Roof extractor vents / fans ...... any good ?

The back of our terraced house looks like this and came as standard on all the houses in our village:

This outward extension gives us our interior kitchen. However, the roof space enclosed gets a lot of heat stored up and as there is nowhere for this hot air to escape it makes a strip of ceiling on the ground floor very hot and also upstairs, where the roof climbs halfway up the second floor walls, the heat comes through and makes the bathroom and back bedroom walls very warm to touch.

    Not good.

I was thinking of installing one of those big bulbous vent things that allow built up heat to escape. Obviously, they must work a bit or they would have died a death by now but I was wondering just how effective they are at disipating stored up hot air.

They are not expensive, about 1000 + baht so I'll go ahead anyway but I'd like to know in advance what kind of improvement I can expect.

I'm also planning to put in some insulation above the ceiling and possibly paint the ceiling a lighter shade to deflect the sun.

    Thanks in advance.

Just make sure tho with the insulation it is put right side up.I suggest putting it under the roof and also on top of the tiles or actual ceiling.
Roof vents do work for sure.Put exhaust fans in your kitchen as well.
My wife has all of this but still prefers to do most of the cooking in our "dirty kitchen" to avoid the heat buildup in our kitchen.

Blackgang did a thread on this
    Yes, they work.
You can get normal vents that match your roof tiles.

Why they use cement tiles in Thailand is beyond me. Most stupid bloody material to build with in the tropics.

I had four wind turbines put on the house the girlfriend was renting in Bangkok years ago and it made a Big difference.

Here in Khon Kaen I put some heavy (large R value) insulation above the ceiling tiles and it also works well. Home Pro sells the stuff. It’s about 4 inches thick (when rolled out) and is pink covered in some type of foil material.

O.k. Still can't figure how to do multi quotes so I'll just say thanks all for your quick responses.

MID hot air rises indeed. Too bad farts are not aware of this. Might save a lot of misery.

AT .... We do already have an electric extractor fan in the kitch which takes care of kitchen smells but sometimes the heat on the upstairs bathroom wall is enough to make the shower cubicle steam after a shower.

TY....yes....I looked through about 10 pages in the construction forum but then gave up ..... should have persevered.

Marmite ..... I guess its the cost factor that makes them do it. I can only say I once lived under a metal roof once ( sangasee ) which was worse . Sleeping at night was like doing time in a punishment cell of a Japanese POW camp.

I'll get one put in sometime soon before the hot season really arrives. Been quoted 1200 for a 14 inch one including fitting.

O.k....thanks for that. Music to my ears. Nothing worse than spending money on something only to get a paltry difference. I've already insulated the entire loft space and so o.k. on that score. As a quick fix we just keep the back bedroom door closed when its really hot so at least the front rooms stay cool.

Talking of cooling, time to get some Leo coolant from the shop

I'd go for the simple convection vents

They work under certain conditions, ie when the wind speed is faster than the friction the rotor arrangement requires to revolve. It cannot extract until the extermal fan is going at sufficient speed to provide the inner fan with enough power to overcome friction and generate negative pressure in the duct.

One more thing you should consider placing some soffit vents in the roof overhang (or eaves as some people call them) so that when the fan pulls the heat out it also replaces the hot air by the cooler air from the screened openings in the overhangs.

Thanks SL. Yes, I had already considered that and plan to put a couple in.

And Peter Pan.....thats worth considering too. The ones I see opposite our house hardly move sometimes and I figured this might be a problem I asked if a motorised one was made but so far have drawn a blank.

I can't find the exact one to match your tiles but something like this.
You just remove one tile and replace it with a vented one.

Well thanks a bundle for taking the time to search those up TY. To be honest, can't say I've seen any in the usual stores around here but I havn't looked that hard yet. Before I take the plunge with those metal carbunkles I'll have a look around and see if I can find anything similar and how much they cost.
They look a lot more estheticaly pleasing, thats for sure.

Please tell me what to ask for. When I tell the sales people at home pro and global house what I want, all I get is the Deer in the headlights look.

In America, mine were on a thermostat and came on automacally. I would check around for a company that sells and installs them. Good luck.

If you go to Home Pro or Global show them or say this word and they should be able to point you in the right direction.

It does, in many cases, once you have paid for the equipment

as said, those ventilators work on the principle of the hot air rising, which forces the fan to rotate, which thewn extracts the hot air

you need lower inlets for them to work properly, to get a good flow of air
    I have reported your post

Thanks for the link PP. As I said, after going through the first 10 pages of the construction forum I gave up. Theres a mine of information in there if you have the patience to look. ( Obviously, I didn't )
