    Some sensible internet banking advice

I, like lots of people, do most of my banking on the net. Its convenient and save me from dealing with bank staff who will soon be all but obselete.

Drawback. ID theft and banking fraud online has now surpassed stuff like skimming ATMs and other nasty practices to steal your hard earned cash.

This seems like a sensible solution to me

Windows not fit for online banking, says Washington Post blog

Security Fix - Avoid Windows Malware: Bank on a Live CD

This isnt some anti Windows rant, its just that Windows is the most targeted system so us Mac and Linux users shouldnt take the piss too much.

Dont get too paranoid yet but over the next few years things are going to have to be tightened up.

Didnt think of that. I doubt its as bad as some people might think but its only going to get worse. Far easier to swipe someones details from the net than go rummaging through rubbish tips for discarded credit card statements.

    I use Bangkok Bank .
If someone steals my ID then they cannot set up a 3rd party account to transfer money to unless they can intercept my phone as well.

it's a system that boots directly into FireFox, it does nothing else

it's using the Share Host Network address option of VMWARE, so nothing to configure

HSBC gives you a security device that spits out an 8 digit pin number every time you login or try to transfer money in addition to all the other login details....

Don't see how that would help as the VMWare kernel is Linux with OS instances laid on top of it... We use VMWare with the Internet Appliance addon and it can still get hacked... Worse yet if someone is sniffing the traffic...

There is an even safer way.
It's called telephone banking, remember that? Yes, well they still have it and it still works and,
unless you've got a wiretap on your line, it's pretty much risk free.

^ Do you download this ? Download Ubuntu | Ubuntu

    Instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Or maybe have a try with Mandriva: Download | Mandriva

Download, burn and boot on the Live CD.

this is the image file for the Ubuntu Internet Appliance that runs from a USB thumbdrive (1GB)

    see their instructions,

from the LiveCD, it's another distribution, it should be ISO not IMG

OK my mistake with the laptop setup. Thought I'd saved boot from CD/DVD but hadn't.

Ubuntu runs but doesn't like the wireless connection. Nice light brown screen. When I can be arsed I'll carry the brick downstairs and plug it straight into the router.
