    Great job, Slimboyfat.
I'm assuming that the location is near your wife's family...though from the pics it didn't appear to be in "the village".
How far away is your Thai family ?

About 10 mins walk - if you dare to run the gauntlet with all the local dogs

Looking great mate I was just directed to this post from another helpful poster, I asked in another thread if anyone knew where I could buy inexpensive land close enough to bkk . Don't mean to hijack the thread but if you know anyone that's selling I'd be interested to hear at that price . Great bit of land

Yes I reckon you are right. It's on the list to sort out before rainy season.
Unless you wanna put in a rainwater tank, I'm not a believer in guttering in the tropics- when it rains heavily, it just overwhelms the guttering anyway. And having recently had to pay for repairs and painting for the guttering on our place down south, frankly I wish I hadn't bothered- we don't have guttering up here in Ubon, (except at the back to feed a rainwater tank), and really don't miss it. PVC is the best guttering material- but it's bluddy expensive.
Interesting opinion. Maybe will see how it goes when the rain starts then take it from there.
I put in "Singapore" style "guttering", so rain comes off the roof straight into a drain which is about 3 inches deep around the property aligned where the runoff from roof is, this feeds straight into the main drainage system.
Sure you know what I mean............

    Cheers.
That will be my retirement job for when we stay there permanently.
Now I'm still working full time in Singapore and most of the time my wife and daughter are with me.

Good looking little house but why do they still build with columns instead of filling the blocks with concrete and putting a ring beam at the top like Australia?
We dont fill all the blocks, the corners and some others I think.
The blocks in Thailand are good quality, is it just that they can't change the way they build?

My words. Always wondering why the columns ("sau")? Obviously, because a trditional bulding way in Thailand was always with (massive) teak saus. The more fat saus the more image in the village. All the others not so important (roof, walls).

And when the availability of the teak had rapidly diminished another material for the saus has quickly be found: cement (quite cheap in Thailand).

So easy and fast to build with double (cement) blocks (also quite cheap and available by the village maker). And the space in-between (some 3 cm) helps to keep the inside wall pretty cool.

Of course, in the corners and in the middle of a long wall the two blocks create a form for a full concrete column with reinforsement bars. And the ring beam above the walls with a steel profile embedded serves well for fixing the roof construction.

Such "sau-less" house can be finished within two months, unlike the "sau" house where just the saus need two months - and lot of wood, iron, bamboo sticks.

    Blockhead and Klondyke

I expect you are right - but I have no idea about construction techniques - I am just a simple seafarer.
All I know is that I am quite pleased with the results for the amount of money I have spent - It's a nice place to have our holidays when my wife wants to spend time with her family, and for the future there is la fair amount of space left on the property to do other bits and pieces of gardening etc so I have something to keep me occupied (apart from drinking) if and when the time comes to live there permanently.

Thank you SBF for sharing your story. You, along with many who have posted comments, have given me several points for thought before we build later this year. All the very best to you & your family.

Great house lah. Why so cheap?
Hope you can work out the retirement soon. I'm also a Singaporean wage slave, but the wife's land in Thailand is as yet unbuilt on.

Around 900k baht when I stopped counting, after all the major stuff was done. When is a house finished?
It is only inhabited for a couple of months in a year so we just do bits and pieces as and when we feel like it.

Hell of of a house for the price. Nicely done. Like the fence also to keep out the local riff raft or u after a night of drinking. Not sure about putting grass in the yard - I would think in that open space the sun would burn it up, regardless of how much water u put on it. But I’m no gardener and often kill indoor house plants without trying. Hope u get to take time off work to enjoy ur new digs.
