    Free virus removal tool

We're in the throes of getting rid of crappy old McAfee, so I wanted to give all of the servers and what not a once over before we install Forefront.

I ran this on the servers and it identified quite a few dormant bits and pieces that McAfee never noticed.

And it's free. Boot into safe mode, install, run, disinfect (or clean) and when you quit it uninstalls.

    And it's FREE.

    Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool 2010

I'd be interested to hear if it finds anything your normal AV didn't pick up.

Does it work with other anti-virus progs installed? I'll take a look. I don't trust any of these progs, even the one I use.

The rule of thumb is, only one AV program can be active at any one time. Otherwise they'll get into each other's way.

That is why Kaspersky is installed and run in "Safe Mode" and uninstalls itself before "Normal Mode" so as not to cause conflict with any existing AV program(s) installed.

I've got free Avira which is very popular in Europe. It doesn't bog down the computer like mcafee or norton.

    Thanks, Norts
I downloaded it from here Index of /devbuilds/

Ran a full scan in safe mode and it found nothing.
My current anti virus is Avast (free version) which I find very good

Same here, I'm using Avast free, nothing found. I find Avast very good because it takes not much in resources (compared to the earlier AV programs).

Avast is non intrusive and quietly works away with no fuss.
    Also it does scans quickly

    I use Avira.

    seems OK.

Thing is, I'm so computer illiterate I'm no position to judge.

The fact that you have AV installed makes you a lot more computer literate than many people, trust me....

I had to dump Avira because our son was bringing viruses home from school that went straight past Avira.

Good tip. New boy doesn't touch my comp from now on.

    Thetyim said so.

    Conversation ensues.........

"Yes, I know he's being totally unreasonable but he has banned you from using my computer, OK."

"No, I don't know where Thetyim lives. No, you can't telephone him."

"Yes, next time we see him you can shout at him."

"No. I don't know when we'll see him."

"No, I don't know what he looks like."

"No, I don't know where he lives."

"Look, all I know is Thetyim is a very big man who eats small boys for breakfast."

"You really want to see him?"

    "Go to bed"

Not impressed with Avast's registration process.

The "Register Now" process doesn't work.

I've filled out the registration form on two PCs with two different identities, and neither got a license key emailed to them in 24 hours.

And the "resend" says neither email address exists.

Pile of poo if you ask me.

    What a let down.
