Rural Surin just SW of Ratanaburi

I tried starting this thread back when I joined Teak Door. Frustrated with posting pictures I postponed until I figured out how to do it without throwing my laptop across the room My wife and I decided to do this project after saving money and doing a considerable amount of planning, this was in 2004 (the house is now completed after a grueling 5 years) and we are still yet to be done. To give you an idea of what I started with I will start with the land. The house compound sits on a 3 rai 2 nan lot which when you follow along you will see why it took so long.

    Here we go:

Notice how low the land is? Well follow along and and watch the transformation, this is the backside of the Moo Ban .

The first job on order was to clear out one of the fish ponds and prepare it to be filled.
My wife has quite a bit of land so this one will not be missed, just behind the berm in the back is klong anyway

Just adjacent to our property on this side is a quiet little Wat. I kinda like it when I hear the kettle drums being sounded off in the daytime.

The small house you see on the left is where we lived for three years while the largest part of construction went down. The house to the right of it is one of my brother in laws house. This was vey convienient for various reasons. This house brings very bad memories becuase I was almost electrocuted to death due to shoddy wiring which I took to heart
    on the new house.

    Raising Cain

After draining out the pond it was now time to raise the land, most folks are dirt poor in my area so dirt comes cheap (fill for the land I mean). Most of the people you see working in the photos are all family and we are all farmers at this point in the project the only professionals are the ones who think they are

This picture is the first corner we started the retaining wall, they look small but you will get an idea in a few more pictures

The retaining wall is built as a cantilever system, as the weight of the earth sits on this concrete pad it stops the wall from tipping over.

This is Yem, the guy is a worker and his profession is a concrete guy in BKK. He was more than happy to stay home and work and make equivalent wages. Never had a complaint about this guy.

I'm not an engineer, but from looking at the way the wall is being built I don't think you will gain any strenght from the cantilever. If the shear force is enough it will just push the poles over.

I will show you more pictures later on the time frame. It has been 8 years ad the wall has no cracks in it and no leaning.

Yem the concrete guy laid a wire on each row of bicks, confident with his work and later on in the thread you will see what this guy is capable of. He is well known in these parts for his knowledge and quality.

If you look closely you will see where the rebar is sticking out of the columns, this is were we tied in the columns to the pad. This portion comes a little later.

Before I post more pictures I have a few things:

DD, I messed up on the title. Can you please correct Ratanaburi?

I did loose some of the build file photos so there will be gaps (but not too many), I also had to go make some cash at times too and one time my computer was stolen in Chenai

I also bought better cameras as time went by
