    Sony or Apple Lapdog?

After selling my netbook due to aching wrists, i'm looking to purchase a new lapdog and I know feck all about them.

My usage will consist of downloading the odd booty movie, word docs, watching movies as i've scrapped True, browsing 4 or 5 web sites regularly - this is one ofcourse! and some graphic work in CS2 or simialr purely for interest.

The Sony i looked at, i don't remember the model was 32k and was quite wide as it had the numerical keypay to the right. It also had genuine windows.

The Apple i've seen is 34k which looks pretty and a little gay but i'm tempted by the change. There is another at 40k but i'm not sure i can justify the price with my limited knowledge with computers for that.

    Sony or Apple, that's it.

I've had my Sony almost 4 years, brought it here from the USA and it's been flawless. Most other Sony products I've had have also been good. They cost more up front, but they appear quite durable.

Why over priced? I assume the cost is due to genuine windows. But every laptop that i've had with a copy as been a problem.

I've noticed that; the Sonys here are the only brand that seem to all have Windows Legit factory installed.

Go to Amazon, look at laptops, select the $800-1000 category. See if you can find a Sony or a McBook in there (that isn't 2nd hand).

Then look at the spec of the cheapest of either and tell me you can't match it cheaper with a reputable brand, like ASUS, HP, Toshiba or Dell.

As for the OS, I don't know, but that's still only $100 of the price or less, depending on the version.

I wouldn't touch Sony or Apple with a shitty stick.

The macbook's hardware is very good and for that, its worth the premium.
But bang for buck, you'll be better off with the brands mentioned before.

Your first statement is an opinion with which I disagree; your second, one with which I agree wholeheartedly.

Oh and genuine Windows 7 Home Premium?

$140 for three licenses bought retail (so it will probably be less than $40 a pop for an OEM license).

ive been looking for a new laptop, and have found this one from asus.

LAPTOP Magazine - Product reviews, tech news, buying guides, and more

but would like to know about it only having 1.6 Ghz.
is this a major problem as my existing one has 2.1 and i have seen others with greater Ghz, or is the fact that it is an i7 mean something else?

    cheers guys.

Processor speed isn't so much of an issue these days, as the number of cores on the processor increases. The i7 is a Quad Core processor, meaning it's probably going to be a lot faster at 1.6GHz than a Dual core running at 2.1Ghz.

In theory, as long as the OS can handle it, (which Windows 7 can), it can handle four concurrent processor threads, which is what gives it its speed.

There are lots of models of the i Series, the i7 you mention being a low-powered version suitable for laptops.

The big puppy in this series is at the top end of the i7s, which have 6 cores. After than you're getting into Xeons which are primarily aimed at servers.

    Hope this helps.

By the way, this is a great spec for a laptop at that price.

Kinda proves my point regarding Sony and CrappleMac.

Only $1450 at NewEgg and I didn't even look that hard.

N.B. Excaliber say this is discontinued and you should look at the Asus G73Jh-B1. Maybe why it's dropped in price.

I've ruled out Sony and Apple now as they're over priced for what i'd get from them. Still haven't bought one yet but the compaq at 20-25k looks ok. I've always thought of Asus to be a poor brand, or is that acer?

    thanks harry,

i like the big screen with high res, also like that it had 8g of ram, 4 ports, good graphics card.

it was just the 1.6 ghz thing that worried me.

ive looked up the model on asus thailand and they dont seem to have it.
also have looked it up on ozzie websites and its for sale at 2,300 dollars.
so if its not available in thailand, unless i buy it in oz and bring it in personally, how can i get me one?

Dunno mate, I live in the Sandpit, not Thailand.

ASUS are a decent brand (they used to make motherboards for the major manufacturers and then started putting their own computers together).

I'm not a big fan of Acer, but that's more down to the horrendous quality control problems they had and their fixation with writing their own BIOS's which used to be utter crap. I think nowadays they get better reviews, but old habits die hard.

I've had my 13" MacBook Pro for about 18 months now and I wouldn't go back to any other brand. Yes they're more expensive than Acer, ASUS etc but not overpriced.

The "little" things Apple does make a HUGE difference:
    • big multi-touch trackpad
    • backlit keyboard
    • decent res web cam
    • fantastic built in microphone (no need for a headset)
    • can drive a 46" HD TV at full res for watching movies

With 4GB of RAM I can run Windows or Linux in a VM without slowing the system down at all.

I also have a Lenovo running Ubuntu, works great but boy do I miss the things I listed above so it has pretty much been mothballed now.

I think that if, for the same money, you can get a faster processor, 17" screen, double the RAM and a terabyte hard drive, your definition of "overpriced" and mine differ greatly.

horses for courses HB, I've never maxed out 4GB of RAM and I want something that's usable on the go so for me the advantages I listed outweigh having a bigger screen & HDD

helps that I have a few TB of storage on the network and a 32" LCD while I'm sitting at my desk too

I travel with a 2Gb Atom-based Netbook and Win 7; does what I need on the move.

And they're almost a pittance these days.

I use a Sony E-Series 14" laptop. I chose it because the build quality was simply way ahead of everything else I looked at; Asus, Acer, Fujitsu, BenQ, Lenovo etc, etc, etc. I have owned Asus before and been happy but their latest stuff did not look built well. I had to compromise slightly on the spec but as I have a powerful desktop for other stuff that wasn't a concern. It also has HDMI and e-SATA both of which were requirements.
