Thread: What do you think of this Thai house ?

A friend of mine posted this on Facebook yesterday.

This Guy Started With Nothing. What He Had Just 6 Weeks Later Made Me Ridiculously Jealous.







I personally think it is the wrong house for the tropics. It has no windows, so bugs and critters will get inside. That clay makes me think of an oven and I'm sure it gets warm inside. And those weird stairs going up to the gazebo ? I can see someone slipping and sliding right off the side of the place. That is assuming, you don't tumble off the gazebo first (no railings).
The bathroom is interesting however, although all they showed was the sink & shower, not the throne.

So, what do you think ?

My very first thought was ''Hobbits ''

it looks well made and well finished, the earth colours and setting are quite inviting.

with windows and protection from insects and weather, as a resort or beach bungalow it might work well.

it would make an interesting garden feature or daytime sala.

but as a full time home, no thanks.

I think it's not a house so much as it is a hippy art project. Bamboo faucets forsooth!

I wonder how someone named "Hajjar Gibran" comes to own a mango grove in Thailand that foreigners are free to build on?

Looking a little closer at the pics, I think I see windows in the openings. But I don't see any mechanism to open them !

I do like the idea of it being like a Sala, although I don't think it would fit in the design of our house.

Looks like a few of those big water tanks to me. It's not really my thing but I can imagine why people would love something like this.

You couldn't sleep in it unless under nets, it would always be full of critters and if it rained........

Be Ok if one had just had a nose full of wizz I suppose but with no A/C I'm not interested.

if they turned the pond into a paddling pool, and filled one of those pots with plastic balls, it would be a nice place to relax with the kids for a couple of hours

Will be great once the rains start. Build them high to keep them dry and catch the breeze

Well...I have to say that is one stupid house.
In a kids adventure playground it would be popular and appropriate .
Paint it white in December and park it in Big C for a Santa Grotto .

But as a real home it's infantile ridiculous and stupid.

There's no place like Dome.

Only minimal shading so there's a fair chance it's going to be a bit roasty-toasty this time of year. And whilst the thatch looks nice, replacing it every couple of years would get on my tits after a while. Still, it's interesting and different and looks fun. Well done to him for doing it.

There is a photo illustration in Robin Lane Fox's "Alexander the Great". Maybe you've read it.
It is a village at the foot of Khaiwak Pass thru the Hindu Kush.

Houses very similar domed on square base...
