to have another system for that.

The range of wireless allows for a cam in the detached garage and the clubhouse. Night vision is decent. Battery life they say is three to six months but that must be determined by how often they're triggered or you remotely watch them.

Pretty amazing technology if you have the cloud access as thier are no sd cards or phisical storage devise. But then they would steal that too I guess.

Another downside is no listening or talking. I plan to get the new doorbell that does that though.

I don't know what you have done since the post but I thought Id throw this out there. So now when I'm bored with TD at work I can snoop around the house. Overall pretty cool.

We installed a 8 camera set up. Like you has the android alerts. My wife uses it primarily to check on her Dad. He waves and my wife feels good. As you stated, pretty cool technology. I have sometimes watched it rain from Cam 1 when I am at work early in AM on my S5 tele which looks across the front of the property.

By this time they are already inside your property?

Closed curtains are a good way to stop people peeping in?

I just finished a temporary installation of three IP cameras, software used : iSpy. Temporary because before making hole in the walls I wanted to make sure that everything was working properly. The next challenge is now to find an add on for Kodi that allows me to check who is ringing the door or what the dog is up to without leaving my sofa when I watch a movie. Could someone suggest a good add on for that ?

By the way, does anybody know where to buy at reasonable price a gigabit PoE switch rackable 8 ports ?

If they break the glass they are in. Thats why I'm getting wired cameras for the outside. They have a better range. They will be up high and don't use batteries.

The arlo system has no wires at all. One screw on the domed shaped mount does it. Dont need to mount them. Put it on a shelf or it sticks to any metal serface. I stuck one on the fridge in the garage. Not to monitor my beer consumption but rather the door across from it.

The kit came with six wall mount domes and one peg style swivel presumably for outside.

Im still testing it out but so far I would say I'm happy with it. Aussies may like Swan products for afordability. Im thinking Axis for outside. Still reasuching.

I do plan to get the door bell motion cam with two way communication. That way when the church people come on Sunday morning I can explain that Im a Buddhist without getting out of bed.

I went with hardwired cams for the very reason you mentioned. They are mounted up underneath the eaves. They have far better range and visibility. The night vision on the set we have is very very good.

Once I move home I will seldom look at them and change the settings. For now they are working as I hoped they would. I do not worry about theft with my FIL living there.

^ Sounds good. What brand if you don't mind me asking.

I'm getting a system for monitering while away. May not stop a break in but should deter one.

The arlo is a neat gadget as it has no wires at all. Still looking into what's best for the outside.

Swan and Lorex seem to have bad reviews but they may be from the people that buy the cheepest systems. Seems they all sell entry level systems. The picture quality matters if you want to identify the visitor or perpetrator.

Would it be a good idea to put big signs around your property stating that there's 'CCTV cameras on site'?

Looking at the Thai TV news segments of Thais getting caught thieving, burglarising, shoplifting etc., a lot of them seem to have been oblivious of CCTV's capturing them. Some have actually noticed the cameras and got themselves captured on camera trying to disable them.

A camera with motion detection that alerts you to an intruder by email when you're out of the house is handier.

Even better if it can stream video or stills to you, so you can phone the old bill and give them pics of the villain.

And if you have two way audio, you can shout "You're nicked you arsehole!" at the villain and watch him panic.

This morning, I was looking out the window as I was brushing my teeth, I did not see any Koi swimming around down in the fishpond like I normally do. I didn't think too much about it at the time. Later, when I went out to feed them their "breakfast," the smaller ones didn't come right up to me like they usually do. In fact, no Koi in sight. This was very unusual. Never happened before. So I looked all around the fishpond and didn't see any Koi. I thought maybe they were hiding under the bridge/walkway for some strange reason, so I took a broom handle and poked it around underneath it. This would have scattered them like crazy, but nothing. It finally hit me: all the Koi are gone without a trace! Nothing else seems to be missing. Some tools are still there as is my bicycle. Stuff that would be easy to take. What is weird is that the Koi are just small fry, and my total investment was only 570 baht! So why would anyone risk getting caught for that?! We have security at the gate and a "moat" and fence surrounding the moo baan. I was home the entire time and there is a motion detector light for the deck. Unfortunately, no CCTV cameras yet, although the house has been pre-wired. I am totally puzzled, at least as to any reasonable explanation. Animals could not have gotten all 18. Dogs wouldn't and cats couldn't. Plus, the large area under the bridge/walkway is a great place for them to hide. Aside from the supernatural (pee!), I am completely at a loss.
Any amateur sleuths out there can solve this one?
