Oh, no! Not another bloody housebuild thread!

Yes. This is yet another housebuild thread, but with a slight difference. Most other threads start with a picture of the land and progress, stage by stage, as the house is built.

This is similar to such great works of literature as "Anna Karenina" and "Great Expectations", that were serialised - over four years in the case of the former, and over a one year for the latter. Whereas "To Kill a Mocking Bird" and "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", were completed before their writers had found a publisher.

My house is now 99% complete. The remaining one per cent representing cleaning and tidying up now that the construction gang have left the site.

Over the next weeks or months you will see various photographs taken at the site. If you wish to make a comment (disparaging or otherwise) about any of the desgn or construction details feel free to do so. But it will be too late for me to do anything about it. But remember, if one day I find myself a guest in your own house, I am far too poilte a person to make any negative comments about the contents of your bookshelves or your CD collection - not even if there is a proliferation of ABBA and Jeffrey Archer.

Anyway, even though I had an uncle who claimed to have been responsible for the building of Basildon, I know nothing about the construction business at all. I also know next to nothing about posting photographs on this website, and you will , therefore, see nothing more from me for a few more days.

I believe that despite the enormous odds which exist, unflinching, unswerving, fierce intellectual determination, as citizens, to define the real truth of our lives and our societies is a crucial obligation which devolves upon us all. It is in fact mandatory.
If such a determinations is not embodied in our political vision we have no hope of restoring what is so nearly lost to us - the dignity of man.

Not off to a good start here , I wonder if he,s been trying to post a picture here since the blessing of the land at the bdginning ?

Quite feasable ,, others merely loose the will to live during the process

Yobbo ........ many many many folks is always delighted to see a new Building Thread .

So don't worry bout datt .

But on the subject of posting photos ........ a few days ago I posted the following bit of help before checking and seeing that my help was only about 10 months too late !!!

Never mind ............ but possibly OK for you ?

    Posting Photos .

..... I had this difficulty too and needed a step by step guide .

    So........

    1. Put your photo into Photobucket .

    2. Go to the Photobucket Library and find the photo you want to put into TD .

    3. Double Left-Click on that photo and it will come up as a big photo .

    3. Single Right-Click inside that large photo . It will give you several Options .
One of them is " Copy image URL " ............. Single Left-click on that .

    4. Now go to Teakdoor . You'll be writing some message so look at the top of the writing box for the little Postcard . It's got a mountain and a stamp on it .

    5. Single Left Click on that Postcard .
It will have " http:/ /" highlighted in blue . Press Delete so that goes away . And now press Ctrl V together . A string of text will apear where you previously had that http:// .

    6. Press OK ...... and that's it .

In your message you won't see a photo . You'll just see a line of text . It's the URL for your photo . But when you finish your message and SUBMIT you'll then see your message and the photo .

    Bettyboo taught me this .

Looking forward to your pictures .

Good stuff Yobbo, well done for taking the plunge and starting a thread. I'm looking forward to seeing the story unfold

Probably a sensible way to do things. Decorating tips from Betty, kitchen advice from Koman, ideas on finishing a project from Marmite or frankly any advice from me would be well worth avoiding.

... and if memory serves me correctly, amongst the characters in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' was a seldom seen fellow called 'Boo' and another chap called 'Dill'. Just mentioning it as you may need to be careful on the type of posters you could be attracting to your thread at the outset.

That aside I'm sure that, as your 'Chamber of Secrets' begins to unfold in the coming weeks, other more sensible types will join in the fun.

No worries, you're in great company here... Like the two novels you mentioned above, your introduction has the hallmarks this being the building equivalent of a 'coming of age' tale - a bildungsroman I think they're called (don't worry, it's not a suggestion that Wasp becomes involved in the final aesthetic detailing )

Best of luck with working out how the picture posting thing works. I use Photobucket and Wasp's instructions above should work if you go down that route. It's a bit painful to start with but it begins to make a sort of twisted logical sense after a while.

BTW - where are you (have you been) building?

Actually, when I use photobucket, all I do is go to my library and sub-folder of pics for our house. When you see all the pics, you will also like a little gear in the right corner of each picture. When you move your mouse over it, you will get a series of options, including "Get Links"

When you select "Get Links", you will get a little menu, including "IMG Codes". You just touch that long box under IMG codes and it copies both the image link and the IMG tags, so all you do is then paste it into your post and "voila" ! You will see the IMG tags and the link to your picture over on photobucket. Your image will then show up, the next time you do a preview. Very easy.

Of course, the OP needs to up his number of posts before he can post any pics.

Thank you all your comments so far. I have now succeeded in opening a Photobucket account and saving a selection of pictures that will be used for my introduction.
The house is in the Bandung district of Udorn Thani province.

If I am unable to to post pictures until I have made a certain number of posts, I shall have to start building up a 'post count'. I do solemnly promise, however, that I will try to refrain from telling you what I had for breakfast, how long I had to wait behind someone at an ATM, or lamenting the unavailability of flapjacks.

    Where are you, Boo Radley?

Well I for one would like to know how long you had to wait in line at the ATM.

Also there is no need to ask where the trouble makers are as they are lurking close by.

Remember I have the intelligence of a four year old Papua New Guinean ( They're very intelligent . )

Step by step for me and yobbo would be excellent . Anything quicker than my 6 steps will be most welcomed .

nigelandjan: Thank you for the kind offer, but at the moment I am sitting at home in a flat in Bangna, Bangkok. I will try to post pictures on this website when I have a an hour or so to spare - some time later this week. If I have any problems I will get someone from my office to show me what to do.

(Set yourself apart from the hoi polloi of building thread authors doing it that way, I reckon...)

A few pics of the manse in all its 99% complete architectural splendor say, followed by a succession (or would it be a recession?) of "before" photos of things like roofing, tiling and drainage, all leading back to a wide shot of the foetid acre of bog you decided to build on?

    Just a thought...

(However you decide to present it though, please spare no details when it comes to tiling and drainage. Folks 'round here love tiling and drainage...)

Just to bring this thread back to life - at least for a few minutes. I have now notched up ten posts, and ought to be able to post a picture. My first attempts at doing this have yet to be successful - so I shall wander down to the nearest hi-so shopping mall and ask the first pretty girl that I chance upon whether she would like to go to bed with me. I think I will have a greater chance of success in that quest than in posting pictures on this thread. But once we get the pictures up and running the thread will start at the beginning and finish at the end - with occasional flash-backs and flash-forwards. I might also occasionally become an unreliable narrator.

I do not see a picture, but, according to some instructions that I read in a language that bears some vague relationship to English, my first picture may already have appeared. The land on which the house has been built is roughly 60 by 20 yards in area. It is bounded on the west by the 'main' road, on the east by the 'back' lane, on the south by 'Soi Giraffe', and on the north the next door neighbour's house and plot. If the photograph appears, it is a view along Soi Giraffe with the undeveloped land to the right.

Yobbo, just as a thought: if you are using Internet Explorer then try using a different browser.

I use Firefox for TD, but when I forget and try to post pics on TD using Explorer then the wheels seem to fall off. I'm not sure what edition of Explorer I have.

You shouldn't use IE anyway, unless you want to get some Trojans or viruses. Firefox or Chrome are better options and are, in my opinion, more user friendly too.
