Don't put the Nexus in your pocket :)

We mentioned some time ago the editor of this site CNET UK that saw the screen of his newly acquired Nexus One somewhat messed up for no apparent reason ...

Well, now we know why: the Nexus One is not to be stored in your pockets. And even less in the pockets of your jeans, so says the service after sale of HTC. Yes, they have dared to say: "People sometimes forget that this type of device is not meant to be put in a pocket."

Next step: HTC will advise you to keep your phone constantly in hand. It's so much more convenient, and it avoids the shock ...

I think it's a reference to a problem with the Nexus vis a vis the consistency of the Apple iPhone touch screen. Must admit, prior to my getting iPhones, I had problems with the screens of 2 Nokia N95's that I had, similar to the photos of the Nexus. Never had an issue with the iPhone displays, and in pockets all the time. Only thing that seems to faze the iPhone is if I use it and my face is wet with sweat, and I have to wipe it dry before touching 'disconnect'.

I'm still not following...are we saying fragility of large screen here? Humidity? Accidental pressing of onscreen keys? Moisture contamination?

Not having a mobile phone myself I cannot elaborate more. But I've found this news on a website and it does show some cracks (stains) on the screen of the phone.

Just thought it was worth sharing.

Filch appears to be trolling, based on his later responses.

As pointed out (and I can corroborate) I carry my iPhone in my pocket all the time, and I have had no issues with it at all. So do many others (disclaimer: I do not carry keys in my 'phone pocket'). A mobile phone is meant to be carried in a user's pocket - that should be part of the design concern, and obviously, it can be achieved (see, iPhone).

The point is both to be made about the lack of sturdy construction of the Nexus, but also HTC's attitude regarding their own design flaws, in general blaming the end user, than their own design (HTC is a Taiwanese company, FWIW).

HTC pulled a similar stunt with one of their earlier designed smartphones, where they boasted an ATI accelerated video chip - until it was found out that their software never even activated or used the features of the accelerated GPU. When this was pointed out to them, they initially ignored it, then claimed it was untrue, then admitted they were working on a solution - and their solution then was the next model phone they released. When they were asked about the present phone, and if a firmware fix was going to be available, HTC explained that if people want that feature, they should buy the new phone.

An enterprising hacker took the new firmware and made it work on the old phone, and released a single firmware flash for users of the old phone - thus proving that it was just a software issue, and that HTC could not care less about their customers.

Compare that to Apple and the iPhone -- whereas I can install the latest version of the software, with all additional fixes, functional software features, etc... on my very first generation iPhone... Thereby preserving my original investment and giving me all the new fixes, features and functions that this nearly 3 years old hardware platform can support.

Compare that to the fragmentation of Android phones, each one abandoned and stuck at the software version it shipped with. "Want new features, buy a new HTC phone"

Humidity or greasy fingers are issues that disrupt the capacitive touch screen (as it's based on galvanic resistance in your skin), and a quick wipe fixes that.

Apple compensated for that by coating the screen of the latest version with an oleophobic coating - rejects oil, and makes it easier to wipe clean.

There are 2 kinds of screens, the glass ones that break at first fall and the tough plastic ones that can fall without breaking, made that experiences and will never buy a glass screen one anymore...

Where is the link I provided in the OP ?

Seems the mods have deleted it. It was in french but I don't see why it should have been deleted as it was easy to translate in your browser. The mod in the computer section is a real nutter.

I bought a touchscreen phone from a Thai company (or so they say - prolly Chinky shit) and it goes in the pocket fine.

Shame the rest of the phone is crap. I swapped it for my old one again.

Hate mobile phones anyway. I have a battered old Nokia (not sure of model as the sign as worn off)) which i have dropped numerous times that works just the same. If i had one of these modern phones i know it wouldn't last 5 minutes.

May I be the first to say "Whoop de fucking doo".

Please don't turn this into another iTard thread, there is a perfectly acceptable one already.

I think either the HTC is too fragile or it took a bit of a pasting. Give me your twee little iPhone and I can almost guarantee I can recreate the effect.
