(HaHa, I can see all the Teakdoor mods drooling over the Improved C&P Function)

Hey Arry, you know you said the Iphone is for people who don't understand technology

Then why is the word support mentioned 23 times in the upgrade to Gingerbread ?

The phone has 2.2 and a 16G internal and 16G external chip.
I cant seem to get it to tether to my macbook without using windows. I deleted the windows partition long ago. I really loathe windows. I cant be bothered to install it again..
I tell ya what the screen on this phone is really amazing. Superb quality.

Because unlike the iPhone, Vendors can choose whether or not they implement things like NFC, two cameras etc. So they can choose to offer a trimmed down smartphone at reasonable cost. Which is why Android is pissing all over iOS.

And the improved power management and application control is useful to anyone.

Stick to your Apple shit, mate, you don't have to ask searching questions then.

Been using Galaxy S for nearly 6 months now, good thing about Android is you can stuff around with the firmware / ROMs so easily.

    Now running Android 2.3.3 Draky's ROM v 10.

Almost ready to throw away the laptop.

Android is the future. In the phone world, Apple will just end up being an alternative for non conformists, just like the PC market now.

Have you got a link? I've got an old Galaxy Spica I want to try and resurrect.

^ First you want to flash / format to original Darky 2.2 and go from there. The steps are simple enough, just search the XDA forum for 'darky's ROM', there's a few threads to read through before proceeding.

    This is probably the best thread to be up to date with Darky's work: [ROM] [15.04.2011] Darky's Extreme Edition v9.5 / v10 RC6 ★ XWJS8 / XWJVB (2.3.3) ★ - xda-developers

Alternatively, just go to the Darky website: DarkyROM

Just to clarify, what is a Galaxy Spica? All the stuff I've read through and tried to get my head around relates specifically to the Galaxy S, which the above links are to do with.

If you can't use the firmware there, have you tried sam-firmwares site? (News - www.SamFirmware.com). Apparently you can get all firmwares for all Samsung Android phones there. I used their downloads successfully to flash my phone back to original stock Eclair 2.1 after having some trouble playing around with various ROMs.

Best place for this is a developer / smart phone forum anyway. I wouldn't take heed to much of what the ragtag TD crowd say when it comes to high end technology. XDA forums should have all your Android related answers.

Samdroid and Cyanogen seem to have ROMs but they always seem to be alphas. I don't want to test it, just use it as my spare.

Upgrading to gingerbread for the Galaxy S isn't so easy from a mac.

They have a Kies mini for mac but it doesn't recognize the phone.

The procedure outlined in the above links requires a PC I'm a afraid.

I try to borrow one I guess.

^ search the xda forum or darky site for mac, I'm sure its dpable as it's all done through Oudin and not keis. Just need to have the phone driver installed. Make sure you check tje 'USB debugging' option in your settimgs nefore flashing in download mode via Oudin.

I don't want to go back; I'd rather put a leaner, faster ROM on it. The Spica hasn't exactly got the fastest processor in the world.

^ Do you have to go back first, to be able to go forward, like flashing a PS 3 or Nintendo Wii or PSP ?

My Spica is running a cooked 2.1 (it came with 1.5). I don't mind flashing it back to 1.5 if there is an immediate upgrade, but I can't find a cooked ROM for the Spica that supports all of the hardware. They all seem to be Alphas.

So at some point I'll have to cook, root, flash, and rom my phone.
This adroid shit is pretty kinky!
My question: Will cooking, rooting, flashing, romming the phone void any warranties?
Not that I'm terribly worried since the phone is second hand already.

You can Brick your phone, if you don't know what you're doing

Take it to MBK and get them to do it, will cost peanuts to do

Plus there's a great cheap Shanghai restaurant on the 4th floor near Burger King

    ^^

Bricking is a term that is prominent in the mobile world, and defines any phone that fails to work after any software upgrade.

Most commonly bricking is an associated term with any iPhone that someone has tried to unsuccessfully jailbreak, or an Android phone someone has tried to 'root' and download a bootleg copy of the latest operating system.

When a phone bricks, most manufacturers will not honor any warranty claims, but you can usually restore the phone (keyword: usually) by downloading the correct software for the phone through the manufacturer's website. Phones that are unable to be unbricked may only be good for holding down paper, hence the name 'brick'.

Its pretty bloody hard to brick a SGS, otherwise id have well and truely `bricked' it by now. Not sure about other android phones but with SGS as long as you can boot in download mode you're safe.

You don't have to do it, it's just a way of extending the phone's life.
No it's an alpha, and lots of things don't work.
