    Dumping your ISP ...... options

For the last fortnight I've been having problens with our ISP , 3BB .
Apparently the problem started during the their takeover of Maxnet. They forgot to send us a bill for last October despite us phoning to remind them and after a couple of on screen warnings 3 weeks ago , they terminated our connection. This, despite the fact that after the first warning I immediately went to their booth in Central Rattanathibet and paid the outstanding bill. They agree that they have recieved the money and reconnect us , but every midnight the connection does a cinderella and turns into a pumpkin.....ie gets turned off again.
They say that they need to give us a new account and log in code but after 2 weeks of waiting and phoning , have failed to do so.

Soooo, I'm thinking of dumping them and going elsewhere. My question is ...whats the current best alternative to 3BB or is TOT the only viable option. If so, what are they like.

Sorry I won't be able to respond to this thread too promptly as I am having to use the nearest kid-free cafe .... a bit of a ride away. Should be able to look in tomorrow. Your views appreciated
    Bangyai.

    I'm with TOT
Got the 4MB up, 512k down package.
Currently getting over 3MB on a domestic speedtest.
Service has been very good but I expect it depends on where you live

I'm with True. I dumped their cableTV option, but their ISP has always been good.

6mb (speedtest always reads a little higher) wifi, so me and the missus use it all day and all night. If one of us goes out then we connect to True Hotspots which seem to be widespread. 1000 baht/month. Never had a problem.

TTT is still the best in my experience, despite losing it for about 3 hours this afternoon.

    With TOT.

I thought their 1MB connection was great.

Moved up to 3Mb and it wasn't bad. Seemed to be capped during the day though with full speed at night. Occasional drop outs. Torrents always a little capped.

Now i'm on TOT 6mb down 512 up. Absolute crap. I think i've reset my modem 20 times today - it keep locking up. Download speeds are atrocious. Torrents are capped the same as they were with the 3Mb connection - if they ever go that fast. They usually don't.

Wouldn't have had a clue. Have wifi through the condo. Always been bloody brilliant. Was 450b p/m, then suddenly dropped to 300b p/m. Can't complain, the office manager is a computer tech guy.

    Just speed tested and...

so will take a guess that it's True and has a speed of 5.75mb/s.

Always been delighted it with, and never had any issues in over 2 years. And also can't believe the price... 300b well spent.

Just hit the retest button and up to 7mb/s, but noticed the handy bit of info for D/Ling times on the left.

800mg move in 15 mins is about right. Torrents just fly down in the 100s of kbps.

Always hear of people complaining about the internet service here, like this thread, but guess I'm lucky as I've experienced it.

I think with bbb you have to give them a years notice or something just as ridiculous.

Testing against a server in Bangkok will only show your connection speed.
Testing against servers in Los Angeles, Frankfurt, or Melbourne will tell you the quality of your ISP's backbone connection.

    Isn't that what matters?

How many sites do you visit that are hosted in Bangkok? None? So it really doesn't make any difference how fast your connection is to Bangkok, check countries for sites that you use.

Seems to be faster going to America, 8mb/s, and just under 8mb/s going to London.

Admitedly, I've no idea about what all this stuff means, but have always been delighted with my wifi connection.

could be a modem issue, some older models aren't too good for newer ADSL2 connection,

    No idea.

Goes entirely through the condo. The office guy is a computer techie educated overseas, maybe he's stealing it somehow.

Used to be 450b, which I thought was cheap, then after about 18 months it dropped to 300b... I pay up and ask no questions.

The Condo buys a premium package for a few grand them rent it out to the residents at 300b a pop. Fine until everyone starts downloading movies.

    Wouldn't surprise me.

Anyway, thanks for the input everyone. True looks like the best alternative. I'm going to give 3BB until the weekend to resolve the issue but if no joy by then will consider trying to dump them. Actually, our account has already been terminated which is why we have no service. The issue is why they havn't given us a new one ??

It's strange to think I used to be content without the internet. Now I use it for so many things its like losing an arm.

I had a similar sort of situation a couple years ago with loxinfo, chased me for money for years. (Despite it being their fuck up)

Well, problem sorted and now back online.
Thanks again to those who responded and who have given me some new ideas on which ISP to go for in our new house when we move in November.

As a matter of interest, 3BB will let you cancel your agreement providing you have been with them for a year or more.

True have been around the village offering 6 MB for 599 a month and no necessity to have a phone as well which beats the 850 I'm paying 3BB with a house phone we hardly ever use.

All in all its been an eye opener not having an internet connection for the last 4 days. At first it was a real pain and I was very grouchy ( according to Ms Bangyai ) , wandering from room to room looking for something to do. However, by day three I was spending more time doing other stuff and had passed the cold turkey stage. Which leads me to think I spend to much time online and should try to limit myself to no more than 2 hours a day.

So its goodbye xhamster and a lot of convenient newspaper links and hello ' other stuff '.......well, at least until it rains again
