AMD looks to tablets
AMD, the US-based processor maker, is expanding into the media tablet and netbook market.
The company is also preparing to launch an entry-price notebook product for the first time, starting from US$200.
Bob Grim, director for client product marketing of AMD, said the company would introduce a new-generation processor, called AMD Fusion Family. The product combines processing capability with graphics in the same chip, called Accelerated Processing Units (APU). It is designed for media tablets, netbooks, notebooks and desktop computers.
The processor will also offer a sleeker design, longer battery life for up to 10 hours and higher definition for desktop and mobile devices all at a lower price than its rivals, he said.
Previously, AMD made processors mainly for notebooks, priced at about $300, and desktop computers. "We are now moving into the tablet and netbook market for the first time, with prices raging from $220-500 a unit."About 35 brands use its processors, including Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba.
Chukkrit Watcharasaksilp, country manager of AMD Thailand, said Thailand's internet penetration was around 26%, though PC penetration is only 14%.
