Thread: Wood for Kitchen Cabinets

So I'm looking at getting a new kitchen built, and have visited a couple of wood-working shops here in Chiang Mai to get some quotes. The most recent place recommended I use "Daeng Nam" wood to build my cabinets and doors. I hadn't heard of this wood before - anyone have any experience with it or use it in your home?

A cabinet maker friend of mine uses it and says it is very good. He uses several other types as well. All depends on the look a customer wants.

All I can say is that most of my firniture is made from it, not veneered. It neither warps, cracks or splits as per other furniture made in other woods.

It is great stuff. Just saying for cabinets, I've mostly seen it covered with a laminate. Would also work for cabinets.

My cabinets are made from Mai Daeng.

In my house all kitchen cabinets, furniture and ceiling are made of Rubberwood. I chose it 6 years ago because of its ecological background. The dark-stained wood looks a little bit like teak wood.

Meanwhile, I would no more recommend it.

The ecological background is questioned because of the chemicals used for making it termite resistant. I had also problems with mildew.

Rubberwood is very soft and vulnerably to scratches. It can work with cabinets doors but not for horizontal surfaces.

I meanwhile like more the natural yellow colour of the wood. The dark stain attracts mosquitos.

For my next house I wouldn't wood anymore or only as engineered plywood or MDF. For trims and decoration I am looking for bamboo.

Good post juehoe, you know your wood. I like rubberwood because it is sustainable but I didnt know about the chemicals.
Bamboo is the most sustainable wood, and I am a fan of MDF and plywood.

Not wood bamboo is a flowering perennial evergreen plant in the grass family.

bought solid wood from Home pro,beveled glass fronts pale wood maybe rose/cherry or..don't care..nice..easy to hang if ya have a level! Frickin hate boring Maple..! Keeping glass clean is a pain though!

MDF = Medium Density Fibre . So, not a wood.

I HATE the shit. Its also very bad for your health, whilst being worked on.

But can look rather nice when finished and sprayed.

Yeah, I think so.

Sandalwood might be another option for long lasting quality.

Though, a bit pricey - stands up to wear and critters.
Naturally beautiful for furniture and cabinetry.

Our entire house is teak inside and out, except for the concrete bits.

Mai Daeng is a lovely wood for cabinets. Has very nice graining. Finishes up beautifully and you can get large pieces. Rubber wood is usually joined to form large usable pieces and has no discernable grain. A quite common and utilitarian wood choice.

It's frequently a fast growing strain from plantations these days, so unlikely to attract the attention of the police.
