What the hell is wrong with my Mac???

Processor 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Startup Disk Macintosh HD

I had about 64GB of free space when it happened. My 6 month old 15" MacBook Pro began to struggle one evening here on Koh Samui where I am escaping the floods. I had watched a few dvd's and imported some files from my camera. iPhoto and iTunes were both open as well as a few Safari pages and things were getting abnormally slow, every action had a delay followed by the spinning rainbow circle, the importing process froze and a couple of times I had to force quit by holding down the on/off switch.

I switched on again after letting it rest for a bit and ended up with just a blue screen and the mouse arrow. No toolbar, no dock. I powered off again and later I had the dock but it would come and go, the finder window was pen but everything was frozen. I took it to an authorized Apple retailer and they said they would need to backup everything, so I bought a 1TB hard drive with me and when I got the laptop back it was back to factory settings and about 40% of my data had been successfully saved, though they didn't re install iLife and all my iTunes and photos have gone, as well as FCP and a whole load of other apps I will ned to re-install or download when I return from my holiday.

I now have 732.82 GB available but everything is still disgracefully slow and sluggish for such a young machine with so much free space as if it is threatening to happen again. I do not feel confident enough to import the data that survived or use my laptop again for work until I know what is wrong, but it should be working perfectly and I should not be seeing the spinning rainbow circle (there must be a proper word for this!) but I am despite not overloading it, it should be able to multi task anyway! Safari is particularly slow yet I'm in a decent WIFI zone.

Any ideas what the issue is here and what to do next?

It should still be under warranty as I bought it in May.

I won't be buying flowers for Jobbo anytime soon.

Cheers, I've lost a lot of confidence in them. Perhaps it is true that SJ compromised quality over the past decade to mass produce to a level that would compete with Bill. In which case I'll chuck it in the sea and buy a PC.

See that pic of Jeremy Irons, took a good five minutes to get that up.

Any clicking noises from the hard drive? That might be failing slowly. Not too expensive to replace but you will need to reinstall after that.

You can also try verifying / repairing the disk in the Disk Utility, in case its corrupted. Might not be possible if the disk is actually failing.

I'll try a disk repair, worth a try, thanks. Have a green.

I'd try my solution first. That way you will definitely know the disk is failing.

I went into disk utility and it was all confusing, don't know what I'm doing - can anyone guide me? I turned it off for an hour, typing this post is a hassle in itself as it can't put the words on the screen as fast as I can type them, lots of delays with the fucking rainbow spinny thing.

I would say that if the OS has been re installed and everything is still running like shit then you almost certainly have a hardware issue. You are still under the 12 month warranty; I would go to one of the apple repair shops rather than a retailer and hassle them. If you are in bangkok I believe there are repair shops in siam discovery centre and there os defiantly one at fortune city.

Its worth going to some of the forums like Mac Rumors: Apple Mac iOS Rumors and News You Care About and theres this tool you can use from apple

harry barracuda, Thats a rather crude way to handle an apple. They should be shown the respect they deserve, like stuffing a biro though the middle of the screen

I think I'd go with a hot soldering iron for dramatic effect.

Have you turned on your Activity Monitor to see what applications might be doing a hog? I have a printer driver that sometimes goes into an odd mode stealing virtually all the processor resources. Unless you stop it, it goes on that way forever.

^That's not entirely fair. A few years ago I ended up costing up very similarly specked mac book pro's, toshes and thinkpads. The macs were about 100 pounds cheaper. Saying that what the toshes and think pads lacked in design athetics they more than made up with build quality.

I'm not in Bangkok at the moment and neither is my installation disc, i'll try a disk repair and then i'll just have to wait until I'm back.

I bought it from Emporium but the staff are thick as shit there and speak no English so Fortune Town is my best bet, but how can I prove it's still under warranty?
